Black Swan

Anyone else seen it yet?

I saw it last night with the gf. For about 5 years I've been totally immune to horror movies' effects- after seeing them I'm not worried about someone in the shower, my reflection, the dark, etc.

But after Black Swan I was freaking out. Granted, it subsided quickly; but that's the first time since I was a mid-teenager that a film has managed to work its way under my skin. I thought it was a pretty amazing achievement of a movie. I love Requiem for a Dream also, and have been meaning to see the Wrestler.

Yeah, I saw it with the gf as well. She had wanted to see it since she used to do ballet and we've been to a few live ballets in the city. I'd been wanting to see it because even Aronofsky's not-so-good movies have visually stunning moments (The Fountain), and the Wrestler blew me away.

I was amazed at how different the tone was. While the Wrestler was tender and poignant, Black Swan had absolutely none of that - it was just this dark, vicious film, and I loved it.

There were moments in that film that scared me more than any recent full-on horror film.

Damn awesome film, but not one that leaves you walking away feeling 'moved.' And that's fine - it's just not that sort of film.

See Requiem for a Dream? That leaves you feeling moved. In the worst possible way. Like moved to either hate society and tear it apart or kill yourself while you still have the chance. Black Swan was a really contained melting-pot of psychological damage and obsession, it was intense and scary and interesting, but yeah, not really moving (save the scene where she truly

becomes the Black Swan onstage. That moved me a bit.)

The only thing I didn't like about Black Swan was how relentless it was. I had that problem with Inception too; it's just constant scene-to-scene action, there's no breathing space at all, in a bad-editing kind of way rather than a story/plot kinda way. There are barely even scene-setting shots in Black Swan. But really this is a minor qualm, at lot of the time Aronofski made the transitions between scenes, locations, and themes really intelligently and interestingly.

This is top of my want to see list right now, closely followed by True Grit.

Luckily it's playing at my local arthouse cinema so as soon as I'm finished with coursework I'm gonna go see it. Plus I have 2 free tickets for the cinema. :bun-YES:

Yeah I can't wait for True Grit- also we saw Black Swan at an arthouse cinema! The place stank a bit of toilets (apparently they're getting refurbished), but still, I love that true-cinema quality you always get from seeing something at an local indie place.

Yeah Kenshi, Requiem for a Dream was the first Aronosky film I saw, about seven years ago.

It was the first time I sat through the credits of a film because I was just rooted there. That movie left me feeling like a hollowed out husk. So depressing, but so many gorgeous scenes and such amazing music.

I didn't get the same effect with Black Swan, and I have to agree - 'relentless' is the perfect term for that film.

It never allows you a moment to breathe.

Also, I just saw True Grit last weekend - excellent film, every bit as good it looked like it would be.
