Pirandello
I'm actually interested in seeing how the Unity engine will affect games in terms of the free-to-play scene.
Thursday Next
I agree. When I first read your comment it got a chuckle out of me. And for the record, they are rather twisty-free. BSGO certainly doesn't try to bill itself as being all that great, so I suppose for a F2P browser-instanced MMO it might be worth looking into if you're a fan of the series. I read up Kotaku's take on it and it sounded like I probably wouldn't be too thrilled with it though. It's incredibly casual. Sort of Eve - lite. No player economy or faction creation, just two sides and NPCs. It's actually my first MMO which is probably why I'm enjoying it while my Eve playing colleagues snigger at me. Thursday Next
so Aga doesn't need to get his knickers in a twist about being "required to purchase" anything. No need to be rude. There are more decent ways of talking to other members regardless of whether you like them or not, so let's keep this thread civil. I'll tell Cyber Rat you were being mean! I like how they moved to some nice-looking character models and how there's talk of "walking around" stations, but there will always be that conscious thing in the back of my mind that lets me know everyone's character is just a clone. : \ Plus they're going to release an FPS that ties with the ongoings of the MMO. And yet what platforms is it being released to? Oh, right. ONLY the Xbox 360 and PS3. Screw you CCP.

While being part of an established corporation and all that sounds cool (well, as cool as this stuff can sound) being some new guy in a universe full of big bad ships waiting to gank me and steal what little I have is a touch overwhelming. Also... another FPS? Yay! Where do they come up with this stuff?(!)
deanb
EVE was a pretty nice game to play, but far too much is just flying around in space on auto-pilot. It's not too daunting, it's just a game you'd play in amongst other games. And I'd prefer it if it was F2P for what it provides.
TheMightyEthan
I really like the concept of EVE, and enjoyed playing it for a while, but it's just too damned complicated. I can't wrap my puny little brain around its mechanics. *Edit* - EVE was a pretty nice game to play, but far too much is just flying around in space on auto-pilot. Yeah, when I played it was back in undergrad, and I would frequently select a new destination for my ship and then go to class while it autopiloted its way there. Mercurial
I ran with a corporation in EVE for about a year, but they get way too fucking serious so eventually I just stopped all together.
sixrocket
According to kotaku global agenda is going F2P, with people who bought the game for 20 bucks getting some sort of elite status. Considering just buying the game now to give the dev's some support and to level until it drops in F2P. Also, World Of Tanks is a purdy sweet little game. Works kind of like and MMO combined with team deathmatch combined with panzer commander, then add in tech trees, exp, and of course AT and Artillery. Fun little distraction, and I like how they made it so that gold doest ruin the game's balance, as every tank requires exp, which cannot be bought with gold, only earned in combat. The only tanks directly purchasable with gold also kind of suck.....Anyway, good game. Hit me up on there, will repost my tag later.
TheFlyingGerbil
Looks interesting. It's an Action RPG. Arstechnica likes it. EDIT: The game's Spiral Knights - probably should have mentioned that. Edited April 18, 2011 by TheFlyingGerbil
Enervation
I'm already playing Spiral Knights right now, actually. It runs on an Energy system, and every dungeon you go into (and subsequently ever level you go deeper into the dungeon) costs 10 energy; the max is a 100, which regens entirely over a 22 hour period. One might say that this energy restriction prevents people from playing it fervently, but I think it's a great idea - playing casually really pays off in SK. Also, the drop system is done so that every currency or material item that drops in a dungeon, everyone gets their own, as opposed to the MMO standard of only one person gets it. People can also drop in and out of your dungeons if you set the proper settings, or you can run it solo/with friends. Also, in Spiral Knights, you don't level up - rather, your equipment does. As they do, it boosts whatever stats they have little by little, to a max level of 10. Like I said, its best to play it casual. A single run in a dungeon down to the first rest level costs 30 energy, so that's a little under 1/3 of the energy max gone in a single run. The crafting system utilizes energy as well; some cost as little as 5 energy to craft, while the higher tier items cost 50 energy to craft. Overall, I'd say its rather enjoyable - again, as long as you play it casually.

Does anybody have a game that's like EVE but not as incredibly overwhelming? Something, shall I say, more casual? I've never played a game like that before but after looking a while it looks like there are several games of its kind. I'm wondering if there's a free one that doesn't require you quit your job to play it.

However, there is that 10% when someone will forcefully take over an entire corporation, when massive corporations engage in diplomatic warfare, or when the SA Goonfleet launch hundreds of smaller ships at your bigger ship, overwhelming you with unbeatable numbers. It's 10 hours of gametime, where 9 is the most boring thing in the world (Even EVE players can't stand the game sometimes) and the 10th is the most fascinating, unique experience you've ever had. Most people suffer through the 90% to get to that sweet 10%.

Space sims aren't really a big market and any potential devs probably got turned off from Spore's backlash.

As mentioned previously, it's like EVE, but without the inter-player economy. Skills level up over time, you can mine for resources or fight the opposing faction. It's not "like EVE" really, but it's a spacey MMO, so it may help if you're after some "dipping your toes" action.

AgamemnonV2
PC Gamer just posted this article. Some of these have been mentioned earlier in this thread as well. http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/03/20-free-pc-games-you-must-play/ It really annoys me how every single time anyone mentions any free PC game someone ALWAYS has to throw out LotR Online. Well, it is free, and it was a solid sub-only MMO before. Compared to any other F2P MMO, it definitely has more polish because of that point. And before we get into the whole, "Nuh-uh, it's not free! You have to purchase stuff off the in-game store!" I'll remind you that the in-game store works with points you earn in-game--points you earn from doing normal things, like completing quests and deeds. People have already managed to recreate lifetime-account equivalents with free accounts just by amassing points and unlocking basic features simply because you can create three characters on ANY server. Check this out: http://lotro.mmorsel.com/p/tpfinder.html Free players can earn 1,610 points per character (with the basics they start off with). You can create three characters per server (for starters). There are 29 servers. Needless to say, if you like the game enough and you don't want to spend a dime, you literally can get everything for free with enough time. And I say this not as a selling point to the game but out of ANGER considering how much money I've dropped on this game and now twelve-year-old Timmy with can replicate the same features I have because he doesn't have a day job. Enervation
Sounds pretty similar to DDO. They ran by an in-game currency system alongside real life transaction as well.
