Bulletstorm

Really glad that Staysick picked up on the not taking itself seriously thing. I try not to evangelise about my companies games too much, but I do think Bulletstorm is a significant break from the norm.

Melee combat is actually enough fun that you don't mind running low on ammo cos it just means that you get to focus on kicking and leashing enemies into hazards. The whole game is obscene in every respect, the violence the machismo it's all turned up to the max, it's totally brutal fun with none of the melodrama of Reach or at least not that I've seen.

It's pretty much the "Crank" of video games.

I was already planning on buying this day 1, the demo just confirmed that I made the right choice :P Loved the "introduction" to the demo :P The fact that this game is also more about "oh hey! how can I kill those dudes that are running towards me?" instead of "oh crap! Run, take cover!" is awesome! \m/ \m/

Only played it once since I didn't have time when I downloaded it and now I'm playing Dead Space 2, but I'll try to get my score up later :P

I'll also download the PS3 demo, to see which controls feel better to me.

That's what I'm liking about this game. Tongue firmly in cheek, boot laces deep in ass.

The thing that bugs me about reactions to this game is that a lot of the times the same people are against the game because its juvenile humor, are also clamoring for the final release of DNF, which has very similar humor.

I love Crank. Guilty pleasure. :P

Are we still talking about video games?

Haha....yeah. Just about about videogames. Seriously, I do love how everyone rolls their eyes at yet another dull, brown, shooter like CoD and BF. Take the mick out of Gears for it's ridiculous attempt at serious characterisation, then get all snooty when a game comes along and says, how many ways do you wanna kill this dude?

I don't think it's still in the game, but one of the early versions had a great MP map where you were at a nuclear weapon test facility. Every few minutes an alarm would sound and you had like 15 seconds to get to a bunker before it sealed shut. You'd be in the middle of a firefight then be scrambling to the nearest bunker only to find you were the only red guy in a room full of blues. Hilarity and explosive death ensued until the dust settled and the bunkers opened again and the survivors stepped out. Anyone caught outside died in a nuclear holocaust.

Fun times.

I'm not looking forward to DNF either. I will say I've been tempted to give that Max Hazzard a blast though.

I also take the piss out of COD's storyline (specifically MW2), not played much of BC2 to comment, or Gears. I liked MoH's campaign though (aaprt from the bit with the magical taliban that grow out of walls)

That sounds completely fucking awesome.

D:

That sounds... awesome.

Too bad its probably taken out.

One thing I'd love to see in a game like this, is in a nod to the DOOM franchise and other fps games from yesteryear, have the ability to have a bunch of guns at once (like 8 or 9), character models be damned, and add a quip in there like "where are you hiding all those guns?" "what does it matter, I'm just that fucking awesome!!"

Too many times it seems you have to choose between 2-3 weapons to carry on your person for realism's sake. I was glad when Doom 3 decided not to follow suit, was thinking Bulletstorm would also reject this.

The main reason I'm interested in both DNF and Bulletstorm is their humor, otherwise I wouldn't even look at them :P

From the demo it seems like you have 3 or 4 weapon slots... Not what I was expecting but whatever, it'll be fun anyway.

And IMO there should be more games that let you carry a full arsenal with you :P

Edit: As long as it makes sense at least, in a game that's pretending to be "realist" it wouldn't work, but stuff like Bulletstorm and DNF would be awesome with the option to carry all the weapons instead of switching and stuff :P

I think the "two gun carrying limit" versus "arsenal carrying limit" argument depends on the game.

To me, in Uncharted 2, having only two slots fits. IRL you'd be clattering about and wrestling with straps if you had two large rifles, and the name of the game is seriously-action-toned realism in Uncharted. Plus, it only takes half a second to roll over to the gun you'd like to use, swap to it, use it for a few seconds, then roll back to swap back. It's fast paced and all.

However, I felt GTAIV would have benefitted from having a 2-3 gun limit. The whole game goes for this cinematic realism thing- but then you can carry a sniper rifle, RPG, and assault rifle inside your jacket pocket. Yeah right. It also would have made the gameplay much more interesting imho if you only had a couple of weapons to hand at each moment, it would have fitted with the action more.

In Bulletstorm, I think having 4 slots is ideal. With 9-10 weapons at once, you'd be awkwardly flipping through the interface to swap to a different gun for a better combo- if several enemies are flying through the air in stasis as you try to get the right gun, you probably don't want/need that fumbling. 4 slots, as Hot Heart said, would be best: you want to be able to switch to any of your guns in a moment, each mapped to a button. It should also add an element of strategy- choosing 4 guns before you play that can combine or combo in an interesting way, and trying to make the most of them throughout.

Played the demo through a few times (Just to feel I got my bandwidths worth out of it; only 6 minutes, for 1.2GB? WTF.. Also gonna do some more n beat :D)

Firstly: Yeah that video at the start was a bit pointless, I feel it'd of been better to work in in-game tutorial type things. It has bit of it, like telling you to kick the cupboard, just needed some more.

So the concept is sound. The whole Skillshot stuff, pretty fun and different, though it feels there's only really a dozen or so skilshots, and you're gonna end up sitting on playing with just a handful. I think maybe some more environmental stuff like the Voodoo doll might be cool.

However the dialogue is just trash. Games really need to start hiring on proper writers. It's like they wrote down every word that made them giggle when they were 12 and decided to cram it into the dialogue. I'm sure the woman character exclaimed at one point "this farting building sound like it's not so happy" or something.

What?

Game devs need to fucking learn that we are not immature 12 year olds. And you can make funny jokes and humorous reference's and be all relaxed without trying to cram 'fucking dick fart ass' into every sentence.

tl;dr: Gameplay is sound and enjoyable. Dialogue totally kills my mood for it though. Oh and the length of the demo isn't too promising either.

I thought at moments it went really bad, like his pointless use of words following a "dick-xxxxx" paradigm. When he said "dick-tits" for the 3rd time I was pretty irritated. However, overall I think it goes with the 'extreme/hardcore fun' theme of the game.

The demo's meant to be played repeatedly, so I wasn't bothered by the length too much. I thought the same as yourself in that there didn't seem to be too many combo possibilities- but seriously, play it again or watch some videos online- there is a lot you can do in the game combo-wise.

EDIT: I'm also pretty sure the woman just said something like "your fart might knock down this building, it doesnt sound happy". However i'm pretty sure she said "fucking" instead of "fart/farting" anyway. Who knows!

This run through actually provides some great tips... 12000 points too, in under 5 minutes.

And Dean, as you can see in this video, there are actually a number of environmental kills. Voodoo Doll, Shocker, Vertigo, I saw one just called Enviromental. Ding Dong and Tenderizer could also count as environmental kills.

Too bad at the end the guy misses French Revolution and gets Chain Reaction again, that would have jumped his score more.

Also she says to "stop farting around, the building sounds unhappy"
