SixTwoSixFour
I own nearly every Disgaea game (still trying to find a reasonably priced copy of Infinite, sadly), and let me tell you, if you haven't played them, you're missing out. Over the top action, comedy, amusing plot and characters, and just so much to do! I really love it. I'm honestly baffled as to which is my favorite- I only very recently got 3, and I like it a LOT, but not being able to play it on the go (I got 1 and 2 for PSP) really puts a dent in my appreciation of the game. It's so much better when I can pop it out whenever there's nothing to do... not just when I have time to sit down in front of my TV. 3 has the best mechanics, of course, 1 has the best story, and 2... well, it has better mechanics than 1, and it's portable. So I really don't know. The Prinny games are a blast, too, even though they totally kick my ass.
Mr. GOH!
I love the gameplay. The annoying plot and characters are amusing for about five minutes before they get annoying. But the the superb and complex gameplay more than make up for the juvenile story and characters.
Mal
Laharl needs to be main in a sequel or something. Not much more needs to be said on that matter... But. Disgaea 4 is turning out to look pretty great with the improved sprites!
SixTwoSixFour
Yeah, 4 looks great. It really ticked me off that they didn't upgrade the visuals at all for 3, but it was a great game otherwise, so I let it slide. Gotta love the torture room in 4... even though they already censored it. Too bad =
TheForgetfulBrain
I loved Nippon Icchi games for a time, but honestly, they're just too deep for me to enjoy. You could plug away at any ONE of those games just as long as WoW. There really is no completing them all the way, and my brain can't handle that sort of madness. deanb
I played the first one a bit but yeah it's kinda fun, and surprisingly the "out dated" style didn't really put me off (kinda wishing I'd got Disgea 3 when it was cheap and still on shelves). But it is very grindy and a bit 'huge'. If you get what I mean.
toxicitizen
I grabbed the first Disgaea for my PSP last year. I'd been hearing great things about it for a while and was intrigued. I fell in love with it and played for about 60 hours over a period of two weeks. I only got the "bad" ending, though, because I had accidentally killed some of my party members during fights, and I never finished my second playthrough to get the good ending. I'm excited for Disgaea 4, but I feel kinda bad that I bought Disgaea 3 a while back and still haven't really played it much. I think I'm on chapter 3? All I remember is there was a cook and a kitchen involved. Oh well, I recently did some "cleaning" and cleared up a shelf above my monitor and put all my unfinished PS2 and PS3 games right there in my field of view. I'm hoping that seeing them constantly will somehow guilt me into finishing them, or something. There are some seriously good games there that I really have no good reason for not having completed. Thursday Next
Is Disgaea 3 good? I'm looking for an RPG for my Vita and well, options are a bit lacking at the mo.
SixTwoSixFour
Is Disgaea 3 good? I'm looking for an RPG for my Vita and well, options are a bit lacking at the mo. Its story is the weakest of the series, probably, but it has more classes and such than any other release- INCLUDING 4, oddly. I'd say it's well worth your time. How much of your time is up to you, given what a delightful black hole these games can be =)
Toshi
Disgaea 3 has a few interesting mechanics like combo skills between units that the other Disgaeas do not have, but it can be heavily time consuming when you factor in the item world and other side events. Leveling items to 99 and your characters to 9999 and then reincarnating them to make a stronger character takes almost forever
Thursday Next
Hmmm, I'm not too fussed by stories in RPGs to be honest. I'm more into the actual game mechanics. Does it play like anything else? Like any of the older FFs or Tales of Eternia? Or is it something totally different? (I'm fine with different by the by). Toshi
More like Tactics, but the mechanics are kinda different, like you can lift and throw characters. It's a strategy RPG.
Johnny
like Toshi says, it's most similar to Tactics. It's got the same grid-based... base... to it.

Mister Jack
A big difference from FFT is that instead of each side moving one character at a time, both sides move multiple, if not all of their characters in one turn, then choose their actions to execute before the end of said turn. Vecha
Surprised no one has posted it here.Never played any of them....thinking of jumping in once this hits the PS4.Also read that there will be hundreds of characters on screen?Interesting. I enjoy some tactics games...sounds a bit more hectic, but I think I can handle it!
Mister Jack
I have to wonder if they're gonna change the gameplay mechanics for this one. No way you can individually command hundreds of characters, but commanding an army? I can get behind that. toxicitizen
I didn't bother posting it because I didn't think there were many Disgaea fans left around. Did they actually mean 100 of your own units out at a time? That would be kind of insane. I wonder if they'll finally ditch the sprites and move on to proper 3D models for the characters. If they actually skipped the PS3 to draw more from the PS4, I guess that means a Vita version is much less likely, though. I enjoy some tactics games...sounds a bit more hectic, but I think I can handle it! Disgaea is great, you should definitely give it a shot if you enjoy the genre. It plays a bit differently, though. You can set your units' moves and attacks just a few at a time and activate their attacks without ending your turn, then do others and so on. It gives you a lot of room to strategize and find the optimal way to pick the enemies off. Most of the systems in the games are meant for you to abuse them, i.e. move your unit close to your healer, use the healer's action to heal them, cancel the first unit's move (only possible if they haven't attacked) and then move them again where you actually want them to go. Fun times!

Thinking of nabbing the 4th one on the ps vita. Grabbing the Demo now.
TheMightyEthan
I love tactics games, but can never get in to JRPGs. How much JRPG-ness is there?
toxicitizen
Thinking of nabbing the 4th one on the ps vita. Grabbing the Demo now. The PSP versions of the first two games are on the Vita store if you want to give the series a shot without having to drop 40 bucks on a new release. And fair warning, the gameplay is refined with each new release, even more so the handheld ports since they come much later and usually include improvements from subsequent games. So, if you start with the Vita version of 4 it might be difficult going back to the previous ones should you want to. For example, D4 Vita allows you to retry and quit out of maps without having to reset the game. That wasn't possible before and basically killed my habit of saving after every single map, which will most likely backfire when I eventually go back to D3... I love tactics games, but can never get in to JRPGs. How much JRPG-ness is there? Eh, I'd have to go with... a lot. It's super fucking corny and very much "We're demons but we can still be good! Friendship and love ftw!". Basically, play this for the gameplay, not the story. It has a style of meta humor that I really enjoy (the characters are kinda self-aware that they're in a videogame) and D4 had a MUCH better story than D3, but it's not meant to be taken seriously. Not even a little. Edited September 5, 2014 by FLD
TheMightyEthan
No, it's not the stories of JRPGs that bother me, in fine with corny anime shit, it's something about the way they're structured, and the grindyness.
toxicitizen
Oh. Well this is an SRPG so the structure is you basically have a small HQ with all the shops and talk to a guy in it to select missions from a menu. Grinding is minimal if all you're interested in is playing through the main story. You often hear about insane level 9999 characters but that's only for the post-game hidden uber bosses. But even if you do need to grind a little, the game is kinda made for you to exploit in that regard. There's always at least one map where the enemies are conveniently placed on XP boost panels in just the right pattern for you to kill a bunch of them with a single attack. And there are ways for you to make the enemies stronger, so by the time it'll no longer be useful, you'll have access to much better post-game grinding maps. Mal
I think it is time for me to get onto D4 and DD2. I just recall that by the time I played D3, I was tired of not having the original Disgaea gang around and the blurry sprites were getting to be a pain to look at. I didn't bother posting it because I didn't think there were many Disgaea fans left around. The original Disgaea is ranked as one of my personal favorites. So there is that (and it explains me getting tired of not having the original gang around).
toxicitizen
D4 is definitely the best one since the original, imho. I think I might actually like it more than D1. I still need to play D2 and DD2, though. Waiting for a sale on the former and the Vita version on the latter.
