Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 1/2/3, Killer Instinct

Might as well keep this out of the Crappy ports thread. And I think it warrants discussion. Personally, I always thought Killer Instinct was boring as hell. It had all the boring parts of MK and Street Fighter with extremely toned down violence.

Then again, I never liked the SNES version of SF2, so maybe I don't have much say. Was always a fan of MK2 and (U)MK3

ORIGINAL POST: An MK without blood is like Killer Instinct and we all know how crappy that game was.

Genesis ftw.

Genesis ftw.

Excuse me? Killer Instinct for the SNES was badass. It wasn't as pretty as the arcade or N64 versions, but the gameplay was superb, the graphics were good (by SNES standards) and for the record, the game had plenty of blood.

Wait, you're being sarcastic with how good the gameplay was right? That video shows how bad it is.

It's definitely flawed by today's standards -- repetitive combos, an occasional glitch -- but for it's time it was great. I'm not being sarcastic at all. The action was fast and fluid, and the controls were very responsive. If you wanna add some objectivity to it then we can upload videos of MK I and II along with Street Fighter II to just see how they all add up. (I think that's another topic though.)

Killer instinct is a tough one. It's definitely not a bad game but it wasn't the same as the arcade either. It was only made worse by the fact that we were promised a proper home port for the Nintendo (ULTRA!) 64 which never came. KI Gold was not the KI we all wanted.

*sigh* indeed. It was basically KI 2, which I didn't like as much as the first one. Cruisin USA was also butchered when they ported it.

Not to snuff the debate or anything, but I liked most of those games and mostly because of their variety.

I loved Street Fighter II because it arrived first and it's gameplay remained solid and competitive years later. I loved MK for the blood, "realism" and fatalities. And I loved Killer Instinct for it's speed, combos and (in the case of the arcade version,) it's incredible graphics.

Killer instinct isnt around anymore cus it sucked. Mk has chabged their fighting system thousands of times because it gets old and starts sucking. The street fighter series is still played and loved by millions while introducing fresh new things with its familiar gameplay.

Mk on the genesis was awesome and killer instinct was ugly just because i hated those donkey kong country graphics. Fakeass wannabe 3d.

Killer Instinct isn't around anymore mostly because it was created by a developer that had bigger and bolder projects to work on (Goldeneye, anyone?). At the time it also was tethered to Nintendo, a company that generally didn't want violent games on its consoles.

And given the resurgence of fighting games, Ken Lobb said that he'd like to bring back Killer Instinct. http://www.destructoid.com/x10-killer-instinct-3-is-still-a-possibility-163876.phtml

Actually many would argue that a lot of those MK changes were not good ideas. The run button and new combo system come to mind.

I agree. I know there's a lot of people who disagree, but I always preferred MK as a casual fighter without too many complexities. For me it was never about balance and deep gameplay mechanics, it was about having adolescent fun -- buckets of blood and entertaining fatalities.

EDIT: What's up with some of the anti-KI hostility on this board? You guys act like it's Primal Rage.

I disagree with KI being fine for its time. It wasn't nearly as solidly built as Street Fighter 2 (especially once they started tweaking the gameplay and adding pre-fixes) and it wasn't up to MKs low standards either and that ridiculous video is proof of that. The game just doesn't flow. I've played all of these titles within the past 6 months (I even was taught KI at the time I played it and the guy was pointing out how terrible it was and how broken it is) and KI definitely stands up the least. I played KI, SF2, and MK... 3 (i think) on SNES and then tried UMK3 with an emulator on my phone again. KI is definitely miles behind the other games.

MK was never as good of a fighting game as SF2. It was popular for the blood and the violence but it was never as balanced or as deep of a game. I think that's kind of why it's not retained the following that SF2 has.

THIS!

I remember all the kids playing MK and MK2 in the local arcade and I never got it. Of course, my parents didn't allow me to actually play MK games as they were too violent. Besides, who'd play MK when the same arcade had Space Shuttle by Williams? Not me! I do remember playing and loving Street Fighter 2 and I still play it (and other Capcom fighters) while MK is a distant memory of a fad that outlived its welcome.

I liked Eternal Champions for the backstories (I was young at the time!). I also quite enjoyed KI Gold.

My fave unappreciated fighters were Fighter's Destiny and Bushido Blade. I loved that those games both had an instant KO. Also, getting the final boss in Bushido blade was frickin' hardcore.

the problem with KI gold is that we were promised a perfect home port of the original KI or even KI2 and it never happened. Why Rare went so hard in the FMV direction while knowing fully that Nintendo was going cartridge based for the N64 is a mystery. The gameplay was a pretty good port though.

KI was a novel twist on the fighting games and it was a little deep if you understood how it worked. The problem was that you had to read a short novel to understand exactly how the combo system and the breakers and finishers all worked and most people just never understood the game. It was tons of fun though and has one of the best soundtracks of any fighting game.
