Mr. GOH!
Here's a place to gab about Nihon. Fun fact; although the Kanji for Japan means "rising sun", the words "Nihon" and "Nippon" are actually derived from the word meaning "two cylindrical-ish objects", referring to the original two islands occupied by Japanese people. Also, here's a comprehensive and insightful video about Japanese cultural traditions involving the 鮨屋, or sushi joint. Edited January 13, 2011 by Mr. GOH! ceedee
As with all Mr. GOH! topics I have to ask, is this serious? I find it hard to discuss anything Japanese with a serious face.
Mr. GOH!
As with all Mr. GOH! topics I have to ask, is this serious? It's serious insofar as it is meant to be a place to discuss Japanese culture. My first post and poll do, however, contain some modicum of levity. Edit: I do appreciate the irony of being asked whether I'm serious by someone whose avatar is a woman bouncing her breasts around. Edited January 13, 2011 by Mr. GOH! ceedee
Fuk yeh, only one who voted Evangelion. I still need to see it. My favorite series so far is GitS: SAC, but my friend just went through Evangelion and said it was great so I'll probably watch it next. Pirandello
I didn't vote because I literally know jack-crap about Japanese geography. The sushi video was pretty nice, though. I didn't know eating at a sushi-ya had a lot of... custom to it. Then again, in America, we aren't particularly strapped with such customs. Seriously, though. I am of Chinese descent myself, and I could hardly believe how he literally drowned half the sushi in soy sauce. Even that's absurd by my standard. Enervation
I love how the video notes the exact angle you must place your hand while eating and entering the sushi-ya. Shall I bring a protractor with me next time?

I thought most people would get it by the point it says that if you go to a sushi-ya alone, you should always show a little guilt in your eyes. Mr. GOH!
*snip* It's in Japanese, so it must be true! :U I see your point. I wonder if similar sentiments lead people to vote for the island whose name I put in Kanji without looking it up to see what it actually was. Then again, no body has voted for anime set in a 女子校. Maybe I should have used 女子高校 instead to be a little more specific. I... don't know how to feel about this thread... 幸福 is mandatory. 降伏, on the other hand, is suggested, but totally up to you. The 女 gives it away even if you don't know Kanji. *snip* Well, IIRC the second one is a little more age specific, is all. Maybe folks are afraid to admit their love for 幼女 and let their ロリコン flags fly. But my Japanese is quite rusty, so I could be wrong.

Well, everybody's culture has problems. Personally, I love me some American culture, but it produces some of the scariest people and most fucked up things in the world and has a memory that's less than two seconds long. Japanese culture at least has aspects that take a very long view of history to balance out a lot of what appear to Westerners as crazy new fads.
