Kovach_
£229/279... wow. UK got fucked over more then € guys. GAME are taking pre-orders already? I was hoping Amazon would be a bit quicker off the bat and I would reserve there. There's Vita on Amazon as well. Thursday Next
I just went through Game because of the loyalty points. I get staff discount there too on account of working for a publisher. Been trying my damnedest to find out about the 3G Vita in the UK, but no-one's saying anything.
Pirandello
The Vita looks pretty awesome. As a first-time modern-generation handheld buyer, would it be best to wait a bit until they release a new version before buying after launch? I've often heard that the first-generation devices usually come with problems.
Yantelope
There was a 2 year gap between the original DS and PSP and their lite versions. If you want to wait 2 years you can but I'm not going to. If the new one is really much improved you can usually trade up for not too much money. CorgiShinobi
I feel like, as far as my experience has gone, I usually pick one handheld to dive into first. My first, and only, PSP was the 2000 series (the one right after the original), whereas I got the original DS, and after that I saved up for a DS Lite. Yantelope
I gotta say that using proprietary storage makes me a little disconcerted. I wonder if it has anything to do with piracy. Also, I might hold off on getting a PSV if it's going to cost me $100 to get a 16GB storage card with it. http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/14/sony-playstation-vitas-removable-memory-looks-like-an-sd-card/
WTF
I gotta say that using proprietary storage makes me a little disconcerted. I wonder if it has anything to do with piracy. Also, I might hold off on getting a PSV if it's going to cost me $100 to get a 16GB storage card with it. http://www.engadget. ...ike-an-sd-card/ I don't think memory cards will cost as much - probably sell for a bit more than cost since it's not going to be used for any other device initially (maybe cameras later). They're going to make a pretty good markup via the digital store (yes a lot of people do buy games digitally these days and in fact many people actually bought infamous 2 via the store even though the digital version is £10 cheaper. There's also the fact that God of War: Ghost of Sparta must have sold 500k copies by Feb-March in Pal territories despite not doing so much at retail since it was released as a Platinum (greatest hits) title in April. That must mean it sold well digitally). I think the memory cards will be reasonable. However I do believe that despite them taking a loss on hardware they are going to be really profitable on software. Comments like development costs mirror PSP dev costs right now pretty much help realise that games will definitely make the Vita business profitable. Hirai's statements about 'platform' pretty much give us an idea of how they work these days. Whatever hits they take with hardware will be absorbed by the software. I'm not expecting memory cards to be dirt cheap but I think we could expect 16GB for £40ish easily. (I imagine it being cheaper than CF cards which usually go for £50-60s)
Saturnine Tenshi
I haven't read(and don't plan to) this entire thread. I'm certain I'll buy the Vita, though. The list of supporting companies is impressive, and I've already seen a couple enchanting titles — Gravity and Dragon's Crown thus far. And with the inevitable salvo of VNs, I think it'll fare well enough.

Saturnine Tenshi
That'd be pretty lame if I left the house regularly.
Mister Jack
I heard from a friend that Verizon was planning to kill off their unlimited data plans in the near future, so if that's true than using them was never really an option. TheRevanchist
I do leave the house all of the time, and I get crazy dropped calls with AT+T right now. To me, this makes the Vita just a little less pretty and a little more ordinary. The most fancy feature for me was the portability. But that's okay. I have my PSP 3000. I won't be alone.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I don't know... 3G isn't a big draw to me personally. Considering wi-fi is absolutely everywhere these days and only grows more I really don't see the big deal with it. I think the same way when comparing wifi e-readers to 3G ones. CorgiShinobi
Wi-Fi is growing bigger, but not every public place has open/free Wi-Fi. Sure you've got McDonald's and airports, but 3G right now has that "anywhere" presence. Not to say it literally is everywhere, but you're probably more likely to want 3G if you have the urge to be online while outside Wi-Fi business locations. Faiblesse Des Sens
It's also just a game system and not a smartphone. I see less online usage with it than I do with the typical device people use 3G for.
deanb
I'd just go with Wi-Fi because it'll more than likely be much faster. I wouldn't really want to do anything but Turn-based shit with 3G. Also downloading games could be a bit of an bother too. My biggest Android app is Angry Birds at 14MB. Only thing on the PSP (never mind Vita) comes close to that are some of the Minis, though they tend to hover around 30-50MB area. Regular PSP games in the 300MB-1.5GB area. Anyone want to get that on a 3G connection? There might be a few nice apps that could use the 3G, but most of those I can get on my Phone. So I'm not really seeing much use for the 3G model myself. Most of the games are too big to download on the go and 3G isn't snappy enough for multi-player.
CorgiShinobi
Yeah, I would still stick with the Wi-Fi model. I normally don't download anything unless I'm home. Getting my free copy of ModNation Racers on PSP took two hours.

Yantelope
Vita Ram is confirmed as 512MB. Not cut to 256. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-08-17-vita-ram-confirmed-as-512mb

Yantelope
who knows. Isn't it usually on these mobile chipsets? If it's anything like an iPhone 4 it'll be a system on a chip.
Thursday Next
According to 1up "Vita sports 512MB of RAM along with 128MB of dedicated VRAM." So does that mean it has like 640MB of RAM or will 128 of the RAMs be taken from the 512 RAMs? I like when things have lots of MB's it makes me think they will do stuff good. http://www.1up.com/news/vita-ram-wasnt-downgraded-reach-24999-price
deanb
It does say "dedicated" which means it has 640MB. Shared is when it takes a cut from system RAM. PS3 has dedicated 256MB VRAM, 360 has 512MB shared (so it scales up n down a bit)
