TheFlyingGerbil
Sony's moved over to dual SD/MS for its camereas and camcorders - I wouldn't be surprised if this had an SD slot and a MS slot. Also, there is space on the game cards for game DLC/patches, so it would only be entirely downloaded games on your own memory cards.
Thursday Next
The Xperia Play has dropped Memory Stick in favour of MicroSD. Don't see why NGP wouldn't do the same.
Yantelope
Yeah, and considering you can buy a 32GB SD card for $50 and a 16GB SD for around $20 I'm not to worried about having enough storage for downloadable content. I do however think that the loss of VRAM is a big deal. VRAM can be a big factor in limiting what developers can do with their games. CorgiShinobi
Speaking of (obsolete) Sony storage formats, I saw a MiniDisc the other day. Â Only other time I've seen a MiniDisc was a kid in high school (circa 2005) had an old MD audio player instead of an MP3 player.
TCP
I remember buying a minidisc player in 2003ish, my friend tried convincing me that mp3 players were the future of music. I wish I had listened. What a stepbackwards that was.
Faiblesse Des Sens
How was it a step backwards? Minidiscs supported compressed file formats. At the time minidiscs were a better value than MP3 players, too.
DarkMalice
Fresh off the GAF Â Â What's everyone think of PSV or PSVita?
CorgiShinobi
I kinda like the idea of a "PSV," but Vita? The use of Vita I imagine is "Life" and so we have a PS "Life." Kinda goes along with how Sony's products are suppose to be integrated with one's daily routine. Â It's a stretch, but I see Vista and Viva Pinata spoofs on the horizon. Yantelope
Yeah, Vista was the first thing I thought of too. Why would anyone want to be associated with that marketing nightmare?
Strangelove
Goddammit, its such a sexy looking system.
Thursday Next
Yeah, seeing the Vita / Vista confusion. Don't much care what it's called to be honest, I don't find Vita offensive but it's not setting my world on fire. I'd have been as happy with "PSP2". Â This is a deeply sexy system though. Day one purchase.
Yantelope
I'm just so confused by these naming things. I don't know what Vita is supposed to convey.
toxicitizen
I'm not crazy about the name Vita but it sounds much more normal to me than "Nintendo Wii" originally did, so I'm sure I'll get used to it in no time. Â I still don't get why they didn't just call it the PSP2, though.
Yantelope
Yeah, I mean, Playstation makes sense. A station at which you play games. Even Xbox was derived from DirectX box. I don't understand the arbitrary words like Vita and Wii. At least Genesis and Dreamcast were real words.
deanb
I'd imagine the stigma of the PS Portable is what is driving them from the PS Portable 2 to the PS Vita. Vita is as far as I know "life". So there's that.
toxicitizen
Yeah, but wasn't the PSP kinda huge in Japan? I dunno, I just never considered to be that huge of a failure. At least not to the point of expecting them to distance themselves from the PSP name.
deanb
It's not a failure by any definition of the word. It's a very popular console. It just gained a stigma. It's software library was a bit underwhelming n the piracy plagued it quite a bit. So it's more for the devs I think they want to go "hey it's a new console. New stuff. Don't think of it like the PSP...please"
CorgiShinobi
With the exception of the PlayStation home console line, I would personally prefer it if The Big Three named their consoles rather than numbered them. Â I would let out a sigh of unimaginable frustration if the next Nintendo console was called "Wii 2" or if if Microsoft thought they could run with 'Xbox 720." Yantelope
Yeah, I was sad when they called it the PS2. It was the first time they started that and I used to get excited to hear the names of the new consoles. Something about numbering them makes them seem less exciting and new. Â I would let out a sigh of unimaginable frustration if the next Nintendo console was called "Wii 2" or if if Microsoft thought they could run with 'Xbox 720." I like the Playstation home console line, as well. Thank god they're (hopefully) not naming the NGP the 'PSP2'. The Xbox 720 would sound pretty ridiculous, but I think they'll name it something else, albeit with the 'Xbox' brand. Ninty's never gone with a numbered console before, so they wouldn't start now. Closest they've ever come was Famicom/Nintendo and Super Famicom/Super Nintendo. I don't think there's too much to worry about.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Yeah, but wasn't the PSP kinda huge in Japan? I dunno, I just never considered to be that huge of a failure. At least not to the point of expecting them to distance themselves from the PSP name. Â It's been ages since I checked but there's been at least 60 million PSPs sold. Not even close to a failure. Thursday Next
Made up words like "Wii" are easier to get trademark protection for. Â Same goes for words unconnected to the product description like "Vita" and "Dreamcast". Â Descriptive terms like "Dual Screen" are hard (if not impossible) to protect, at least initially, in time they can earn enough brand equity to be protectable in their own right, which means that they always, or at least in their formative years have to be accompanied by a brand name like "Nintendo". Â A name like "Vita" could imply that Sony want to be able to call it the Vitaâ„¢ without having to use the whole name "PlayStation Vita" or trying to establish brand equity in both "PSV" and "PlayStation Vita" at the same time. Â That said, they could just like the name.
Faiblesse Des Sens
The more I hear it the more I like it. Well more so, the more I'm used to it. Doesn't seem weird anymore.
Thursday Next
I like the name "Vita" on its own. Think "PlayStation Vita" is a bit of a mouthful and "PSV" just reminds me of the Dutch(?) football team PSV Eindhoven.
Faiblesse Des Sens
"Playstation Portable" was more of a mouthful IMO.
