AcidCrownie
*lens flare* Truthfully, though. I love JJ Abrams reboot.

King Jimmeh
My Dad has always watched the Star Trek series, but I never really got into them myself. That being said, I went and saw the new film at the cinema and thought it was great stuff.
Bouchart
I don't know if I'd consider myself a Star Trek fan, but if it's on TV, it's generally better than anything else that's on at the same time.
superfrogsavestokyo
My dad and I purchased the entire Next Gen DVD Boxset for 100 bucks online today. Which site did you but it from? I started watching ST:TNG when I was seven years and had been hooked since. Well that's a lie. I didn't see all the episodes of Enterprise, but I did watch the entire first season and a couple from the second. As for the JJ's reboot, it's decent and bringing more fans to the fold. Went to theater by myself and had a blast because it seemed everyone else did the same. Especially when Tyler Perry was on screen and ten people said out loud, "Tyler Perry?!?". TheForgetfulBrain
My mom became a huge Star Trek fan when I was about 3 or 4 or so - not to the point of going to conventions all dressed up (I mean, we lived in the middle of nowhere), but seeing pretty much every episode etc of the various series. So by proxy, I'm a pretty big fan too. I really liked the J.J. reboot, but I absolutely hope the show returns to its original medium of television soon, and in top form. IMO, with so much of the original team dead or scattered, Bryan Fuller (of Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies fame) would be the perfect person, as he got his start by getting his fan script submissions made into episodes for Deep Space Nine and then wrote like half of Voyager (which, I am aware is not a favorite among fans, but it sure was better than the garbage that the most recent 'Enterprise' was). Plus, he's expressed interest - so fingers crossed that pops up sometime.
deanb
I was a big Next Generation fan. Haven't really seen the original stuff. Voyager and Deeps Space Nine I watched a bit of but I can't remember much. John De Lancie was awesome. Patrick Stewart was awesome. Everyone was awesome. Except that teenage kid...Wesley? He was annoying. Didn't he die in a ship crash or something at Star Trek Academy? It had some good stories and was an enjoyable show to watch while washing the dishes. As for the new version. It obviously took some liberties and really updated it for a modern audience. I loved the time travel twist to explain how it's still part of the continuity but it's own thing. Does open some doors in the future. I'd be fine with it just being a film for now. A TV series certainly wouldn't have the same cast or production values which I think could hamper it. (The recent movies had the production values, but tbh Patrick Stewart is an old man, he can't pull the moves he used to)

(The recent movies had the production values, but tbh Patrick Stewart is an old man, he can't pull the moves he used to) But every Star Trek TV series has been a complete new cast and crew - that's the modus operandi of the series, so I think it absolutely would work, as long as there was good writing, acting and direction (as well as a compelling new setup for the show). Regarding Wesley - ha. Yeah. Everyone hated him. But the actor, Will Wheaton, actually turned out to be a very, very good guy. He's huge in nerd culture and does a talk that's very popular every PAX, I believe. Apparently he's one of those few people that you cannot hate. Unless you're watching his old Star Trek episodes. Knifington STRIKE
This thread brings back the painful memories of being the child of a trekkie, being dressed up in a tng red shirt uniform complete with captain's ranking pins and having sweaty geeks ooh and aah at the fact that a dork like my dad was able to reproduce twice, creating a small light of hope for themselves at the end of the dark tunnel that is their wasted existence. I did like the reboot movie though. Looking forward to the eventual sequels.
deanb
Yeah the new one was pretty good and tastefully well done. Sure it was full of plot holes, but I liked the time travel aspect thing and how it ties it up as not quite a reboot but not quite a sequel. Also Simon Pegg

toxicitizen
Yeah, the 2009 Trek was definitely not in line with older Trek, but they managed to craft the perfect story for it to not be just another stupid reboot. And now they can actually do NEW stuff with the characters/universe. Mix things up a little.
deanb
What plot holes?... The planet Kirk n Spock are dumped on is close enough to see Vulcan get swallowed up that it should be a moon. But unless Enterprise was warping away in circles they took some time to get from escaping Vulcans collapse to dumping Kirk that theoretically should of put them lightyears away from the moon. Spock never goes into too much detail on the collapsing star which would of been nice to maybe pre-emptively sort out. Also the supernova was much more powerful than anything even remotely possible from a supernova. Also why if only one drop was needed was an entire vat of sun/planet destroying material put on spocks ship? Surely you'd only give him a few ml's and stored the rest on Vulcan? Still a good film, just a few things that bug me.

toxicitizen
Plus, Nero is pretty much the most retarded villain ever. Seriously. He sees his homeworld getting destroyed and gets sent 100 years to the past. What does he do? Destroy the homeworld of the guy who was too slow to save Romulus. Instead of, you know, going to Romulus himself to warn them and/or give them technology that they otherwise wouldn't get for a damn century! Which would give them a significant advantage over the other civilizations of the galaxy. Edited January 7, 2011 by FLD

I guess I'm not that hardcore of a sci-fi fan. :/
deanb
Oh sorry. I do hate when that happens. It's still overall a pretty good film, just a few things in the plot got to me. I don't much care for 'hard sci-fi' but some stuff just seemed like they asked us to throw a bit too much to the wind n not pay attention to. Which would give them a significant advantage over the other civilizations of the galaxy. Thank you! I enjoyed the movie, but this point made me rage. One of my friends explained it to me like this: Nero was probably good at his job (miner), but lost his marbles. Since he doesn't seem all that intellectual either judging from his "wonderful" revenge plan, you can't really expect him to reach beyond his current self's hurt. He couldn't think out the consequences such as if he saved Romulus, that his wife and unborn child would be saved. As well as him not experiencing that his traumatic timeline. Also if he didn't immediately try to attack Spock, Spock could've explained it to him and hopefully disable the current technology to not give Romulans the edge. It's kind of sad how the more savvy Romulans would have killed for an opportunity like this only to have it land in the lap of the one Romulan who couldn't strategize.
