Yantelope
So, I keep going back to this game trying to finish it but I keep getting distracted by other games. On the one hand, you've got a genuinely creepy atmospheric game which seems to be made with a lot of care. On the other hand you've got a game where the gunplay is just a little off and the combat can be a little disjointed. Who else has played this game? What were your thoughts? Also, I'm kind of wondering if they're going to explain half of what's going on or if it's just going to be left in the realm of creepy but unexplained. I'll be much more happy if there is some explanation. Edited January 17, 2011 by Yantelope
Enervation
I really enjoyed the story. I like the metro maps that are interspersed through the game, and in the loading screens. Such a large metro network, at least to me. Pretty ingenious to create a game based around tunnel networks.

Those two sentences would perfectly describe my feelings on Bioshock (well, I would have left out the phrase "a little"), but I enjoy the gunplay and combat of Metro 2033 just fine. On PC, for both games.
Yantelope
Yeah, taste is in there too. In fact, that's probably the deciding factor for the game. I really like the atmosphere. The world is very lovingly crafted and the graphics are fantastic. The effects with the spirits and shadows are really cool. I don't recall seeing anything quite like it in other games. I'm really waiting to pass judgment on taste until I complete the game.
TheMightyEthan
Well, I just started playing this again yesterday, and I finally got to a part where the shooting mechanic is exposed for the horrible mess that it is. It's sad, like Bioshock I really loved the atmosphere, but I can't put up with the shooting.

I really liked the game, lots of interesting stuff, and to be honest I had no problem with shooting mechanics or anything, I want to try and get the "good" ending but I have no idea what I need for that

TheForgetfulBrain
The shooting is pretty weak, and it was the primary complaint for many reviews. Which is surprising, since I believe it's from some of the people behind the Stalker team, which really has excellent shooting mechanics. TheMightyEthan
From what I gather the company that made Metro 2033 was started by a couple of the software engineers from the company that made STALKER, so I doubt they had too much to do with the actual play mechanics, they were more code guys. TheForgetfulBrain
Ah, that makes sense. It's too bad, because I loved Stalker's gunplay, but Metro's is pretty bleh.
RadiantViper
The shooting in this game seemed absolutely fine to me. The only real problems are the ones that were avoided cause I got it cheap - it's too short, little replayability, etc.
Yantelope
Anybody else have a crap of a time trying to cross the Nazi barricade? I died so many times.
RadiantViper
Anybody else have a crap of a time trying to cross the Nazi barricade? I died so many times. Is that the Frontline level? You can actually finish that without killing anyone ... it's pretty annoying though.
Enervation
Anybody else have a crap of a time trying to cross the Nazi barricade? I died so many times. It is a HUGE pain if you're trying to get across by gunning your way through. There's dozens of men on both sides of the tunnel, which makes it a near impossibility to fight your way through. Oh, and the Nazis have mounted machine gun nests. Yea. The best route that I can see, in my opinion, is to sneak around. When you start off in the Reds' side of the train tracks, go downstairs where you find a guy about to get executed. He'll start rambling about how he found a backdoor into the Nazi side of the tunnel, which is 100% factual - except for the fact that it's at the bottom of the tunnel, where the contamination is. You'll have to look around to find the ramp he's talking about, but it leads to a series of wooden plates that slowly lead you down to the bottom, safely I might add. Just watch out for the occasional tripwire and soon you'll be in the Nazi side. That's where your sneaking really comes to shine... if you can. I did that up to the point where you're sneaking around down under the left side but there was one point with a ton a guards just before you go back up the stairs where I was seen every single time so I just gunned my way through from there. Is this on the Reds' side or the Nazis' side? If it's on the Reds' side, you don't really need to go back up to find the ramp. It should be sitting on some pipes nearby. danielpholt
Sorry to drag up an older thread, but i've been playing this game today and i love it. Its nothing like i expected, and unlike most shooters actually requires a little bit of planning. That being said, i've hit a wall and have no means of getting past at the moment. TheMightyEthan
I thought the atmosphere was fantastic but the shooting was crap, much like Bioshock. Couldn't get in to either of them.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I don't think either of them had great shooting but I wouldn't call either one crap. In both games your character has weight. I noticed that people typically don't like that.
TheMightyEthan
Something about the aiming felt off to me, not the movement. I don't think it had to do with the character having weight. Either way, it's entirely subjective.
Mal
I need to get back into this. I stopped either because the baddies wth guns were totally outclassing me or that the mutants were really tearing me a new asshole. Also lack of time... MasterDex
Bioshock didn't have weight, it had mouse acceleration due to being designed for a controller. It's a well documented problem with the PC version of the game. On the other hand, you're right about Metro 2033...kind of. There was mouse acceleration there, and a weird bug where left and right mouse movement was more sensitive than up and down movement. However, there was one section where the mouse movement was purposely changed: You come across a child and carry him on your back to safety. While he's on your back, your mouse movement is affected. I remember sorting the mouse problems for the most part in Metro 2033 - Bioshock was a lost cause - but I can't recall how I did so or where I found a fix but googling should help in improving the mouse control
