Opabinia
Couldn't this remake look better? Love that MC got his old armor back, but on the other hand 343 feels the need to modify it for multiplayer.
Mr. GOH!
How are the animations in remastered? Is Remasatered just a reskin with much higher res textures and added visual affects with no changes to the underlying game and geometry? TheMightyEthan
Is Remasatered just a reskin with much higher res textures and added visual affects with no changes to the underlying game and geometry? Yes and no. If I understand correctly, they've gone through and filled in missing frames in the animations to bring them up to 60 fps, but otherwise they're unchanged.
SomTervo
Couldn't this remake look better? Love that MC got his old armor back, but on the other hand 343 feels the need to modify it for multiplayer. There's only so much they can do, really. Devs can't change too much because reworking core aspects of the engine would affect physics, animations etc. thus intrinsically changing the game. Going pretty superficial is the only way they can do it, and graphics can only be upgraded so much. Naughty Dog had to do this with TLoU and they said it was an absolute nightmare.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, and as far as multiplayer goes, there's actually two different Halo 2 multiplayers in the pack: the original multiplayer, that looks (except 1080p60) and plays exactly as before, and then the anniversary multiplayer which is a new engine with new maps, where they tried to capture the feel of the old multiplayer but not duplicate it exactly.
Mr. GOH!
Really, though, the MCC is just a sign of 343 Spark's and Microsoft's creative bankruptcy and failure to innovate with a new Halo game. But you know what? Like heroin addicts, Halo fans don't care as long as they get the stuff that makes them feel good again.
TheMightyEthan
Halo 5 is coming out next year, 3 years after the last main entry, which is the same dev cycle the Halo games have always been on. This is filler between major releases, not lack of new stuff.
Mal
No, Halo must be a yearly release or it'll be a failure.
TheMightyEthan
Today I was helping my parents go through a storage unit, randomly came across this: Especially weird that today happens to be the exact 10th anniversary of Halo 2's release.
SomTervo
The nostalgia feels I've got so many reservations and irritations with the Halo series, but that little disk is bringing back memories of such happy times. Everything changed after that game. Am I right in saying that the Halo 2 Friends list/system basically revolutionised online play, and was obviously the model for Steam's Friends system? IIRC Steam's Friends didn't happen until after Halo 2. Halo 2 invented the 'Invite friends', 'Join friends game', 'Send message' etc. I don't recall any of that ever being in any online system ever before. Perhaps Steam's system just predated it though. TheMightyEthan
I don't know about friends list specifically, but Halo 2 did invent a lot of the online play stuff we take for granted now.
SomTervo
Deffo. Legendary. I fecking hated the campaign though, christ. Halo 3's and Reach's were huge steps in the right direction. CE still ma fav
TheMightyEthan
CE is closest to my heart, but Reach might actually be my favorite. I dunno, they're quite different. But yeah, 2's campaign is definitely the low point of the series. There was an interview a while ago that cracked me up, where they asked if they've added anything to the ending of Halo 2 to make it less cliff-hanger-y, and the guy goes "Yeah, Halo 3."
Mal
New Mombasa on legendary... fuck those snipers though the encounter with the hunters is great.
Hot Heart
I have so many happy memories of doing CE and 2 in co-op on Legendary. Especially, since 2 meant you had to nail everything perfectly. The bit with the snipers sticks in my memory because my friend managed to flip a warthog as we passed a checkpoint, so we had some improvised cover whenever we failed. Just falling out of this warthog over and over... With 3, I didn't enjoy it so much. A large part is probably due to playing online rather than sharing a sofa, but also I fucking hated the Flood in 3.
TheMightyEthan
See, I have way more fond memories of 3 than 2, because 3 I played 3-player LAN coop, all sitting in the same room but on separate Xboxes. It was epic. I also hated the Flood in 2 worse than 3. Hated it least in 1 though. So glad the Flood weren't in 4. The Prometheans had problems, but they weren't as outright aggravating as the Flood. *Edit* - It was pretty awesome though playing all the way through Halo 2 in French with my dorm roommate a month before release. Mal
For Legendary on Halo 2, I just wished that the instant fail if someone died was optional. There is definite fun to be had to walk through corridors littered with your bodies. I actually didn't tried co-op in 3 or 4 since I'm a couch purist. It isn't the same over Xbox Live. I would settle for a LAN co-op though. Also I got to agree with Ethan. The Flood in 2 were worse than CE and 3 since, well, they were the same as Halo CE. They had a shake up with Halo 3 which made them more fun to fight.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I liked that in later installments they made that insta-fail thing an optional skull instead of default for Legendary.
Mal
Since I don't recall the multiplayer from Halo 3 onwards, take what I say with a grain of salt but I think they revert back to no loadouts. Awesome since loadouts is kind of a pain. The armor abilities seems varied enough and have good enough pros/cons to make it interesting. It'll be interesting how it'll all pan out in the end... Also it is odd. I'm quite certain that I won't be getting a X1 but Halo man... it still calling.
Hot Heart
Halo 2 was the only one that did insta-fail if one of you died in co-op, and I kinda liked it that way. I never had problems with the Flood in CE or 2, it's 3 where they bombarded you with those tank-like mutations and the ones that climbed up buildings and sniped you from miles away; far worse than Jackals ever were. That was not fun in any way. Plus, Halo 2 had great enemy variety, from Elites to Brutes to Flood. As for PvP multiplayer, I really liked 3. Played it loads and loads, was always fun. Reach, I just hated. The armour abilities and everything just ruined it for me, the traffic flow on the maps sucked, and I did not want to be playing on the same boring 'a load of blocks in the sky' Forge layouts (as cool as it was having that mode). Halo 4 was actually really good, tweaked the armour abilities and other features, made it flow that much better, so I think 5 should at least be pretty good in that regard.
TheMightyEthan
Halo 2 was the only one that did insta-fail if one of you died in co-op, and I kinda liked it that way. But surely you can agree that letting it be optional via the Iron skull like 3 and 4 (and I believe CE:A) is better than having it be mandatory, right? SomTervo
3's PvP was absolutely the peak for me. Sharable replays and clips, relatively customisable armour, really amazing network code and friend support, some utterly classic maps... Shit, man, it was great times I liked Reach a lot but it wasn't the same. Felt like it was halfway between Counter Strike and Halo half the time.
Mal
I kind of want a X1 now (Kind of want a new ODST) but of course the MCC has its problems. Also I recall these guys didn't make it when I go running around in that level. They either got murdered by the hunters or by snipers.
