TheForgetfulBrain
It's been too long since I've had a good JRPG. Lately, I've been craving a good balance of enticing story and good ol' leveling. Are there any on the horizon right now? If you like, go ahead and discuss old JRPGs that you found to be excellent, but personally I'm more interested in any upcoming releases, particularly for the 360 or PS3. Off the top of my ahead, aside from a few Wii offerings and a ton of handheld offerings, I can't think of any.
Maritan
I liked Resonance of Fate, craziest combat system I've ever seen. But the story... well, lets just say I'm in the 7th chapter and there was none. Maybe you'll tell us what you've played already? It would be easier to recommend something that way. Yantelope
The only JRPG I've been able to really enjoy in recent history was Lost Odyssey. It has a good story and good music and it also has level building. The only drawback is there are a few major plot holes at the end but otherwise a really good game. Battra92
Eternal Sonata is good but not great. I need to grind like hell in it but I've been too lazy to do so. Tales of Vesperia was good so far but I only put an hour into it.
TheForgetfulBrain
Resonance of Fate looked cool, but I heard the complaints about the story. Eternal Sonata I could not get into, Lost Odyssey I had the same problem and Tales of Vesperia I was hoping they would port the enhanced PS3 version but they never did. Yantelope
It's possible that you must accept that JRPGs today are boring generic cliche fests and move on to more exciting genres.
Battra92
Atelier Rorona was fun for the 30 minutes or so I played of it.
Zenia-chan
I'm still itching to play Tales of the Abyss. I've never played a Tales title before...I grew up on Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Pokemon (if that counts) plus I've played a few other good ones here and there, like Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia. I finished the TotA anime around Christmas 2010, but I want the game! XD JRPGs might be cliche, but there's also that nostalgia factor. Many of my best childhood memories were JRPG-related...I'll just say that.
Strangelove
Does not compute.... Seriously though, eternal sonata is awful, lost odyssey is one of sakaguchis worst games, blue dragon being the worst. I tried star ocean the last hope and got bored after two or three hours. honestly, ive only enjoyed two jrpgs this generation: ff13 and white knight chronicles. The stories arent great, but theyre fun games. Honestly, birth by sleep is probably the best jrpg around. Its honestly just a good jrpg. Its on psp though. BrainHurtBoy...2
All Kingdom Hearts games are very good, but for the current gen, you should probably go with Atelier Rorona, Birth by Sleep, or just wait until Hyperdimension Neptunia comes out, because that looks pretty good. Grandia's a PSOne Classic on PSN, so I would very highly suggest that movie.
FMW
You know what game you should keep your eye on? The DS game Radiant Historia. It's from Atlus, so we know localization will be stellar. This link will take you to a trailer that highlight the potentially interesting story and battle systems: http://www.siliconera.com/2011/01/12/radiant-historia-lets-you-rethink-that-decision-about-destroying-the-world/ It comes with a soundtrack CD, so I'm willing to bet that the music is going to be pretty stellar too. TheForgetfulBrain
Yeahh... I'm tempted to get a DS eventually, 3DS in particular, but only after a year or so once the price has dipped/I catch a sale.

MetalCaveman
Feb. 15, Premium edition comes with art book, and you get a deck of cards if you pre-order http://nisamerica.com/games/neptunia/ Edit: Atelier Rorona is a really fun game too, I really liked it though I haven't played much (I'm at the beginning of the second assignment ) Edited January 17, 2011 by MetalCaveman
RadiantViper
Ever tried the Tales series? Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia? All pretty good, very nice combat systems. TotA and ToV have pretty good plots, ToS's is fairly cliched but it makes up for it with memorable characters. The problem for me with JRPGs is always the weird gameplay mechanics they tend to have, it's always so off-putting how specific and knowledgeable you need to be for some of them. TheForgetfulBrain
Unfortunately, the only one I've played was Tales of Legendia which was an utter disgrace. It had the WORST voice acting in a game ever, and any dramatic effect the story could have had was ruined by the fact that you had a dramatic primary character named 'Stella' and the inevitable moment when the horrible voice cast screams her name... You're supposed to be crying from being sad, not laughing at the emotional apex of the game. Still, I've heard good things about the rest of the series. Like I said, I wanted to get Tales of Vesperia but kept waiting for the enhanced PS3 version to get released stateside, which it seems will never happen at this point, so perhaps I'll have to pick it up eventually. NeoStarr
Resonance of Fate looked cool, but I heard the complaints about the story. Just look at it like a TV show (specifically a sitcom) instead of a movie and it's not so bad until you hit chapter 15. Characters and stuff are really good, but it pretty much plays out episodically until the very end. Then it's a bit of a clusterfuck, but up to that point you're treated with some real gems... RadiantViper
Unfortunately, the only one I've played was Tales of Legendia which was an utter disgrace. Tales of Legendia is the bastard child of the series. We do not talk about it. It never happened. (It was created internally by Namco instead of the usual developer, mostly explains why it sucks)

I demand satisfaction! Nobody slanders Tales of Symphonia and gets away with it when I'm around! I usually stay as far away from JRPG's as much as I can, but for reasons that honestly I can't even remember, somehow, I ended up playing it. I loved every minute, definitely one of my top 5 games. Now then Viper: *draws pistol* Prepare yourself. Edited January 29, 2011 by Cybronx

I played it through over 10 times, did I think every single side quest/skit/got all the costumes and titles, did a run purely to try out the affection system ... that game is amazing. Just sayin' the actual plot points aren't the most original Or do you mean my second paragraph? I should've said, I mean that about most OTHER jRPGs. Sorry. Haha, I'm just joking around with you Viper, I understand. ToS did have a few plot holes, but for me it was always the one JRPG that really captured the essence of what good JRPG's are about. I guess it could have been cliché, but in my defense I probably haven't played enough other JRPG's to have a good point of reference. I do, however, fully agree with your second paragraph. In fact, that's really the reason I stay away from most JRPG's. Even ToS had that factor in it, and was one of the very few faults I found in the game. All the best stuff about JRPGs ... game is HUGE, lots of awesome characters, and tons of missable secrets. And Presea is awesome Yeah it did have it a bit, I'm probably a little biased But for instance I'm playing Infinite Undiscovery, not a bad game but it always feels like you NEED to think 2 steps ahead, always crafting the right items and enchants (even if you don't know what the boss is weak too). Like the game but it's just kinda discouraging.
Johnny
No mention of any Shin Megami Tensei games? JRPG rule of thumb: if it says Shin Megami Tensei on the box it's probably worth trying out. Otherwise stay far away.
Mal
I actually had been told to stay the hell away from the SMT series... okay, maybe not the Persona ones but yeah. For a future game... I would say Versus XIII would be an interesting pick. A Kingdom Heart like Final Fantasy... you know, I would be fine if Final Fantasy evolves into a system like that. BrainHurtBoy...2
Stay away from SMT games? Whoever told you that was a liar and a cheat and awful. Never talk to them again.
