Anybody ever play this game before? It's probably one of the best tactical squad shooters out there (where non-lethal is one of the keys to the game). Really exercises caution and patience, since going around spraying and praying will net you negative points in the mission (and thusly needing to start over again). You can cuff suspects after they stand down and collect weapons for evidence.

The gameplay is great and so are the squad mechanics. It's really a shame they only give you 4 other guys but they get the job done. As noted earlier, there are quite a number of non-lethal weapons to choose from, like gas/pellet grenades, beanbag shotgun, pepperball paintgun, and my favorite: the taser.

The first few missions are the easier ones, and then it shifts upward in difficulty by a lot, especially in the last mission when your squad is deployed ahead of the National Guard at a 5-star hotel because the well-armed and armored terrorists have set up bombs and the NG won't arrive in time to stop them.

Also features some pretty disturbing levels as well, like the one where you have a warrant to storm a tenement slum where cultists inhabit, or getting a warrant to arrest a known serial killer (who's obsessed with women and masks).

I never played the expansion pack, but it took what was good in the first game and improved on it.

For one, in the expansion, the squad size was upped from 5 to 10. Suspects' unpredictability was also increased, since now they were allowed to pick up their guns and fire at your squad after feigning surrender (which could be nasty at times).

The original game had co-op, but it was players only, and I could never get enough people online to do a co-op playthrough. TDM was loads of insanity, though.

Played SWAT 3 a few times on LAN back in first year.

Was pretty good. Can't remember too much of it though.

I can't see it being a game that'd go down too well with the modern shooter crowd though.

SWAT4 is drastically different from SWAT3. :P

And you're right, it definitely would not swing well with the modern shooter crowd. It requires intense amounts of concentration most of the time. You don't even have to fire a shot and could already feel how tense things are.

Naturally, I don't think modern shooter gamers like being unnerved and not firing their gun at everything that moves.

It'd be nice to see a SWAT 5 or similar attempted. But yeah it won't be COD or a COD clone, so it'll get shat on. Even BF which isn't too far deviating from the COD type games I see tons of complaints of folks playing it lone wolf style, instead of the team play style (As the recent map unlock on PC/PS3/360 showed). I guess it'd do well on PC maybe.

One problem I'd say is it almost absolutely requires headsets. Also I'm not sure how it plays on your tod. But it'd be a good DD-only MP game. Get in a handful of scenarios. See about spicing some up with dynamic AI. Then have 4 guys group up on Co-Op n play through it.

Though I'm unsure what the replayabilty would be.

SWAT 4 is one of my most favourite games of all time. I actually played the expansion as well, and while it did add some really sweet gear and AI tweaks, the new campaign left something to be desired. All the same, worth grabbing them both I'd say. So awesomely tactical.

I never got the chance to try co-op multiplayer but I always wanted to. I always thought that if they had promoted that aspect of it more it would probably outshine Left 4 Dead in regards to pioneering the heavily co-op based shooters (Irrational even used the engine to make an unreleased zombie game that's extremely similar to Left 4 Dead, but they didn't think people would like it :P). I can also see it being much more frustrating however; if one player isn't pulling their weight in SWAT 4 I'd imagine your team would really suffer. You have to keep such a close eye on guys; you've got like .2 seconds between the time they raise their gun and the time your whole team is dead to shoot them without losing points. Love that.

Also; pepper ball guns are OP. Real men use live rounds.

There's a portable LAN version of this game but my friends never want to try it. :(
