TheMightyEthan
But, like, what is it for? They just show it walking through a work site, the only things it does is open a door and carry a cinder block. WOOHOO!
Mal
Well, for construction monitoring, I've seen drones used before by like construction managers for an overview. I can imagine that they can eventually hide in the construction trailer while they send out these and drones to take a gander at everything, at once. Kind of useful for times when subcontractors pull off unsafe shit since they know the only pair of eyes watching is busy/gone (and it's paired with a big truck). I can imagine other situations, in various facilities, that could benefit from a non-living body. Unlike tank treads, this thing can probably go up stairs and the like too. In before armed military/police uses.
MetalCaveman
Could also work for earthquakes and other disasters, send them in to look for survivors, gas or fuel leaks, etc. For military use I assume Atlas will be more popular:
TheMightyEthan
Okay, yeah, military and rescue uses seem totally reasonable to me, I was just confused by the ad that shows it in a construction site but not doing anything obviously useful there. MetalCaveman
This could be quite the game changer. Assuming further tests confirm it, and that it can be made accessible to everyone of course.
TheMightyEthan
I am extremely skeptical, but it would be awesome if true.
Mal
Probably us in the future, with the drug clutch saving us from death (for now). I wonder if there's a part two where we mutate.
deanb
Yeah I'm always sceptical about this. At my last job we had a client in america with a business on "de-aging" medicine and just felt so much like a scam. A lot of us weren't keen on having them, but they paid well so my boss was good with them. Oh wait except their scam stuff meant they didn't pay cos they'd always take issue with little bits and refuse to pay until it was solved. None of us were hugely shocked. It just seems like one of those things like perpetual motion machines. And really unless we can work on associated diseases of ageing like alzhiemers then what's the point of having a young body if you don't know who you are?
deanb
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54146718 Kinda neat to see these taking off. Does make data centres somewhat more environmentally friendly, though obviously means it favours places with large water access.
Mal
I mean, I guess we can pump the heat directly to the ocean/water body. It's not power plant runoff but it makes you wonder if it's a good idea.
deanb
I'd imagine given the vastness of water it's probably exceptionally negligible on BTUs dispersed to surrounding area. Water is a much greater heat dissipation than air (hence liquid cooling,, and our bodies on sweat system). Boat engines probably put out more heat (though don't run as continuously) Of course entire data centres might not be as good.
Thursday Next
Pretty sure heating the oceans is not a great idea. Water stores heat pretty effectively, which is not really what you want in a warming climate. I'm gonna file this under "seemed like a good idea at the time". Mal
I think by 20 years (probably sooner) they'll nail down a mechanical human-like hand. Probably do another dance routine that shows off the hands. That or basketball. By 20 years I'd expect these robots to get faster, hell, what they are showing off above still makes me go "Huh..." in a good way.

Mal
Last time with Curiosity, we didn't get this view but this time we got an upgraded younger sibling to Curiosity with cameras, mic, helicopter and all other fun stuff developed within the last few years (think self driving AI and all that). With the AI helping to drive the rover, Perseverance should be able to cover far more ground than with a pilot at the controls with severe lag so more science can be done. Then there's the proof of concept helicopter that might revolutionize travel around Mars. Especially helpful for bots (or humans? Depending on weight and thrust issues, a human sized heli might not work on Mars?) to cover a lot of ground (like for collection of the core samples for a RETURN TRIP [probably a proof of concept that it'll work]!). Also I got to say, I was really surprised how hard it was to get a sense of scale during the descent. edit: My dream rover+UAV would be on Venus. Not sure if we'll ever engineer our way out of surface conditions so that we can drive or fly around but I want to see a sky base concept on Venus. TheMightyEthan
I'm honestly surprised that's not what Amazon warehouses look like, that they employ humans at all.
Mal
I think these are just test cases until Amazon eats them up. While I think Amazon would love to do this but I think they're bound to agreements to cities/counties for providing some jobs. Only a matter of time though (and words are wind to Amazon). Also this would make mute whatever Amazon warehouse union there can be.
