TheFlyingGerbil
My PS3 doesn't charge the controller when it's off. In fact I hate charging the PS3 controller, it doesn't want to charge on any of my USB chargers, only on my PS3, and only when on. Which is rubbish because the cable is about a metre long so you can't play it when it's plugged in. I'll try leaving it in overnight and see if it charges when the PS3 updates as Strangelove suggests. Not happy that I have to leave all that junk on display, but it beats having to buy a solution. As for the Vita, I charge that over AC. I read that it charged via USB and was pretty happy about it. so when I bought it and found out it was a proprietary port on the actual vita and only USB on the other end I was pretty hacked off. That's another cable I need laying about and I really wish they'd made it more obvious which was the right way up. Not sure what it is with Sony and charging stuff but I really hope it's less of a mess on the PS4.
deanb
It's possible the Super Slim has powered USB ports even when off, but the original PS3 definitely doesn't, it was one of the main complaints folks had with the DS3 (compared to the way you can swap out AA's in a 360 controller midway through and be back to 100%). It was one of the "hey look how great the PS4 is" that the USB ports are powered while the PS4 itself is off.
Eleven
The Vita does charge on a USB 3.0 port. It won't say it's charging, but it is, slowly. I lost my AC adapter so I have to charge it on a PS4 when it's on standby, or on my PC while doing other stuff... like work, ugh..
Eleven
Anyone know if you can disable the Vita automatically trying to connect to the PS4 when you plug it through USB? When you plug it in, it says "Connecting to PS4", then fails anyway. I'd just like to have it charge, if possible...
Strangelove
I don't think there is. It's so annoying that I just stopped using my ps4 to charge it. It's just weird that there is absolutely no connectivity between the two like there is with the ps3. Remote play is the only hing they can do together. If not... well nothing wrong with wifi direct.
TheMightyEthan
I don't think so, based solely on how long it takes to copy videos to my flash drive.
TCP
The PS4 does have two USB 3.0 ports.
TheFlyingGerbil
TCP days he still has welcome park on his vita. I can't see it on mine so thought they'd done an update to remove it finally. Kind of scared to have a better look as I can still just about convince myself it's not there at the moment. TCP
Nah, it's there, TFG, it's there and it will NEVER leave us. It's basically the Wally of Vita.
deanb
Man I can't get over how childish the Vita system UI looks :/ It's a shame the guy who designed the XMB died in a horrible horrible accident.
TCP
The PSP/PS3 XMB remains my favourite UI for any console, ever. The bubbles are universally unpopular, I can't believe Sony hasn't done something about it. But they're also the company that took the functional and well organized PSN store on the PS3 and in 2012 changed it into the disaster that is now and haven't done anything about it since. TCP
Ok so I got a PlayStation TV, I tried it out a little at lunch time. First of all, as bad as the Vita's UI was on a touch screen, it's worse on a controller. That said, everything else is pretty great. I booted up FFX and it looks not bad on my 40" Samsung in the bedroom. I'd be interested in a direct comparison between it and the PS3 version. As for remote play, when I first tried it my PS4 was set to "connect directly" which is great if you're away from the home. I tried some Mordor and found things sluggish, impossible to counter, and significantly worse than Vita over wifi. Then, I turned direct connection off, and, well I'm confused because now the PS TV and the PS4 are.... connected..... directly.... to each other I DON'T FUCKING KNOW. But it worked FLAWLESSLY. I noticed the slightest bit of lag on Mordor, but nothing on Infamous. I'll try an FPS like Killzone when I get off work.
TheMightyEthan
Direct connect means it's making an ad hoc connection between the PS4's Wi-Fi adapter and the Via TV's, not actually using your home network.
TCP
That makes sense cause the little LAN logo in the top right of the PS TV's screen would disappear and get replaced with a wifi logo. Either way, not the way to do it unless your PS TV and PS4 are in the same room but, what would the point of that be?
TheMightyEthan
I guess for the two people who have a Vita and a PS4 but no wifi network?
TCP
Those two people are really important, unlike all the hundreds of thousands of people wanting DLNA support.
TheMightyEthan
DNLA competes with pay services Sony offers.
Faiblesse Des Sens
That was true on the PS3 as well. They'll cave eventually.
Eleven
Isn't the ad-hoc connection using something like WiFi direct? So in theory it should be better?
TheMightyEthan
But it's way more prone to interference than a wired connection, and the router adds so little latency that in practice unless your house is a Faraday cage, or your Vita TV and PS4 are within a few feet of each other (which would defeat the purpose), you're better off with a wired connection.
TheMightyEthan
Does anyone know if there's a way to use touchpad functionality with a DS3 when remote playing a PS4 game via a PSTV? I'd prefer not to have to resync my DS4 every time I want to use the PSTV, but not having the touchpad button makes things difficult. TCP
Negative. I got myself a second DS4, which I wanted to grab anyways due to the DS4's crappy battery life, I keep one synced to the PS4 and one to the PS TV unless one dies, which doesn't happen often but it's nice knowing I have a backup. TheMightyEthan
Dangit. I use my PS4 on a computer monitor so I'm all of 3 feet away from it, so for me it's no problem to play with it plugged in.
