TheMightyEthan
Agreed about the free crossplay. I just played the Unit 13 demo. It was pretty cool, I'm considering getting the game.
danielpholt
Honestly, I found that game to be a massive disappointment. It's fun for an hour or so but the repetitive nature of the missions killed me. I've not played on it in months. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is selling for £20 on the PSN store right now. I'm mighty tempted to pick that up.
fuchikoma
I've been saying a lot how much I like Unit 13. I'm reeeeally sick of FPS/TPS games so it usually takes a lot to impress me, but this one won me over with its simple bite-sized missions and great moment to moment feel - it's very polished (suffers the usual third person grenade issues though...) To those who haven't played, imagine a stealth action game like MGS... but no meaningful plot beyond some motivation for each mission. Also, controls that are VASTLY more intuitive. Trying to get back into MGS2 lately, I'll take fire, run to take cover and automatically spin 180 when I do, so I can't return fire, so I stand up and get shot while turning around, then crouch down, try to take cover and go prone, then crawl around and stand up and get shot some more, etc... In Unit 13... I'd run up to cover and take cover, then peek around the edge and shoot guys. There are "direct action" missions, where you approach how you like - I like to sneak around and assassinate guys until hell breaks loose, then turn it into a tactical firefight. There are "elite" missions that are the same, but your health doesn't regenerate like it usually does - you just get one bar that lasts for one objective, and most missions have a few objectives. There are covert missions, where if you are spotted, you have to kill the spotter before anyone else is alerted - and they may be alarmed to see the spotter die... if an alarm goes off, you're done for. Then there are timed missions where you have to charge in like a maniac with guns blazing - I find that mode uncovers any and all flaws in the game, the layout, and so on. Hate that kind of mission... There are also video cameras, proximity mines and laser sensors on doors that may trigger alarms, bombs, or poison gas. I love using gas and bombs to take guys out when they come after me... This also plays into another neat but overlooked feature: It's kind of like "The Club" in that whenever you do a skilled action such as headshot, killing a guy who's unaware, killing a guy with a pistol, defusing a bomb, etc, it starts a little timer bar in the corner of the screen, and you can up your score multiplier by comboing these actions. Different operatives have different specialty skills, so for instance one may reward you more for long shots and another for stealthy play, etc. The main problems for me are... often I'll lose a whole mission from one of two things: There are grenade throws that no able-bodied human could miss, but sometimes I'll just bounce the grenade off a nearby wall or the box I'm hiding behind, and land it at my feet - dying instantly. (Oh, and everyone can throw grenades super far - it's not usually a problem, but sometimes it's interesting to see a grunt lob a nade 100 ft at you...) The other issue is that there are touch sensitive actions, and one of them is to leap over your current cover - which appears just to the left of the right stick, so sometimes I aim... and leap right into a hail of bullets automatically. Luckily, the missions are small and very replayable so it's not a huge loss. For me though, the basic nature of the missions (plant bombs, defuse bombs, assassinate VIPs, steal documents, sabotage machines, rescue hostages (untie them and you're good - no escorting)) is a huge selling point. In MGS 2 on Vita, I'm right where I am in the PS2 version... at the slide show... getting caught by some random quirk or another, every single time... forever... and there's no way to advance the game until that's cleared... I'm starting to think I'll never see the end of this game. If a mission in U13 stumps you - try another one. Ultimately, you just need the "stars" you get when you're graded 1-5 for beating each mission. If a mission is insufferable - move on. TheMightyEthan
Just added it to my Amazon wish list. Might pick it up this week if I get bored with the Vita games I already have.
danielpholt
I think we need to give some love to Guacamelee. That game is going to be awesome. The name alone almost guarantees it. Ish.
TheFlyingGerbil
has anyone played where is my heart? I've never heard of it. Not that I have a vita to play it on but I will one day.
TCP
I'm pretty sure it's a mini, which means you can play it on PS3/PSP.
Strangelove
I hope the PS3 gets some these really neat background colors later. Just the entire way your profile is set up on the Vita is so much better than on the PS3.
TCP
Agreed, a lot of things about the Vita OS is awesome. See: trophies.
fuchikoma
So has anyone noticed that issues surrounding terms of use for Google services are really sketchy on the Vita? I think I'll look up the terms of use for Google Maps... "You can read the terms of use for Google Maps." Are you trolling me? No - I came here to do that. It seems I can't, actually. *dig dig* Ah, here they are! ...but they're not hyperlinked, so I can't click on any of them. The Vita also doesn't have a clipboard, so I can't copy them... Yeah, that makes sense - I couldn't read them on the Vita because I'm totally not using a web browser RIGHT NOW. I guess I'd better copy it letter for letter into a real PC... or just blindly accept since they won't show me the terms on this device? Ah, forget it... I'll just install YouTube and watch some clips. Wait a second... why do you want permission to manage my account when I'm not even using the app??? How is that in any way cool? Maybe if I read the terms of use for YouTube, they'll explain why they need to use my account behind my back... Oh - I can't do that. It must be written in some kind of highly advanced experimental text that my Vita can't read! I give up... you guys are just too shady. deanb
Don't forget the PS3 interface did star on the PSP a couple years before PS3 came out, so we'll likely seem PS4 with some elements of the PSV interface. Though not al lcos one is built for the controller and the other for touch. Don't change what ain't broken (You here than Windows team?) Strangelove
People may hate the way the bubbles look on the Vita, but its ridiculously easier and faster to use than the XMB on the PSP. The XMB is ideal for use with a controller, but if you have a touchscreen, large icons will always be better.
fuchikoma
The look and feel on the Vita is fine by me. I just wish they'd allow a button-based fallback, at least for basic things like movie playback.

TCP
I've spent most of today playing Gravity Rush, it is awesome. Uncharted is great, same with Lumines.
Strangelove
I'll throw in super stardust delta and the MGS Collection, if you want to play mgs2 and 3 on the go. Also ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 if you don't have it already.
danielpholt
If you've not played Rayman i can't recommend that enough. Without a doubt its my favourite Vita game so far. Loved every (sometimes frustrating) minute of it.
pocoGRANDE
Considering buying this next week any suggestions for games I should get? everyone's suggestions so far have been great. i'd chime in and say Gravity Rush, Rayman: Origins, and Lumines would make an awesome vita collection. i have all of those, as well as FIFA, UMvC3, Escape Plan and Super Stardust. and honestly, all of those games are great too. Escape Plan and Stardust will give you a lot of bang for your buck. FIFA plays pretty much as well as the console version, same with UMvC3 (although i was a bit disappointed with either's lack of cross-play). but if i had to recommend one vita game it would be Gravity Rush. so damn good! TheMightyEthan
I can't stand the look of the Vita's dashboard, it's fucking retarded. I do like that stuff like trophies is an actual app though, rather than just being a nested list like in XMB. I do NOT like that after I click an icon I then have to click "start" on the page that pops up. It's irritating and pointless.
Thursday Next
I think the "Live Screen" thing needs a little work to be more useful. If instead of "Start" there were panels for "Continue", "New Game" or similar that would be handy. At the least they could give the option to auto-start when you select the icon. We've seen with Uncharted that it can be used to directly jump to a feature with the game, so again it could be useful say to choose a multiplayer or singleplayer campaign, or with something like MGS HD you could pick which title you want to play (unless they all load as different icons?). Strangelove
Whats so bad about it? Its just a bunch if icons, like the iPhone or Android phones. You press it and stuff opens. Did you want squares? As for the live area, it's not pointless. It has the manual, the updates, a link to go directly to the PS store for dlc, and the web search icons on it. If you scroll down it also has events that you and your friends have done in the same game. Theyre more easily accessible than opening the game and seeing you need to update it or going to the options menu to find the manual. Plus, you can leave 6 "Pages" open at any one time. The alternative would be an option to skip that screen the first time you open a new app or game, but I have a feeling that people would be going crazy looking for their manual or to see if there are any updates. BTW, now you and Jim Sterling have something in common, he also dislikes having to open a page to get into a game. Youre a monster now. Congratulations. I dont know who is going to have to break this to your family now. But I will pray for them. On another note, I have a big pet peeve for new adoptions of old things. Before something was called a "dashboard", It was a UI. Before it was a "campaign", it was single player or story mode. I hate that those things have been changed for some reason. TheMightyEthan
I just think the dash is ugly. I don't have a problem with having it be icons like my phone, because I agree that makes sense for a touch screen, but their specific icons and layout and such is ugly. I also don't like that there's no way to remove an icon without removing the app altogether. There should be some kind of menu so not everything has to be on the main screen(s). Where the page thing is especially pointless is for going to trophies or settings, which obviously don't have a manual or anything. I'm not opposed to the pages being there like if you get out of a game with the PS button, it's just that they're there before I launch the game that's irritating. Thursday Next
It's just a turn of phrase. Language changes over time. People used to promenade, now they take a walk. Besides, calling the single player campaign on most modern FPSs "story" mode is an insult to stories everywhere.
Strangelove
That makes sense. A lot of people don't like the bubbles(which look more like pins to me) or the way theyre arranged. You CAN switch them around though, if you didnt know. As for the icon thing, is there an example of that? Because as far as I know, on my iphone, on my previous android phone, and on my PS3 and PSP the icon IS the program/game. Are you talking about Windows maybe? on Windows you can have a program installed, but you can delete the icon from the "dashboard". But thats the only example I know of. I cant say it bothers me. For Windows it makes sense because there are a billion programs available, but the Vita probably has less than 100. I think folders are more likely to happen than a Windows-like thing. And I totally agree about SOME of the pointless Live areas. I guess they just wanted it to be uniform. Besides, calling the single player campaign on most modern FPSs "story" mode is an insult to stories everywhere. I have the opposite objection - calling a good story mode a FPS campaign is an insult to a good story mode. Outside of an FPS, Campaign just sounds stupid. People always wonder why other people hate stuff that doesn't affect them because they either dont use it or dont play it, but I guess this is an example. Its when things you DO use or play get changed because what's popular at the moment. Its very petty and childish, but it's just an example.
