I'm definitely disappointed in the RPS editors rushing in and white knighting Kotaku's writers with such ardor. Not because of the fact that they're "NOT" agreeing with us, because of the fact that they of all people should know just how shitty that article was. Yeah sure, so Jim knows Joel personally and all that jazz. It's cute but it doesn't take away from the fact that Joel wrote an article that was nothing more than utter bollocks while at the same time taking the usual cheap shots at PC gaming. The fact that the RPS editors are largely overlooking that is really quite disheartening.

What both those parties need to realize is the fact that there was something in the article that set off people. Indeed, while obviously there's "LULZ U GUYZ R PAID SHILLZ" troll posts are sprinkled throughout gaming web sites high and low, this situation is obviously different. Here, several dozen people are suspecting the same thing in unison, and rather than be pettily "offended" at such accusations, what really needs to be examined is why readers reacted that way. But no, rather than admitting the fact that it was the article (for whatever reason, even if it didn't mean they were "paid" for it) that set off that derision from readers, they instead blame it squarely on the shoulders of the readers, making them out like ungrateful nutcases.

I'm sorry but I don't buy it. Bad enough that Kotaku had to wipe its ass with its own reputation even more in the first place, now the RPS writers think it's appropriate to rub their nose in it too. My respect for RPS was chipped off at the top here with all this white knighting going on.

At least Jim conceded that Joel's article came from a point of fanboyism. It may not be the admission of bullshit we're expecting but it's probably the closest we'll ever see Jim revealing his real thoughts on Joel's article. I think what annoyed me more than the article was Joel's response to his detractors. On top of what he said on his twitter, he never once approached anyone with any semblance of a counter argument.

I'm reluctant to even ask what Joel said on his twitter. I can only imagine it being worse than the appalling responses he gave on the site itself.

This is just affirming my initial suspicions about Joel that he's an incompetent journalist with an extremely thin skin, has absolutely no clue how to handle criticism, and seems to enjoy overreacting (his e-mail exchanges with Dean being a great example of that). I said it in the RPS argument but it bears repeating that sometimes it's not about what is being said about a person, it's how a person reacts to that allegation. Even if the article really wasn't an advertisement at all (and I honestly don't really think it was), Joel's completely unprofessional writing and even worse reaction to its criticisms do far worse at damaging his reputation than a bunch of random readers thinking he got a free lunch out of it.

Started reading the Joel comments. Its pathetic. Its almost better to not have a star than to have a star. 90% of the starred comments are insulting people who disagree with people using my favorite phrase "You seem to lack basic reading/comprehension skills." Its absolutely terrible how bad the community has gotten, and how childish the writers have reacted to commenters. Its not just Kotaku, its almost all of gawker.

Luckily my experience with Jalopnik has been very good, with happy commenters and happy writers. Its almost entirely in its own bubble and a pleasant change.

Why when there is such a huge pool of people does gawker hire from the shallow end?

Also what the fuck does this have to do with Gadgets. Why the hell did Gawker make several blogs with dedicated areas to cover and then just have the writers do whatever the fuck comes to mind?

Ugh. Let's just keep the discussion on Kotaku. I can barely handle the idiocy of one blog's writers at a time.

As I've just sent to GameJournos who jsut RT'ed the image:

Kotaku seem to be totally in the clear on that one. It looks like the guy who put it on Reddit also sent it as a tip to Kotaku. (redditor = adamsfx, source = "thanks Adam")

I think it only got the front page cos the folks of r/gaming are of a similar mind of us on being quite happy to drag kotaku across the coals once in a while.

I've been very pissed at Kotaku as of late, the writers can't take any form of criticism, be it constructive or not. Reading this thread has been nothing but satisfying to see other people feeling the same way about Kotaku/Gawker. I can't stand how much they are just getting rid of anybody who has a different opinion.

It's always pissed me off as to why I never had a star. I used to comment and make suggestion and did what I could to get a star, but never got my star. It seems these days, I could care less.

Although, I do hope that the Kotaku editors are aware of this thread/forum to see how they have affected their community in a negative way. I was shown the light over to this forum right after the terrible site change, and I love it here.

Wow... That just seals the opinion in me that Joel Johnson is a self-important tech-blog hipster who simply can't see any fault in himself because he has an ego the size of Texas. I was kind of getting that from the way he didn't address any criticism of his Razer article, but just insulted the readers directly when they tried to discuss it - I really think that now that he's on top of Kotaku, he believes he can't be wrong.

I'm glad to have an alternative to that site now because with him at the helm, it was damaging my (modest) reputation being active there... Not that I expect I'm well known off the site (or reputable... muheheh...)

But anyway, I want to keep my hatin' short here - I already feel that by discussing him this much I've given him too much validation/mindshare. It'd only satisfy him to see us get bent out of shape over it. Mostly though I'm not mad at him because he is what he is, but because of what happened to such a great website - and to be fair, it was kind of skewing that way already back when he was still trolling for Gizmodo. :bun-whateva:

I don't dislike many people, so I have a hard time saying bad things about anybody (and I like Joel, my opinion being in a very small minority, it seems).

But, this guy just seems like a jerk at Giz.

Jesus Diaz is an editor. This is straight trolling. I'm embarrassed for the guy who he trolled. It was rude, crude, and socially unacceptable.
