Hot Heart
Watchmen was alright. I expected it to be terrible but it was alright. One of my friends insists that the film ending is better than the book ending. I think they both suit their own medium/story.
deanb
Yeah, while normally I'd begrudge a change to a books plot, especially the ending, it does kind of fit a bit better. I have a feeling that the books ending wouldn't of gone down as well as the films.
Mr W Phallus
Oo don't get me started on Watchmen.
Strangelove
I loved watchmen. Specifically the directors cut. Im also glad they changed the ending. The fucking squid alien thing was retarded.
Mister Jack
I gotta agree, the film ending made way more sense, and this is coming from a guy who cherishes the comic.
Mr W Phallus
You're all so wrong.
Johnny
Even if the movie ending was worse (And I would argue that it's better), I'd forgive it all for Jackie Earl Haley's amazing performance. Seriously. So good. I think the whole theater burst out laughing at "I'm not locked up in here with you, you're locked up in here with me!" Mr W Phallus
It's not the changed ending that bothers me at all. Nor am I a fan boy of the comic - I do love it but I only read it the Christmas before the film came out because I'd seen the trailer and was really looking forward to the movie so it's not like I had some deep-ingrained reverence for the source material when I first saw the film. It's the fact that whoever it was who played Silk Spectre II is a terrible actor. It's the fact that Snyder's direction, which is average at best, is completely unsuited to the tone of the material. It's the fact that Adrian Veidt/Ozymandius was shockingly miscast and given one of the most clichéd and horrible super-hero costumes I've ever seen in a film. I'm sure there's plenty of other reasons why it's a bad film but I'd have to watch it again to cover them all and I really don't want to do that. Neither the performances of Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan or the (admittedly excellent) opening credits or the Dr. Manhattan origin scenes make up for the fact it is just not a good movie. Now can we stop talking about Watchmen now? It's making me nauseous. (Oh and no offence meant, to each his own etc. but Watchmen...really?) Strangelove
Sounds like you have really high standards. What superhero movies do you actually like?
Mister Jack
The Silk Spectre actress was awful, I'll give you that.
Hot Heart
I'd still do her, right in her manly chin. Uh, what were we discussing?
Strangelove
To be quite honest, silk spectre 2 just wasnt a very interesting character in the comic either. Shes probably the most barebones character compared to the rest. She has an important history but in the present shes pretty boring and doesnt really do anything important. At least thats how i felt when i read it.
Mister Jack
Yeah I do agree with you, but I'm just speaking purely on the actress's abilities. Just because you have a flat character doesn't mean you should be flat in your portrayal of her.
Strangelove
Has anyone actually seen the theater version? Ive only seen the directors cut but i heard the one released in theaters cut out so much that it made the entire film really confusing and empty.... Moreso for those who didnt like the directors cut either. Supposedly theyre two different films.
Mister Jack
The theatrical version cut out all the Black Freighter stuff, the death of Hollis Mason as well as Dan's reaction to it in the bar, and a few short scenes at the newsstand. Strangelove
Hollis mason's death is the best scene in the film. Its probably one of my favorite scenes in film ever. Its great.
Mr W Phallus
Batman Begins was really good. Dark Knight was better although it lost a lot of pace in the latter acts. The original Burton Batman is campy good. It's been too long since I've seen Spiderman 1 or 2 but I don't remember there being anything particularly bad about them. The Incredibles is amazing. I wasn't particularly impressed by Iron Man (I was watching on a distant plane TV and listening through crappy headphones though), I think mostly I was disappointed it didn't live up to the hype. Iron Man 2 was a bit too messy. Hellboy was quite fun. Blade is good fun, although I'm sure that's partly nostalgia (first 18 rated film I ever saw) but I can't really remember the sequels. I can't really think of any other superhero films I've seen, but the only one that I'd say is as bad as Watchmen is probably Spiderman 3 and the other Schumacher(?) Batman films, although I've seen them so many times on tv I'm inclined to say they're not that bad. I don't think I have high standards for films, I just have standards is all. When people say 'sure it wasn't a very good film but it's just a popcorn flick' etc. it baffles me. Why settle for a sub-par films just because Hollywood are too complacent to aim higher? Plus it really annoys me that the average person, who tends only to hear about the big-name 'blockbusters' are then blown away by any half-decent film that manages to sneak into the public conciousness amongst all the usual Hollywood crap. My friend, who doesn't watch a lot of films, called Inglourious Basterds 'the best film ever'. Now Basterds is a good film, I'd even go so far as to say the script is brilliant, Waltz's performance was superb and you can't go wrong with Brad Pitt. It is, however, far from being 'the best film ever', unless, of course, you are only used to seeing the usual shit Hollywood churns out. Urgh, sorry to rant, I'm just in that kinda mood. Mr W Phallus
I'd still do her, right in her manly chin. Uh, what were we discussing? As shallow as it makes me, once I noticed the mole I just couldn't get it out of my mind. Oh who am I kidding I'd do her anyway, mole and all. Oh and I haven't seen the Director's Cut. Yes, I know what you're all gonna say, I can't judge until I've seen it how it was meant to be seen. Well a few good scenes don't make up for the myriad shit ones, so unless they removed all of them in the DC I ain't changing my opinion. I agree with all this but I think Watchmen was great and I was one of the people who read the comic (twice) before the movie came out. The "ultimate" cut was definitely as close as they were going to get to the comic with the more simplified ending. Also, the opening credits= genius. Well I've said I don't like it, I don't want to harp on about it like a broken record. I should probably see the DC mostly because I want to see the Tales of the Black Freighter stuff but I don't have high hopes. If you liked it though, please feel bad about yourself. Anyway I won't be replying for a while cos I gotta get my drink on, so don't think I'm just pussying out of an argument.
