Metro 2033

So, I keep going back to this game trying to finish it but I keep getting distracted by other games. On the one hand, you've got a genuinely creepy atmospheric game which seems to be made with a lot of care. On the other hand you've got a game where the gunplay is just a little off and the combat can be a little disjointed. Who else has played this game? What were your thoughts? Also, I'm kind of wondering if they're going to explain half of what's going on or if it's just going to be left in the realm of creepy but unexplained. I'll be much more happy if there is some explanation.

No accounting for taste, huh? Those two sentences would perfectly describe my feelings on Bioshock (well, I would have left out the phrase "a little"), but I enjoy the gunplay and combat of Metro 2033 just fine.

On PC, for both games.

Yeah, taste is in there too. In fact, that's probably the deciding factor for the game. I really like the atmosphere. The world is very lovingly crafted and the graphics are fantastic. The effects with the spirits and shadows are really cool. I don't recall seeing anything quite like it in other games. I'm really waiting to pass judgment on taste until I complete the game.

Well, I just started playing this again yesterday, and I finally got to a part where the shooting mechanic is exposed for the horrible mess that it is.

It's sad, like Bioshock I really loved the atmosphere, but I can't put up with the shooting.

From what I gather the company that made Metro 2033 was started by a couple of the software engineers from the company that made STALKER, so I doubt they had too much to do with the actual play mechanics, they were more code guys.

Something about the aiming felt off to me, not the movement. I don't think it had to do with the character having weight.

Either way, it's entirely subjective.

Weight refers to both aiming and movement. It felt like you were actually holding weapons, rather than holding nerf guns.

Bioshock didn't have weight, it had mouse acceleration due to being designed for a controller. It's a well documented problem with the PC version of the game. On the other hand, you're right about Metro 2033...kind of. There was mouse acceleration there, and a weird bug where left and right mouse movement was more sensitive than up and down movement. However, there was one section where the mouse movement was purposely changed:

I remember sorting the mouse problems for the most part in Metro 2033 - Bioshock was a lost cause - but I can't recall how I did so or where I found a fix but googling should help in improving the mouse control
