Urban Dead is just about the only one I'd really recommend to anyone else looking a free game. Also, there's Die2Nite, which is sort of like Urban Dead's cooperative/town-building counterpart.

AvA in itself is always rife with hackers. And 12 years-olds. Perhaps if you really, really, really can't afford a game (which I doubt, everyone has some sort of stable income these days, and Team Fortress 2 is $10 at the gameshop), then it might be worth a play. Might.

Maplestory isn't one of my particular favorites, but it's violence-lite, so I recommend it for anyone who has free time or wishes to get into MMOs. The art style/gameplay of the game is hit or miss, though (it was miss for me).

Vindictus is a mixed bag. I absolutely hate it because Nexon doesn't seem to realize that everywhere else other than Korea has pretty variable internet (read: mostly unstable and not always high-speed government-mandated like Korea's is), and I think it's a stupid move to keep the system peer-to-peer based instead of moving it onto server-based instancing (which would save a lot of trouble of just trying to find a damn good party instead of dropping out repeatedly, getting frustrated, and ending up running the mission yourself, which sucks, too).

Anyways, for my recommendations:

Battlezone (1998 remake): I recommend this WITH HIGHEST HONORS. It's absolutely free, just google up Battlezone Enhanced (make sure it's by a guy named Spock. It contains the singleplayer, which is what the game is all about: first-person tactical command).

Dark Reign: Starcraft's lesser micro-cousin and more about massive armies waging warfare. Defense is killer in this one (after all, giant gun towers annihilate most things). The game's alright, but it's easy to see how Starcraft overshadowed it.

Netstorm: Floating islands! Magic! Building bridges to attack your enemy's island! It's a load of fun (and very thinking-intensive). Try it out!

I heard S4 League was pretty popular among peoples. I'm not one for animu and mango all up in my games, though.

Many MMORPGs fall into the so-called "free to play on PC" category. There's a huge variety of them (though scifi MMOs are distinctly lacking), and a lot of them have their own style and what not. I'd recommend Cabal Online, and only that one since it's pretty easy to get into and it's one of the flashiest MMOs I've ever played.

Vindictus is awesome. Don't hate a game because your connection sucks!

It has nothing to do with your/our/his/her/its connection. It runs on a peer-based network connection for joining games, which means the lag you get with various people fluctuates very rapidly. That, combined with Nexon's seemingly inability to comprehend this problem, leads to a lot of varying opinions about Vindictus.

I was the CB for it. Then I was in the OB. Then I dropped it. It's nice at first, but once you get to the later levels it's absurdly obvious it was geared to players who can pay for the ridiculous cash shop tokens to get through. Most people burn their all their silver tokens in 2-3 days. I can burn 25 in a 2-3 hour period, because I had a nice guild to run with.

And frankly, it's repetitive. You cannot deny that. The level designs are 150,000% linear.

I do not see your point with this statement, not to mention you just popped in a red herring. Thank you for reading my sig.

@topic: GameTap has a lot of free arcade style games. I used to play Metal Slug on it (and it even comes with the co-op!) for free. I'm not sure how it is now though, it seems they've changed drastically since I last played.

My point is that Vindictus isn't tailored for people who play too many MMOs. It's for people who don't want to play MMOs. Which is why I enjoy it.

I guess that makes sense. A lot of games seem to be taking this idea on nowadays. It was pretty good idea to use the Source engine though, makes for great physics.

"Tag: The Power of Paint" it's the tech demo that got the devs picked up by Valve. It'll give you something of an idea of what you can expect in Portal 2. The game sites link is no longer active, you can find the developer here: https://www.digipen.edu/studentprojects/tag/ the download can be found by using that there Google.

Daggerfall. Shit yeah. Still the biggest free-roaming gameworld to date.

I'd add:

Allegiance (open version called FreeAllegiance) http://www.freeallegiance.org/

-Hardcore space combat sim in the vein of Elite, Freelancer, Freespace, the X Series, etc.

- it's multiplayer only. Two teams in space battle for objectives

-Really good! Though I have barely played because of a tutorial bug which wouldn't let me learn how to fly and stuff properly. Pain in the ass..

Mabinogi is a pretty good open world do what you want free game.

Combat arms wasn't a bad free FPS too.

and shattered galaxy still has people playing on it.

Funny a lot of these games come from nexon.

Didn't Shattered Galaxy get a subscription thing going? I remember it changed hands from the developer when I last played it. It was quite glorious, the definite of multi-commander battles.

I watch my cousins play Combat Arms and laugh. :B

As for Mabinogi, I really, REALLY, REALLY want to get into it, but every time I do I get butt raped by a bunch of coyotes. Unfun.
