excel_excel
Are they doing the HD Next Level digital restoring with all the series? because I'll definetly getting Deep Space Nine and Voyager if they are. I liked Captain Janeway. Although she was a bit wooden at times.
deanb
Cos this happens if she doesn't pay attention. Also did I miss something, or did the costume dept, cos 7 of 9 is missing her eyewear there.
deanb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_nVEm5Yc3c Given the amount of gobbledegook they come out with I'm amazed they don't end up fucking up their lines more often. They hug an awful lot too.Director sounds pissed.
deanb
Screenplay by Simon Pegg, and it seems like that might be quite prevalent. Doubling down on the Beastie Boys Paradox too. Also TIL that next year is the 50th anniversary. Aww, cute wittle scifi baby.
deanb
Second trailer for Beyond, much much better than the preceding. Also who the hell is that voice over early on cos I recognise it but can't quite place it. Also fucking hell that warp bubble shot is a beaut. Also the new Star Trek TV show has been announced for next year. People have picked up on the phrasing of "New Crews" as a "hmm, wonder if that's a crew per-episode kind of thing or more than one show coming out". https://youtu.be/xXpPweAooeE
TheMightyEthan
I think the voiceover at the beginning is Admiral Pike.
deanb
Nah, I know that one. The voice from 0:37 onwards. I've checked on IMDB, which I guess I should have in the first place but I was like "as if they'll list "Trailer Voice: This Person"". She is the High Command of the Federation, played by Shohreh Aghdashloo. Who we'll more likely know voice wise as: Admiral Shala'Raam Vas Tonbay (She's also one of the main scientists in the third X-Men film: )
TheMightyEthan
Oh yeah, I totally recognized the Quarian admiral, but since you said early on I thought you meant the beginning.
Thursday Next
CBS seem to have got the amount of lens flare right at least. Oh, also, I always recognise that woman as Dina Araz in 24. http://24.wikia.com/wiki/Dina_Araz Edited May 23, 2016 by Thursday Next
deanb
Smithsonian have renovated the original Enterprise model.
Saturnine Tenshi
Beyond was surprisingly good. I'm interested in how the new series will turn out. I think the main character is meant to be someone other than the captain?
deanb
So a minor glimmer of light in the otherwise hampered Discovery is that Jason Isaacs will be the captain. So you know at least the ship won't have any muggles.

TheMightyEthan
I forget that that's going to be on Netflix outside the US. Stupid CBS, sabotaging their shows by only putting it on their own streaming service here.
deanb
Anyone else watching Discovery? I'll continue giving it a watch, but I'm really really thrown by how dark it is. Even the Abrahams Trek is bright and sparkly so it's not some kind of "oh but modernisation". I'm also suddenly aware that might think "dark" as in "grim n gritty", but I mean as in "everything is shades of black and grey". Also their tripod is fucked, really need to fix that third leg, every shot is off at a tilt. Do it in the space bits for sure but it looks pretty dang stupid otherwise. Hot Heart
I watched the first couple of episodes of Discovery, going in completely blind. Never been a Trekkie and thought all the new films were shite, but I was hoping this would be a decent jumping-on point in some way. However, it appears to be some serialised show about one character and the beginning of a war which doesn't really interest me. I'm hoping this was just the approach for the two-part pilot, which is meant as a prologue... since Jason Isaacs and the titular ship are yet to even appear... . I guess I'll see how it goes with the next episode.
deanb
Yeah it's a bit weird because I do remember reading/hearing about it being a show that was more...anthology style but nope it's a continuing arc thing. It actually ended quite well as a singular piece, but then yeah got the "coming up in star trek discovery" and it was focused around Micheal(was that her name?) rather than a bunch of semi-standalone episode/arcs. deanb
I've literally no idea when this is set anymore.
deanb
Yeah this is getting pretty good. I'd say it's still not quite old-style Trek, it's Trek in a newer TV expectations skin. Mainly in that it's has a longer continuing arc rather than individual "monster of the week" style of the previous runs. The first two episodes are pretty much a prologue for the show, with the main action being episode 3 onwards. I am still strongly of the thinking that USS Discovery shouldn't be around technology wise in the timezone it has, but I've a feeling we're going to get a better explanation around that...soonish. TheMightyEthan
If only it weren't locked inside CBS's stupid premium streaming site.
Hot Heart
So, I'm all caught up on the series after getting lax following the break. Dayuuuuumn, it got interesting. I mean, I'm not really a Trekkie and I think the new films suuuuuck but this seems to tread a fine line between an action/thriller show and what I envision Star Trek as. I think, in the same vein as what The Last Jedi did with Star Wars, it's exciting because it is toying with stuff and going in new directions (or, at least, it's all new to me). You never feel settled with "this ship is their home and join them on a new adventure each week". It seems to be blowing through what you might normally expect to be major story arcs that go for two to three times the length. Maybe it'll be a case of "the flame that burns twice as bright lasts half as long" but, for now, it's entertaining stuff. As for complaints, I'm hoping I've written enough ahead of this spoiler section so it doesn't get shown in forum previews but otherwise I've tried to be as vague as I could early on and also here is some more text to make sure of that. OKAY THEN. While it was exciting to experience the twist, it was a shame to see it go in that direction. For a second, I figured maybe this is why Discovery doesn't seem to be present in canon (or so I'm told)... because it became a ship stuck in a parallel universe, helping Lorca lead a righteous revolution but nope... English dude plays the villain again (well, both if you count Latif as well, I suppose).
deanb
Latest episode spoilers: Spoiler "Hey we've gotten rid of the Terran captain running our ship" one episode later "So here's your new Terran captain" But yes recent developments did make me think they'd gotten around the "this tech never shows up in later episodes" but I'm now back to having that issue. (also previews don't load spoilers, or at least shouldn't)
deanb
Not keen on having a super-small galaxy. Bad enough that it ended with Enterprise showing up near the end of the last series but now the biggy this series is around Spock. Otherwsie I'm all down for some more Disco Very. deanb
Picard teaser. Though without the uniform he looks more like Xavier than Picard. So RE the last thing while I was a bit down overall with the story (though it eventually went where it should have been from the get go) I really really loved Anson Mounts Captain Pike. Like I'm there for a spin-off show.
TheMightyEthan
Discovery is exclusive to CBS All Access, Picard is on Amazon... it's like they don't want me to watch Star Trek...
