Yantelope
I love matchmaking. It keeps people from all camping the crappy maps and turning the odds in their favor. It also ensures that you're gonna get in a match that's somewhat close to your skill range. The other great thing about matchmaking is you don't have to sort through 5000 servers all running 24/7 DE_DUST!
Cyber Rat
Depends on the game I guess. If it's a massive game a la CS or TF2 or Battlefield, then matchmaking is cool. If it's 1-4 on 1-4 games (fightning or L4D), then I don't like it because I always end up with ragequitters or pr0 gamers who tell me I suck and should go play Pong. TheMightyEthan
I added a poll. I prefer matchmaking. It's just so much more convenient. I actually really like how Starcraft II does it: it's matchmade, but if you want to play a custom gametype those are all listed in a gametype browser, so you hit "join game", pick the type you want, and it throws you in a game. I think it's a good combination of the advantages of servers combined with the advantages of matchmaking.
TheForgetfulBrain
I can't really vote on this, because I think it really depends on the game. For the mainstream competitive games like Halo or MW, particularly in ranked mode, I think matchmaking is a must and makes a whole lot of sense. For games like TF2 or any other PC game that has a lot of custom content and is based off server communities, it would be a death knell. Not in all cases, but I think typically matchmaking is better suited to consoles, hosted servers to PC. Yantelope
I don't think that's a great general rule. I'd probably still play CS Source if it had matchmaking but as it is I hate trying to find a good server.
NeoStarr
I've always had a thing against servers. I like the multiplayer experience to be consistent and accessible. It's too hard to find vanilla games with servers, they're always running some kind of mod or sound pack, or not rotating maps. When you do find a server you like, you're often forced to play with a lot of the same people who frequent that server and you don't see as much variety in the strategies they use. Plus, shit tends to get clique-y on servers like that, and all of a sudden the 'no swearing' rule only applies to you, or everyone follows suit when some n00b accuses you of cheating, that kind of thing. deanb
I dislike Matchmaking when it's P2P based, but with dedicated it's cool. It does kind of depend on the game. Though I'd much rather browse through a list of servers and find an empty one and hop on and play, than wait about for however long as the matchmaking service tries to find folks who are also playing the same time as me. Matchmaking works well with smaller things like RTS, L4D etc. Servers also mean a common ground to join up on as groups. No need to wait on a host or for everyone to turn up if we want to play TF2. docsfox
Matchmaking should be an OPTION, not something forced down my throat. I prefer servers and the communities that spawn around them. Most of my online friends come from communities formed around game servers. I like being able to go to a server where there are people playing already. I like people joining and leaving the game and it not forcing me to find or start a new game. I like not having to wait to start playing. I like being able to switch maps without having to go to a lobby and re-ready up. I like matchmaking on games with a reletively few number of players like Starcraft and L4D where it's best or necessary to be in game from start until finish though. Pirandello
Gonna have to go with servers on this one. All my experiences with matchmaking have been wholly negative. It never puts you with the right people.
Enervation
Matchmaking is nice for me, since I am pretty noob when it comes to games that have matchmaking, but I also enjoy servers due to a "set" population, and the opportunity to use modded maps and game modes (in certain games). It's nice to be "one of the usuals."
Johnny
In truth, it depends on the game, but if I have to pick one, give me a goddamned server list. Honestly I feel most games would do well with supporting both options. I can't imagine StarCraft 2 without matchmaking, nor can I imagine it without custom games. TheMightyEthan
I will agree with calls that games should support both.
