Bouchart
I doubt that's all of the users because some random posts on Speakup claim that 1.3 million user IDs have been compromised.
superfrogsavestokyo
People using "qwerty" and "password" for their password wouldn't surprise me at all. It's somewhat plausible if they don't think they'll participate that much on the site or don't care if they're password is compromised (like not using those for e-mail or banking). I had to yell at a friend for using a terribly simple password for her facebook and e-mail account and who knows what else.
deanb
Yeah to clarify that list is of only people with Password and QWERTY as their Password. If you use something different you're in the other dump of files.
Chronixal
Well I've been and changed all my major passwords. just to be sure. Not fucking happy about all this though. What a shambles.
ixa
I changed my Kotaku password but I use a different password for everything anyway so meh. that's sure a lot of peasants using "password" as their password though. but...if they don't think they'll participate that much on the site or don't care if they're password is compromised I guess it's not a big deal as long as "password" isn't their goto...password. Shadowstep
I can't help but think we're nothing more than statistics to the Gawker team. I wonder why...
Cyber Rat
Everybody STAY CALM! Kotaku alone has OVER 2 MILLION UNIQUE VISITORS PER MONTH. They obviously know what they're doing! Also, lol karma/divine retribution/justice/Kira. EDIT: Dammit, Shadow! Now it'll look like your post inspired my witty comment! You stole my cool points! Mister Jack
Well this was a huge pain in the ass. I changed the password for kotaku and every other site I can think of that used it. Fortunately I'm smart enough not to use that password for anything important like my bank account or credit card.
Shadowstep
EDIT: Dammit, Shadow! Now it'll look like your post inspired my witty comment! You stole my cool points! Bouchart
Not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME7alIe6Vtg&feature=related Not to worry everyone! Gawker has been very responsive and has kept us informed in this time of crisis.

MetalCaveman
I have a small doubt here related to all of this... And this may seem rather stupid to some: What happens if I never linked my e-mail account with my Kotaku account?

I don't even have a Facebook profile It's just that you know how they give you the option to link your e-mail account in case you ever need to reset your password and stuff? I never did that, my account at Kotau has always been independent of everything else related to my e-mail.
deanb
http://twitter.com/#!/LukePlunkett/status/14114477402234880 Hey those assholes ruined Plunketts morning. http://twitter.com/#!/crecenteb/status/14099219983896576 So careful that the gawker database is now up on piratebay with a fair few passwords already decrypted, and a fair chunk of emails with no encrpytion at all. Totally careful with it's data.
Bouchart
Like hell Gawker was careful with its data.

Mister Jack
This table allegedly will help you find out if you've been compromised but I am not sure I'm using it right.
Baguette
Times like these makes me glad I use different passwords for all accounts that is important. Except for my kotaku account which is some 123 bullshit I don't remember.
Bouchart
Jack, enter your full email address here: http://pajhome.org.uk/crypt/md5/ Then, click show options and filter. Set MD5 = that number that website above returns. My email address was compromised, but I changed passwords around hours ago.
Bouchart
I basically have two passwords, one for "critical" stuff and one for "noncritical". Gawker is the latter, but I changed stuff around anyway. From now on, the password for my characters at this MUD I play is "critical" cuz I've spent so much time there. Mister Jack
Looks like I'm in the clear. I already changed my passwords, but it's a load off my mind. I'm very paranoid about things like this. Pisses me off how I take all these extra precautions to avoid any form of identity theft whatsoever and I still got put at risk because a third party fucked up. Baguette
So what exactly are they able to get from getting our gawker accounts? I thought putting an email in was optional.
