Dragon Age II

you have a dx11 capable card, yes?

Yeah - a good one, too. ATI Radeon 5870.

I could play it with DX11 up through the first battle before the actual game starts, but once you clicked 'Start Game' or whatever under Character Creation, it would freeze.

Tried it twice to make sure it wasn't just a fluke and actually was an issue with DX11.

It worked only once I switched it to DX9.

Regardless, it'll be fine in the real game no doubt.

as well as controlling my party's gear.

You'll still be able to control that, but the Inventory system is completely locked in the demo.

I thought you don't get to change or control your party's armor and weapons and such? I saw the inventory was locked in the demo, so I didn't even bother to look at a teammates.

yea I'm finding on steam forums that bioware has said that dx11 is locked out due to bugs that are supposedly fixed in the final version. One guy was complaining about 8 fps in dx11, but 100+ in dx9 mode. Safe to say, DX11 is not a good option for the demo.

I thought it was in part that the graphics options were pretty much locked out for the demo. The highest quality the game can run at for me is Medium with maximum of 8x AA. Other than that, only the resolution can be set. Everything else is locked or set in stone.

They're not actually locked out in the demo. Low/medium are DX9, high is DX10, and very high is DX11. The weird thing I noticed is that in DX9 mode it let me do antialiasing but not anisotropic filtering, but once I popped it into DX11 mode it was the other way around: I could do AF but not AA.

Because I'm incredibly lame (and also felt like it), I recorded my entire Rogue playthrough and I'll be posting it to youtube.

No commentary at all, but things included:

-Melee and Ranged Rogue combat

-A look at menus and the general UI

-Full Aggressive/Intimidate dialogue options as Male Hawke

Gotta split it up into four parts, due to the file size.

Oh, I also hate it when I read the words "MEH". I mean there's a game preview and you scroll to the comments section and see "MEH" written. That's it. No additional words why "meh" was warranted.

Oh okies then.

(Been meaning to expand my thoughts anyway, was discussing it this afternoon on Skype, so had my thoughts fleshed out)

I've already mentioned the UI. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I think a High Fantasy game should have a High Fantasy UI. Wooden engravings, mahogany red outlines, splashes of gold. The current stuff is very...computery/app like. It's slick n clean and I'd welcome elsewhere but feels very out of place.

I'd say my biggest stickler is the convo wheel. Of all the things "dumbed down" could be applied to the convo wheel is the elephant in the room. Acquiring the Mass Effect "I'm a retard who doesn't want to think on these or read anything". They may as well just made the options, for all conversations, just say Good/Bad/Sarcastic. Not like you'll lose any context since what the convo choice says and the words that now come out of your voice characters mouth don't match. At least when nothing was spoken the entire convo choice was written out so what you chose and what your dude said were exactly the same. No sudden surprises at the shorthand version being iffy.

Combat... I stopped on the demo (I'll get back to it again) because of the lack of overhead view. Primarily because I completely forgot I had other guys in my party. Because I couldn't see any of them. It felt more like I was aiding guest NPC's than controlling a party.

Also the new interface meant I never fully discovered what "Brain Power" (my name) was all about. Also starting the game with a mage with no powers? Big huge no no.

Also from my understanding the demo is the start of the game. Shittest tutorial ever. It had pretty much nothing in it tutorial wise. I only got the hang of most things because I'd played the first and it wasn't too dissimilar. But there was still a fair few things I was unsure of.

Also blocking off the inventory screen for even Hawke does not breed confidence.

Overall I'll wait on DAII: Ultimate edition in the Steam sales.

I don't feel like I'm missing on much and when I get round to being able to play Witcher 2 will be out and that doesn't treat you like a baby. Respects the players abilities.

I didn't count on having Bethany killed when I played as a mage. I'd rather have Bethany than Carver. Seriously.

It's not about class matchup, it's who I want in my damn party. And I choose Bethany and not Carver.

Also, Isabela is well-built in many places. :D

Whoah - I didn't know it killed Bethany instead of Carver if you were a Mage.

That's kind of interesting. Hrmm.

Yep. If you're a Warrior or Rogue, Carver will ALWAYS die. If you're a Mage, Bethany will ALWAYS die. You simply can't avoid it.

That's stupid. I might want to play a mage at some point, but fuck I hated Carver.

It's such a weird thing to do for balance; I wonder if the sibs play a central role in the story. My guess is that if you're not a mage, Bethany is sorta your interest in the whole plot, which deals with a conflict between rogue mages and the Chantry. If you are a mage, you nead Carver's muscle to get by at low levels.

Aw, what? So I'm stuck to Medium unless I shift over to DX11?
