Did you reply back to him? I know those "accusations" are batshit crazy, but all you really have to do is make Crecente look like a jackass. Something along the lines of "It's quite possible that Crecente mistook my account for someone else's, because I never made any statement like that at all. It's completely understandable getting people mixed up, though, considering just how many people move in and out of Kotaku's commenting pool"

You know, fight batshit insanity with calm rationality. Looks like Joel hasn't been around Crecente enough yet to get as retarded as he is, so you can probably talk some sense into him.

Again, not that it matters. TAY and Kotakuites is dead for all intents and purposes so talking to Joel isn't really going to accomplish much other than "ok, he really WASN'T going to kill children".

You know. I've managed to stay out of this thread for about 100% of it's pages and posts.

Though, with someone here who is OBVIOUSLY reading this thread, why not just leave the message simply saying: "No one's children were threatened. It may have been a rumor he heard or someone being stupid and typing stupid shit (Clown) who is no longer on this board. Though to stoop to murder, much less against a child, is not something we'd joke about when all that's truly at stake here is the flow of information of VIDEO GAMES. I know that some people here take that stuff seriously, maybe to a degree in which it might be unhealthy, but no one here would ever state something like that. I mean yeah, some of us are REALLY over-aggressive and stuff, but none of us would say something like that. And if they did, it's instant auto-ban and it's obviously someone we don't want associated with us."

That's REALLY all that needs to be done. Why send an email back when we all know this thread is being thoroughly read? Seriously.

I mean fucking seriously, guys. Someone, whether the story was made up or not, said that someone here threatened to murder a child. Sitting here calling that person batshit to each other and simply re-affirming your hate doesn't really help out the situation. You all need to seriously just calm the hell down.

And may the judge's record state this: I still read Kotaku, I don't comment as much, but I do read it. So lot me in with Tiller and Mike, I'm not ashamed of it. I'm happy with what I CHOOSE to read. Doesn't mean I read just that site. Then again, I never read just ONE site. I only actively commented on ONE site.

Super cool Story, brosef. SRSLY.

But really, all that is needs is a straightforward "No", and either move on to passing stewardship of Kotakuites, or move along/forward with everythign already in motion.

homestar_seriously.jpg

No doesn't always help, brodad. SRSLY.

I think there is a chance that some of the people here would feel genuine disgust about being accused of (or having the stupid words of another) some vile words like that. Now an even smaller percentage will have a calm head and a cool hand while they actually write out what is to be written. As you can see, most people here threw out a batshit argument, when few suggested a calm manner.

Not saying you can't just say "NO" outright, you can always do that. Though, maybe this might help out to actually explain that none of us here said it, nor are any of us here affiliated with the one who said it, if they did.

Chew, sorry but you're talking shit. No one needs to calm down because everyone is already calm. No one's just saying 'Fucking Crecente, what a dick. I hate his guts', and the incredulous response shows how silly the whole thing is.

Pretty much everyone has suggested a polite and rational response already. Even RockyRan, who was saying the more aggressive things.

If anyone needs to calm down and is taking things too seriously, it's you.

Actually, I distinctly remember Crecente mistaking AchromaticMagus (Whitemage) for you, Dean. Do you remember that?

This is made more funny and illogical considering both were commenters at the same time, more often than not in the same threads, and that Dean's avatar at the time was a Black Mage.

Crecente plays videogames for a living. If he seriously mixed up a White Mage and a Black Mage, there's something genuinely wrong here.

Were I Dean, I would write back stating categorically that I did not make any threats against Crecente, a quick search through Dean's post history would show that he is consistently polite and level headed in his response and has never threatened violence against anyone. I'm just a cards on the table sort of person, I'd rather everything be in the open and on the record, rather than assume someone is reading this as a lurker.

It's quite possible that someone created a deanbmmvv account or what have you and made these threats unbeknownst to anyone here. In the heat of the moment I can also understand Crecente misreading an alias and given the anonymous nature of Kotaku commenting it's quite possible that someone other than dean could have impersonated him and made these comments.

If I had been in Crecente's shoes I would have banned the hell out of anyone who threatened my family too, even in jest. That said, I'd also have been man enough to tell them what I was doing and why and so would have discovered the mix up.

Personally, I don't read Kotaku anymore. I mostly went there for the community, which is why I am here now. I mostly left because I didn't like the direction the Crecente was taking the blog (or the way he was doing it). I'd return to reading Kotaku and commenting there if someone as community focussed as this Joel fellow appears to be was actually in charge of the place, but, as it stands, I'll get my game news elsewhere.

Upvoted, not because I agree with you, but for the Chewie "lean back" factor. I always enjoy your rants and then picturing you at your computer, arms crossed and leanin' back, thinking to yourself, "What now, TAY? What now?"

Oh I thought I'd already put my reply in.

> There's probably a validation email caught in your spam filter.

>

> As for what crecente said I'm actually in shock from that suggestion. I have

> never, nor would I ever, make any statement like that, joke or not. Most

> I've ever said on coming to the states is for a PAX meet-up.

So yeah got a reply back.

It's disappointing that you thought it appropriate to share my emailwith the rest of the world while we were in mid-stream. Not angry, but

I have no desire to further continue the conversation.

Take care,

Joel

I'm surprised he thought he could accuse me of issuing death threats to crecentes kid and expect me to completely keep that to myself. That kind of insanity can't really be contained. And given the nature of the chat was supposed to be in regards to a group of a few thousand people, something I made a point of in my first email, it's not like the discussion would be kept private. Though I guess as we all know from the redesign and their continuing references to "site direction" they don't like to tell everyone what's going on.

Meh if that was his reply after me specifically stating "lets just talk on the Steam group" then I think it's pretty apparent the discussions purpose wasn't the steam group but just to throw various rumours against me. So I guess we both come out pretty disappointed. Me because his first reply to the discussion wasn't the steam group but "crecente sez..", and him cos I felt it was so insane, so absurd a thing to suggest that I couldn't keep it to myself.

So I guess ends that. Remind me not to get my hopes up that a kotaku writer might actually care more for their community than a person they vilified, ignored, banned, accused of issuing death threats and doesn't read the site any more.

edit: When I wrote this Thrusdays was the last reply. So @Goh: I guess you can see the answer now.

Oh and there was another guy. I think called Spaz or something. People confused him with me cos he also had a vivi avatar, but his was squashed. I think he built up a fair few followers from that mix-up :P

I suppose I can understand his frustration with having his email put up here, but at the same time, I always try to write emails with the knowledge that they can be forwarded, screen-capped, printed out, saved, and posted anywhere in the world. I mean, did he think the accusation would be a secret forever? Dean was just supposed to take his lumps? Especially as an editor of a major gaming blog, I mean, it was gonna come out. And if it was important to keep secret for the time being, then put, "Hey Dean, please don't pass this on for now, but we gotta resolve this one lingering issue..."

Oh yeah while I remember:

I do remember on the old place once saying that I was for all intents and purposes practically unbannable because it just wouldn't go down well.

I guess I was taken up on that bet...

Thing is if I had actually threatened tristan, then surely it would have made sense to go *screencap* "this is why dean was banned" instead of saying I was trolling. Because that would have really bolstered up his reasoning instead of this feeble "You know that dean guy who tips in articles, builds up the community, offers helpful advice. yeah well he was trolling so I banned him". But you can't screencap that which does not exist.

Also Chew could probably clear up a bit in regards to what happened cos after I was banned Chew passed on to me something relating to why I was banned. And now for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

edit: Yeah I'm used to people passing on things that are meant to be kept completely private either with a preface of "nothing leaves this email" or something similar. Or, and given it's his work email I'm surprised their legal team...oh wait, has

written at the bottom.

There's several folks on here who know that you put in something to indicate it's to be kept to yourself. And it is. Of course none have accused me of issuing death threats. It's not like I just go around and baring all messages to me to the world. But start accusing me of shit and yeah I'm not gonna keep quiet and roll over on that.

P4 seems to match my thoughts in regards to putting stuff up on the web. If you want something to be truly kept to yourself: then keep it to yourself.

I did kind of expect something like that back. The results of some internal memo sent around of "I'm emailing this dean guy, what does everyone know". However for that to be the response was totally unexpected.

Perhaps they just wrote various amounts of generally incriminating scenarios, threw them into a hat, and drew from it.

I do love a game of Clue.

No that I copy pasted from one of my step-mums emails. She's never really bothered to get a proper personal email.

What I have been sent is what I've put up here. No disclaimers, no nothing. Not even a signature or something.

Given their legal counsel is their secretary or something I don't think adding confidentially disclaimers to emails is high up the list given that no one even bothered to tell them it was illegal to purchase stolen goods.
