Magicka

After this glowing review courtesy of the Cynical Brit, I am actually very much interested in trying this game out now. Will definitely try to pick it up in the near future.

Also, I like spells. Particularly ones that are so awesome that I sort of question why it isn't a standard for wizards already. No mana, no long-winded incantations, just chalk up some elements and let the spell work its magic. Awesome.

EDIT: It would appear that I posted in the wrong area. Would like to request a move to MultiPlat, please. :) Edited by Pirandello

Funny story about this game. Johnny pointed it out to me and I was all "No more new games, I've got enough of a backlog. Don't care what it is." Next day I'm waiting for Champions Online to go back online and I decide to buy Monday Night Combat. Purchase denied and when I checked, I was missing 20 cents or less on my card. So, 2 hours to kill, I download the Magicka demo after reading and RPS article. The system is very good fun and the game is chaotic enough in Single-player. I'm imagining MP is insane (still haven't tried it). And since it was cheaper than MNC, I ended up buying it.

I really think it's worth the 10 euro.

Okay, I got it to work. The game is actually pretty good despite being indie (and their first game as well).

The final boss battle was tricky at first, but I'll just leave one piece of advice: You can't hurt him when he's idle, but striking right when he's about to attack will work wonders.

Cool game. :)

Wow. Kindly sod off.

Because, obviously, every single indie game ever made becomes an instant success, much less reaching the top of Steam's top-selling list on the release day.

Of course. Indie games are the last bastion of gaming! If anyone dares to slander indie games in any way they must be a heretic/terrorist/nazi/anarchist!!!

Honestly though, Magicka is very much the same thing as Minecraft. A single gem in a sea of mediocre titles. Some are interesting, yes, but Magicka and Minecraft have something in common: they tried something different. And it worked.

Wow, I can't believe I get minused for that, but the original comment isn't. How ignorant are you people? Indie or major has no bearing on whether a game is good or not and I'm offended that anyone would even think that indie= automatically sucks and so when something is good it's an exception.. "A single gem in a sea of mediocre titles" can describe major industry titles as well. Why not reverse the statement and take an evangelical indie perspective with "The game is actually pretty good despite coming from a major studio."

Games are games. It doesn't matter if it's indie or not.

You're right, being indie doesn't automatically suck, but like I said, it doesn't mean it's instantly a great game. There are dozens of indie games out there, do you play them all? I certainly don't. Many of the indie games I see are some form of side scrolling masher, which may be fun, may be good, but ultimately doesn't bring anything new to the table. Then again, I guess indie devs have to start somewhere. It's good to build a portfolio and get some experience.

Anyways, back to the game. I still can't get my copy to work, it crashes JUST as you see the book, which I assume is the main menu. Checking at the Steampowered forums I see that several other people are having this problem as well. Guess I'll just wait until they patch it. Watching the Brit's video really makes me want to try chain lightning on goblins.

It's a comment echoed by the Cynical Brit in his video. It's an indie studio. An indie studio making their first game. You expect them to make promises about the game. You expect them to try to keep some of their promises, but end up having to cut corners in one way or another that would most likely have lowered the quality of the overall game, and possibly make it suck. The things the developers promised in Magicka are all there, and actually worked, and to a fantastic degree.

(and their first game as well).

Also, thank you for conveniently leaving that part out in your little rant.

On another note, does anyone know what the second element is for the Rain magick? I think it's Air, but I can't seem to get it to work.
