Mal
Going further, I swear more people (our generations especially) will just swear off social media en-masse if this and the voice tech gets to a certain point. Like fuck it, everything is fake. True fake news like I dunno, Obama shake hands with an alive and well Osama. It's going to be a shitshow in twenty years or so. Or sooner. deanb
This is something I do think about. Like if you've not got an arm, why replace it with an arm when you can...well as the lass says get a tentacle instead. Or retractable sword blades. Defo been a noticeable improvement in bionics over the last decade or so.
deanb
Foldable screens have been a bit of a elusive goal for a while now, and already with some minor Chinese phone makers launching earlier this year, now Samsung n Huawai expected next week it'll be interesting to see if it's been a worthwhile goal to chase. It's sure a feat of engineering and all that, especially making sure it doesn't wear away quickly, but I'm not super sure on the full application. The multi-pane thing is something tablets have done for an age so not exactly a Fold exclusive thing. I guess only major time I'd want a big screen is when I'm sharing photos with grandparents but honestly it's easy enough to just open the images on standalone tablet. TheFlyingGerbil
What's the actual fold like? Is it flat like the renders or wrinkled and weird like I think I've seen in other products.
TheMightyEthan
I could see it being nice for somebody like me, who doesn't like modern big phones because they don't fit well in a pocket. Weird that they chose to fold it the long way though instead of the short way, cause you're still gonna end up with it being the same length... Mal
First at Boston Dynamics warehouses then Amazon's but where will it stop? We'll eventually find out... Edit: There's also the thing where so far we are looking at human-like processes but if Boston Dynamics or any other company wanted to, they can completely optimize this and many other shipping process for machines. TheMightyEthan
Tangential to that: everyone is always losing their shit about automation taking people's jobs, but obviously automation is higher now than ever before and US unemployment is also the lowest it's been since they started keeping records.
Mr. GOH!
LOL, employment is low but the job market is dominated by shitty low-paying jobs. To be fair, automation is to blame for only a small part of that, but saying unemployment is low in the U.S. with qualification is misleading. The central issue with automation 'taking' jobs is that it does displace individual workers who most often will not be able to find a comparable job or a job wit comparable pay and benefits for years or ever. Yes, the aggregate data can be spun to look good, but individuals are hurt by lost jobs and our society has no good way to help them. TheMightyEthan
15 hours ago, Mr. GOH! said: and our society has no good way to help them. That to me is the real issue though, not the automation. I get what you're saying about people being stuck in shittier jobs*, but on the flip side people have been complaining about automation taking their jobs since the invention of the steam engine. The real problem is with a society that believes that the people need to work in order to justify being allowed to live. By all rights the fact that machines are replacing the need for human labor should be a good thing, because then humans don't need to labor! *Hence why unemployment has been at record lows for about a year but wage growth has barely kept up with inflation. I am aware that this stance does not mesh well with my above comment. My first comment was just my general irritation at people complaining about automation stealing jobs showing through.
deanb
This is pretty cool. RE the above on automation and unemployment. No idea on the US but the UK is officially lowest unemployment ever but the measurements are massaged a lot by basically having zero hour contracts and working just 1hr a week counting as "employment". There's definitely a notable drop in places like fast food and supermarket "front of office" staff with things like the screens for ordering and self-serve checkouts. And I imagine it won't be too long before there's bots in warehousing and then stacking up shelves. But yes it's sort of one of those things where the discussion is likely less on the "robots taking over" and more the larger discussion around the need to derive purpose from labour produced. deanb
https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/22/mona-lisa-frown-machine-learning-brings-old-paintings-and-photos-to-life/ Some whacky stuff. Samsung developed tech to allow things like "deep fakes" with just a single image (in this case the Mona Lisa). It's going to get easier and easier to make faked videos. No doubt this will end up popularised in weird snapchat filters or something in the Galaxy 12 or whatever but it's definitely got some horrifying consequences.
Mal
While not groundbreaking but it is an interesting device that allows people to mimic animals in that balance themselves with their tails. I think intuitively it doesn't make sense that it would balance your body (at least it doesn't for me) but when thinking about when a person carries a long load/stick how that changes your center of balance. So it doesn't have to be internally attached to your bones to work. I think the most important part about this is how it adjust itself based on user's position. It's honestly not far off from what the Boston Dynamics robots do to maintain their balance but this time it's attached to a human. Give this thing five years or way less and it'll probably become wireless. Then yeah, it will have at least some application to VR games with full-body haptic feedback. Spoiler Why the fuck do I think it'll be used in porn games? God, my mind is a mess.
TheMightyEthan
That's weird as shit... I agree with you though, it seems like the most obvious application is haptic feedback.

Mal
Basically spanks whatever we typically use. Kind what is expected when it's the size of the Hubble. And yeah, not so much a march of tech but a consequence of what we can get up to space. The US budget is being used for something... TheMightyEthan
Yeah, the tech isn't actually new, it's just that when they release the pictures they blurify them first. Mal
It kind of nice to get confirmation that this is the sort of things our spy satellites can do. Sure you can figure it out with what we know about them but to see is to believe and there's probably a better satellite up there now (mentioned in the video). If it was sent up earlier this year then it's probably still getting tweaked and setup. I wonder if Donald will give us those images... then it would be really bad. Mal
Ah shit. They're being mass produced. Also, I imagine that they could theoretically be able to replace each other's batteries so they could be really automated.
