Thursday Next
Can't have all that electrical machinery getting wet! It does sort of make me wonder why they have sprinklers and not e.g. a halon system (especially given the lack of humans in the building).

MetalCaveman
What if spot was packing a 6.5mm sniper rifle? According to the Ghost Robotics site: "(Our robots) are unstoppable, with the ability to get back right back up from any slip, fall or failure..." That's going to be fun. My favourite response: "yall saw 2 blade runners, a westworld show and movie , 10 terminator movies 2 Battlestar Galactica shows, irobot and still thought this was a good idea"

Thursday Next
What sort of range does a Spot even have? There's a lot of border and I'd imagine roomba style charging stations would have to be tempting targets.
MetalCaveman
Spot has a 90 minute battery for when it's actually doing stuff, a couple more hours if it's on standby mode. I'd assume Ghost Robotics probably has something more beefy, or is working on something like that. https://support.bostondynamics.com/s/article/Introduction-to-the-Spot-battery-and-charger TIL: At some point, DARPA along with RTI and Cyclone Power worked on a robot that could consume biomass... Where have I seen this before? lol https://www.robotictechnologyinc.com/index.php/EATR They even had to release a statement mentioning their robot would NOT eat human flesh as part of its biomass... Seems like the idea was abandoned though.
deanb
This is kind of insane. Like as he notes it's still quite alpha level (and in the interview they discussed that it's quite a slow bullet at the moment, no method of rifling, and takes quite a few seconds to actually fire - so not military ready) but quite a bit more advanced than I'd have expected. Also weird to see how much of it is 3D printed (and even using some parts - the twisty wheel on the top is exactly the same as I have on my 3D printer). Also he shows the bullets against regular bullets, but like while the size is comparable - it fires the whole bullet (hehehehehe) but regular bullets obviously don't shoot the jacket). And having watched a bunch of his videos, including some with misfires, and that is the silliest way of clearing a misfire he's ever done (just drop the bullet out the front). 1
TheMightyEthan
I wonder if it will pan out. The navy's ship-mounted railgun system was cancelled last year, after a decade in development.
deanb
So in the preceding video he does a Q&A with the developer and there is apparently a difference between a railgun and a coilgun. Which in his you can clearly see the "coil" part with the row of cylinders across the barrel. A raigun is the more flat kind. Coil gun you don't touch the barrel but a railgun the projectile is touching the barrel - which rapidly strips it away. Upside is it can get more energy into it and lob it a lot faster. It sounds like there's a practical limit to how fast a coil gun can launch something down to how fast it can switch the coils without just having the bullet stop dead in the barrel. https://youtu.be/NIl1XmEDdVY Todays video is him actually taking it to a shooting match and highlights of the first 2 minutes are "I have to ask - does anyone here have a pacemaker?" and "So what are the range commands for a coil gun?" "Hell if I know - load and make ready?".https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVs1LPg-pYE Top comment - "People probably always ask Ian "why don't you bring something more modern?" and then he shows up with this. Absolute flex." Oh they show off the "BB" style one which is quite a bit tiddier.

TheFlyingGerbil
I wonder if this will find such a place in the public consciousness as Hubble did.
TheMightyEthan
I hope so. It's certainly off to a good start. They were talking on the news and said that first picture was a 12 hour exposure, and that it would have taken Hubble a several-weeks-long exposure to get a comparable image. MetalCaveman
"It's like Battlefield but scary" Pretty accurate description. Basically, you mark your target and the systems it has make all the necessary calculations, distance, windage, bullet drop, etc, and then tells you where to aim in order to ensure a hit. It can also save multiple targets and according to Vortex's site, it's meant to be able to link with drones and other systems in the future. deanb
https://www.androidpolice.com/motorola-rizr-rollable-concept-hands-on/ This is pretty dang cool. I think it would need some tweaks to ensure rigidity but I think this is maybe a better use of flexible OLED materials for screens than the foldables (at least the clamshell type - I'll probs end up with the butterfly style at some point). Thursday Next
Similar to the RolLed TV from LG. A good way of shrinking products until you need them bigified.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, and the fact that there's no crease makes it seem less likely to break than the folding ones.
MetalCaveman
First prototype was used in last year's dunk contest, now Gen 1 is available, or was available, only 150 were made and they're all sold out, which, at $2500 per ball is quite the feat lol. I'd be interested in trying it out when/if it ever gets cheaper lol, be interesting to see how it survives outdoor use.
Thursday Next
Y tho? Like, what problem is an airless b-ball solving?
MetalCaveman
Whether it was on purpose or not, the noise, having a ball that made that little noise would have been a godsend for me as a kid lol, also, being airless means not worrying about air, I have a ball that won't inflate anymore and one that has a sizable bump on it that prevents it from bouncing normally, something like this airless ball would take care of those issues, though durability might be a problem, it might not have to deal with air, but if it doesn't last as long as a normal ball, then all that is irrelevant. Though I think this is more of a "we do it because we can" and not because they were trying to solve some kind of specific issue lol. War has changed... In the US, I recall police using drones or bots to murder people. We're going to descend further into hell
