http://kotaku.com/5853416/report-nintendo-bleeding-cash NINTENDO BLEEDING CASH!.....still making a profit....

http://kotaku.com/5853430/nintendo-defeated-japan-crowns-a-new-game-king NAMCO BANDAI BEATING NINTENDO!......Nintendo sold more overall units then them. Also interesting to point out, when the article first went up it didn't have 'Nintendo defeated' in the title.

I dunno where Kotaku gets its numbers, but Ninty is expected to post a $1 billion + loss for the past two quarters on Thursday. That ain't profits. Sure, Ninty *says* they're gonna make a paltry $35 mil for the entire year or something. But the desperate often make ludicrous claims about future success.

I liked what it was supposed to symbolize, but it's just all screwed up now. It has no meaning. If someone has a Star, it doesn't really mean anything, well, it could mean they made an editor laugh, or a nice Photoshop. Who knows...

Some have mentioned a like/dislike addition, but that is just something that trolls would love to take advantage of. And the confusion people have when trying to separate fact from opinion, will only make a bad idea worse.

I think one way it could work, is if they have just add "Like" button, like Facebook. It might not be the most popular suggestion, but just give me a minute... With Like, it seems that people are less inclined to use it as a tool for trolling. That's not to say it won't be, but if you look through forums that use the Like/Dislike, you often see more marks on dislike. It's rarer for people to actually go out of their way and 'Like' a comment.

There should also be a direct 'Report' button for silencing trolls or assholes as soon as possible. It can then be tracked, assessed and removed if deemed unsuitable.

They'll never be a perfect solution. We will always argue that people shouldn't be silenced, and who is anyone to judge anothers thoughts or right to speak? But sometimes it just needs to be grounded, not everything is about freedom of speech. If someone is being a dick when you and your brethren are talking games, then there should be an option to shut them up.

I've never liked "rating" systems for comments. Discourages people from giving a dissenting opinion because a bunch of simple-minded halfwits go "UG NO LIKE. UG THUMB DOWN" on the "unpopular" opinion.

Useful for erasing blatant trolls, aggravating for everything else. Lets fanboys, etc., come out of the woodwork to "disagree" without actually saying anything. I've been of the idea that if people have something to say, they should make a post and say it, not just press a "UG LIKE" or "UG NO LIKE" without any back up and just move on.

Goes to show, 95% of gaming journalism comprises of people spouting off regurgitated PR lines.

Of course, we also have gaming journalism where, instead of praising the game, they attack it for nonsensical reasons, which results in people praising them because they have absolutely no idea what good journalism is.

Being negative about a game for no good reason ("It wasn't the game I thought it was going to be!") is just as stupid as being positive about it just 'cause the PR guys told you to.

It was interesting to learn recently that even game interviews have PR people present.

Certainly seems that way when said journalists come out to defend developers giving out buggy code that's not representative of the final game. If you're handing out shit not representative of the final product, why even do a preview in the first place?

Sounds like Battlefield 3's beta.

Obviously to keep the hype and marketing machine going, and obviously NOT to actually report and keep people informed.

I want to blame the PR guys for this. Unlike the film industry, the gaming industry seems to think that reviews and previews are a privilege or a gift, as opposed to a vital part of their existence. They desperately attempt to control everything people hear about the game in order to generate massive sales. It's quite disappointing. :\

If I ever end up running a game company, I want to be independent enough to be able to release a demo of the game to the public at the same time the press gets their hands on it, so I can get some unfiltered reviews of what people think, rather than ones influenced by having half a dozen PR guys standing around.

Heh. I like it. Though you might want to consider using the pagebreak thing in your articles so it doesn't display the entirety of them on the main page. Holy scrolly!

I've always been bitter about never receiving a star, I've never really been a troll, and I've had the writers agree with me, but I guess I've never said anything amazing either. It wasn't an issue until I saw people who were just trolling and they had a star. That always irked me.

Now-a-days I've just given up on getting a star and still comment on there but less and less. The community has changed, and those that were people I enjoyed have moved on (most of them to this place :) ) so I just have made less of a presence there and moved on.

I recently removed Kotaku from my bookmarks bar because I never used that anymore (thank you google reader), and have a plethora of other sites to read.

My biggest issue with Kotaku is that even though I dislike a lot of what they have written, what Nick Denton has done to the entire Gawker Media in general, they still release the most information of any other site. If I want something to read I end up on Kotaku no matter what, just because the shear amount of articles they have.

It may surprise you but I never earned my star for thoughtful comments. It was always for stupid jokes. I can't really say that stars actually mean anything on Kotaku anyway and I barely recognise any commenters anymore.

I actually started reading Kotaku just because of the 'silly' articles. For example, I think I discovered Arby 'n' the Chief through them many years ago. I wouldn't ever use them for game news and it's obvious they're not very good at it.

I stayed because of the community, people like Showmeyomoves! always made me laugh but, lo and behold, now all those people are here. So it all worked out in the end.

I think they should do a purge of the Star's anyway. They have changed the Starring format so many times now, that having one doesn't really represent anything.

You mean it isn't a way to have users moderate your site for free anymore while making them feel superior? :P

Seriously, the whole thing always seemed like the internet equivalent of being a hall monitor.

It's somewhat odd to re-publish NeoGAF posts when the impression I get is that if Kotaku was to go down in flames one day NeoGAF would petition to have it made a national holiday.

edit: eeep, someone did some TOS digging:

You remain solely responsible for the content of your messages, and you agree to indemnify and hold GAF harmless with respect to any claim based upon transmission of your message(s).

edit2: And apparently the TOS has now been tweaked in reverse. that's never going to be pretty.

C. By registering an account at NeoGAF.com and participating (including but not limited to submitting replies or private messages), you hereby grant NeoGAF LLC and our licensees, distributors, agents, representatives and other authorized users, a perpetual, non-exclusive, irrevocable, fully-paid, royalty-free, sub-licensable and transferable (in whole or part) worldwide license under all copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, privacy and publicity rights and other intellectual property rights you own or control to use, reproduce, transmit, display, exhibit, distribute, index, comment on, modify, create derivative works based upon, perform and otherwise exploit such submissions, in whole or in part, in all media formats and channels now known or hereafter devised, for any and all purposes including entertainment, news, advertising, promotional, marketing, publicity, trade or commercial purposes, all without further notice to you, with or without attribution, and without the requirement of any permission from or payment to you or to any other person or entity.

Or, as a few NeoGAF folks pointed out, it's just formalising what they already do :P

They run the daily speakup posts, they republish other sites, they've now started doing few paragraph long Yes/no reviews, they've been running those tweet length articles for ages. And now republishing forum posts. Anything that maximizes the amount of content, (and page hits and therefore ad revenue) while minimising the overall workload is always awesome.
