I never liked Joel, at all. You can always sense this feeling of condescendence and arrogance in his writing, it never worked for me. It just seems that he'd be one of those assholes on a message board who thinks he can outwit the rival of discourse. Looks like banning powers are the ultimate form of online "I'm better than you, and I'm ending it here". A cop out move if you ask me...or anyone.

Sorry for the double post but I had to post this: http://kotaku.com/58...354642#comments

Ohhhh, Joel. You're really not doing yourself any favours.

Haha... I see that last speech I gave got him to ban me. Ah well - the destarring was out of line, but I was fishing for a ban there. :)

Hey Dex, how old is your star? I noticed that I'm still starred on all the other Gawker sites - I got mine on Kotaku early on, before it was sectioned into individual sites.

You know, reading through that thread, I noticed that both Dex's and Fuchikoma's bans from Joel said "see Community Guidelines", so I clicked on it.

These are our sites, and we reserve the right to moderate the discussion. The basic rules are standard: An attack on authors or other commenters is unlikely to make you popular. Think before you disparage social or ethnic groups. Don't spam. Don't post pornography or copyrighted imagery. Stay on topic.

That said, the community policy of Gawker Media is forgiving. If your criticism is articulate, it will likely get through. We dole it out; we can take it. What do we mean by articulate? Support your point with argument, facts and citations. Good grammar and spelling also help.

Such a fucking load of crap! And what a joke, too, considering that Joel is the only one in that thread that resorted to petty name-calling and insults.

That guy is so fucking pathetic

I don't ever have a reason to insult the editors. I've stated my disappointment, and even got a response from Joel explaining his side and telling me there wasn't much he could do about it, but I can't go out there and stick my foot up their cyber asses since so many depend on my shitty Jesus humor.

LIKE 3 PEOPLE! HOW COULD I EVER LET THEM DOWN?

I really dislike that he starts by promoting your comment and even replies to it - actually inviting you to respond further, when diplomatically if he had really felt the need to un-star you he could've done it and walked away. Instead he invited you to a conversation and banned you because he didn't like what you had to say. Seems rather childish to me. Reminds me exactly why I've stopped giving Kotaku page views though.

That's the thing. I know people have had their problems with Crecente or Plunkett or whoever, hell I've had my own arguments with them but Joel just can't seem to accept any criticism whatsoever. I have respect for Jim Rosingol over on RPS but even he had trouble making his point about bribes and so on with how Joel wrote his article. I feel Joel was moved to Kotaku because he had made too bad a name for himself over at Gizmodo but if that is the reason, he certainly hasn't learned his lesson. A lot of the criticism could have been avoided if he had responded to the criticisms against him responsibly but he couldn't even manage that. That's what pisses me off the most. He couldn't be bothered.

So I saw KearneyBobs post a tweet. At first I thought nothing of it. Until DukeofPwn posted the exact same tweet a couple hours later.

https://twitter.com/search/%23spacemarinePS3

I like how it's "I might read kotaku" :P Though bravo on crafting a fairly conspicuous looking competition tweet. Most competition tweets tend to be "follow @kotaku and retweet for a chance to win item X" sort of things. Though as you can see not everyone is posting the required tweet. Quite a few "I'll never read shitty @kotaku even if I win Space Marine PS3"

I've never really understood why they have their competitions accessible only to people not reading Kotaku. Like it's either from subscribing to an email easily filtered to junk, tweeting something on liking them on Facebook.

So this on reddit I'll post my reply:

Kotaku is a place easily ignored on the PC front (unless they've reposted an RPS article, but you may as well read them first hand at RPS).

Well done for falling right into their trap though. You see what they do is trot out their skewed opinion, dress it up as fact and then you get outraged, link it on reddit for everyone to rage and and they go laughing to the bank.

His use of the word "we" and "us" is a bit odd since he's so happy to frequently shit all over PC gamers. PC gamers: Small enough a democratic that Kotaku can afford to lose them, big enough that pissing them off can net your articles tons of hits.

It's funny cos he's still going on about this "standardzing PC gaming" thing while completely ignoring the giant elephant in the room that is DirectX. It's standardized so much that 360 dev builds can be accidentally released on Steam.

Refers to PC gamers in the first person plural.

Hardly touches the thousand games on his Steam account.

EDIT: And Holy Half-Life 3, Batman; way to take a Gabe Newell quote out of context. He was talking about the need for technology companies to always be aware of changes going on around them to adapt, and gave a few examples in how tech is changing. He wasn't supporting Joel's idea of a console/PC freak Frankenstein machine at all. And his entire point was that he'd like Steam to lead the way in those arenas.

Maybe he pirates all his games because he doesn't support DRM?

On a serious note, I'll just paraphrase a Serbian Nobel prize winner: "Humans are the worst at predicting events."

I will always give anyone predicting the "future" of anything raised eyebrows. We've had people who were even more qualified in their field than Valve or id go way off with their predictions.

Someone could invent something we never could have comprehended before hand that sends the industry in a completely different direction.

Perhaps someone should get Gabe on this BS... not sure if its worth his time since it is Kotaku.

Just scrolling through and From Dust is actually his 4th/5th most played Steam game at 2.4hrs. (Others are L4D2, Portal 2 n Fallout 3)

About the only Kotaku writer I'd listen to regarding PC is Fahey, who does actually play on PC: http://steamcommunit.../id/Fahey/games

That's a lot of Deus Ex.

Oh and full quote

"They look at Steam as it is today and say, ‘Aha, we can do something like that too.'," he said. "What they are missing is that this is just the beginning. The rate at which stuff is changing is dramatic. Things we've done in Steam are going to seem very primitive simply a few years down the road."

Steam, he said, can't stand still for even half a year and in a way, that terrified Newell.

"We're terrified by the future," he said. "You need to be looking at what's happening with Apple, Google Android and thinking that could impact the living room in a big way. You need to be looking at Onlive and how it is integrated with the television.

"Where we are today is trivial to where we will be down the line. We need to be focusing on where we are headed."

I started a document over on GDocs. I'm not seeing Joel jump to destarring anyone yet anyway but then again, there's no reason for people to accuse him of being paid for this article. Right now, I'm imagining all these critical points slamming Joel physically in the face while he just scratches his head none the wiser.

You know, I haven't commented a single time since I announced my departure the day the redesign went live, but I just need to let off some steam at this dumbass who keeps writing garbage articles. Nothing big, not a rant or anything. Just a small "you're a dumbass" will do for me.
