That was because it used to be a monthly payment MMO.
TheMightyEthan
Tiberian Sun and Full Spectrum Warrior, both full-fledged games, are also free to play. No, I mean, literally. They're free. lol, FSW is on Big Download for free, but it's $10 on Steam. Nice, Valve.
Johnny
My submission to this thread comes in the form of high-speed oldschool pc shooter Warzow. It's based on the Quake 2 engine and is built from the ground up to be balanced for competetive play. This also makes it highly unforgiving. http://www.warsow.net/ Edited January 30, 2011 by Johnny

Pirandello
Is this game filled with pros like him? Judging by the occupation of players in the video's name, I think it's safe to assume that 1 out of every 6 players is just like him. deanb
Who said he was a Pro? It's one of those games where you pick it up pretty quick, though very unforgiving and would probably scare a console player shitless.
Pirandello
probably scare a console player shitless. I imagine their reaction being more akin to one laden with profanities of the highest degree at the cheating noobs who play this game, and that the game royally sucks. Johnny
One of out 6 players? No. Maybe one out of twenty. That's still pretty common, you usually find one in every CA game with more than 10 players.
Harri
I would like to add a game very dear to my heart: Echo Bazaar. Set in Victorian England, where bats have taken it underground, the atmosphere is unique. You do have to link your facebook account though, but other than that, I would reccomend it. I like it because of the various ways it focuses on NON-combat. http://echobazaar.failbettergames.com/

AgamemnonV2
I'd really stay away from F2P MMO models. Free 2 Play does not actually mean "free." 10 to 1 it's just free up to a point until you are required to purchase something from the RMT online store. DDO and LotRO are popular on this because (as someone pointed out) they used to be subscription MMOs, so a lot of people are fooled into thinking they are "quality" F2P MMOs. As someone who as played LotRO since its beta and is a lifetime subscriber, let me be the first to ward you away from the game. It's going down the shitter. Anyways, I've two recommendations. First is Castle of the Winds. CotW was a tile-based rogue-like that's actually a bit addictive because (of course) of it's good rogueish nature. Just be sure to close the door when you rest in dungeons or you'll be likely to be raped by a manticore. Right, anyway. The creator has the series up for free on his own site. http://www.exmsft.com/~ricks/ The second is a bit more tricky. MissionForce: CyberStorm. If you're an Earthsiege universe fan, then you probably know CyberStorm was Sierra's short-lived attempted at the strategic aspect of Earthsiege. Now, while the game isn't "free," it was published in '96, both Dynamix and Sierra Entertainment are defunct, and Earthsiege's IP hasn't been touched in seven years. If you're "resourceful" you can find this fun turn-based strategy game that has a level of complexity that will explode your brain. Just be mindful to play the game in compatibility mode. CyberStorm does not like Windows 7.
Enervation
I prefer the term "Free to Try" to "Free to Play." Generally it's more accurate that way.

Thursday Next
BSG Online is turning out to be a fun Free to Play MMO. It's a Unity based browser game. You don't need to buy anything as the purchasable currency (Cubits) is grindable as well so Aga doesn't need to get his knickers in a twist about being "required to purchase" anything. P.S. You should probably join as a Cylon, they're pretty out numbered.
Cyber Rat
so Aga doesn't need to get his knickers in a twist about being "required to purchase" anything. No need to be rude. There are more decent ways of talking to other members regardless of whether you like them or not, so let's keep this thread civil.

There are more decent ways of talking to other members regardless of whether you like them or not, so let's keep this thread civil. Seriously? That's what counts for rude these days? Aga stated a concern that "free" MMO's often, but not always, have an element of "pay to play". I was merely pointing to BSGO as one of the exceptions (that Aga did not preclude) to that rule of thumb and indicating that he need not be concerned about having to pay to get the best equipment since the only "paid for" element (the aforementioned "Cubit" currency) can be earned over time through gameplay. I think it is clear that Aga does not in fact coil his undergarments at being asked for money. The comment was meant in a light hearted, facetious tone, sometimes referred to as "banter". However, in case anyone took me literally, let me state for the record that I have never seen Aga's underwear and as such am unable to comment as to the twistyness thereof. I don't believe I have ever expressed a dislike for Aga, I honestly don't know him anything like well enough to pass judgement. Aga's writing is competent, though in his blog posts he tends to fluff turns of phrase and old sayings. I find this to be an amusing quirk to his character, much like Dean's steadfast refusal to write "should have", and, should I find Aga to be personable, I may well rib him about this from time to time. AgamemnonV2
I agree. When I first read your comment it got a chuckle out of me. And for the record, they are rather twisty-free. BSGO certainly doesn't try to bill itself as being all that great, so I suppose for a F2P browser-instanced MMO it might be worth looking into if you're a fan of the series. I read up Kotaku's take on it and it sounded like I probably wouldn't be too thrilled with it though.
