Just wondering what the composition of gamers here is. I'd say by looking it certainly seem to sway in the shooter & RPG direction. What is it about those genres that draws you?

Also something else that's a bit interesting, how many of you are up for trying new things. I know alot of gamers seem to like sticking to their comfort zones and won't even give pother genres the time of day.

Personally I'm up for a bit of anything. Even gave Farmville a shot back in the day. If I had unlimited time n money I'd be gobbling up all sorts just to have a looksy. Can't say I'll be good at it or enjoy it, but that's how you find out.

And yes I'm probably missing some stuff from the genres but there's so many and so many are intermixed that the list could technically go on for 100's more.

If I've made any massive omission do pip up, but for other in general just pipe up on what you like.

I'll play just about anything, so genre doesn't really matter except in a few cases. Really, I generally avoid FarmVille-like facebook games because I think they're boring. I also don't play fighting or shmup games because I suck at them and don't find them very fun. Otherwise I'm game for anything, so long as my pickiness about things other than genre doesn't find something to intensely dislike.

Edit: Probably wanna add puzzle and MMORPG to the list of genres, too.

Not sure about the separation: 'Action', 'Hack 'n' Slash' and 'Action-Adventure'. I'd probably remove/replace 'Hack 'n' Slash' and just keep 'Economy Sim' under 'Sim'. Allowing you to add in GOH's suggestions if you wanted.

Problem is many games cross genres.

Ah crap, I put in Action twice? (It was just meant to be action-adventure :P)

Also I've feel there's enough of a difference between "German Lorry Simulator" type games and "Theme Hospital" type games to justify the split. More so than there is between TPS n FPS.

Puzzle is a big one I guess. Also I'm unsure on giving MMO's their own listing since for the most part it's just a regular genre but..with more people.

edit: Right tweaked poll. Added Puzzle since that is kind of a big one to miss, and against my better judgement gave MMO's it's own listing. Also it's now at max, so no more suggestions.

I like most genres although there are some I play far more than others. I guess if I were to put them in the order I enjoy playing them they would be (highest to lowest)

Platformers

Pinball (I consider this its own genre)

JRPGs

Puzzle

Shmups / Run & Gun

Fighters

I do play the occasional FPS (the only one I want ATM is Goldeneye.) Occasionally I will play a casual game (I mean stuff like Wii Sports, NOT Farmville and the like)

Whilst there aren't really many genres that I outright dislike I find I tend to get bored pretty easily by genres I'm not particularly good at, which I suppose is mostly laziness one my part. Even for the genres I didn't select, though, I can usually think of an example of the genre I enjoy. In racing for example there's Mario Kart, Burnout, Stars Wars: Episode 1 Podracer, Quantum Redshift (when I was younger at least, haven't played it for years), I even get out my copy of PGR every now and then, so I suppose I'm more open-minded than I give myself credit for.

EDIT: As if to prove it, I didn't select Racing or Fighting but PGR and MvC2 are both in the last 5 games I played on my gamercard down there.

Right now I play a ton of action games including first and third person shooters. I play racing sims and action racing. I play WRPGs like Mass Effect but not so much Fallout. I'm more about story than exploration. I also play MLB The Show but mostly in the Road to the Show mode that plays a little like an RPG where you create a character and work your way into the majors. I will also pick up pretty much any game that gets really good reviews to see what the fuss is about.

I've gotten almost completely worn out on Guitar Hero/Rock Band because I didn't want to practice to play fake guitar. I also got tired of JRPGs because it seems like the stories aren't very good anymore. Platformers also don't hold my interest that much usually just because I don't care about the story much either. I'd like to have some reason to get to the end rather than just stopping Dr. Eggman.

Im into most genres, but anything that is third person gets my immediate attention. I really have never liked fps. I like so of them because theyre too good to ignore, otherwise i avoid it.

I just think a first person view limits games too much. Bosses always suck in fps. Always. Stages are like mazes and just....i like seeing my character. Sorry.

I find first-person more immersive. It's "I am this person" as opposed to "I'm controlling this person".

*Edit* - That said, obviously games like The Force Unleashed wouldn't work in first-person, and I prefer third-person in racing games so I can have a better field of view.

I don't think I ever really had a genre preference. I actually make a bit of an attempt to follow up each game with a very different one. There was a point in my early university years where I was hardcore into shmups, wouldn't play anything else, but that maybe lasted a year at most. The only genre I tend to specifically avoid is MMOs, mostly because I read the horror stories surrounding them and think "Yup, that sounds like me!" (though I did get into the APB beta; but sadly it really is as bad as everyone says). I actually shrugged off RTS games in the period between WarCraft 3 and StarCraft 2 since I wasn't all that impressed with WC3 or anything else that was being released around the same time. I picked up SC2 though and my StarCraft-obsessed friend said that I was a bit of a natural and should keep up with it so I did, and as a result I've been playing RTS games more than anything lately. I still think the genre itself is somewhat lacking in great titles though; I've been trying to play a bit of catch up with the CnC series(es) and Supreme Commander and such, but thus far Company of Heroes is really the only other RTS that blows me away.

I really love first person shooters but I'm totally burnt out at this point too. The saturation is a bit ridiculous, and it's getting to the point where developers are favouring solid gameplay over new ideas. While I can see how that creates a better competitive environment for longer lasting multiplayer, when every single game does it it gets to a point where there isn't enough variety between the titles and all you're doing is splitting up communities. I'm seriously thinking that that Gameloft CoD rip off on PSN might actually be as worthwhile as picking up any of the other Modern Warclones on the market right now.

I'll play pretty much anything, the only boxes I didn't check off were: Other because I couldn't think of anything and economy sims since I have no idea what those things are :P

I don't "prefer" any genre, sometimes I'll play only FPS for a while, then I'll get bored of them and move to JRPGs, get bored of them, move to something else and so on, so I can't say I lean towards any genre in particular, it depends on each individual game :P
