Johnny
The video speaks for itself. My own thoughts on the subject: they are very good at providing the service their name advertises, but pretty much AWFUL at everything else they do. Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
I hate Michael Pachter. He makes all sorts of baseless hypothetical statements that never come true.
toxicitizen
Yeah Pachter's a giant tool who either states the obvious or completely ignorant bullshit, but I love GT's reviews. They haven't let me down so far. Edited February 1, 2011 by FLD
Johnny
Really? I find them to be full of complaints about anything too far out there, inconsistent, filled with factual errors and largely obsessed with trying to review every game as if it aspired to the same throne "king of mainstream blockbusters". SixTwoSixFour
When I first started watching their reviews, I enjoyed them for the fact that since it was video, they actually DEMONSTRATED what they were talking about- if they said something was bad, they showed it to you. If they said something was good, they showed it to you. Then there were quite a few noticeable examples of GT just straight out lying- doing console comparison videos of multiplat games and intentionally tweaking settings on one console or the other to make it look worse (sometimes even showing the same console side by side and claiming that one is PS3 and one is 360 just to start flame wars and get hits). So yeah, it's a useful site, but their editorial staff is total scum.
Johnny
The problem with their usage of video is that sometimes they use the video to make a problem seem much bigger/more usual than it really is.
Mister Jack
I like GT's reviews...I mean look at kotaku's by comparison Edited February 1, 2011 by Mister Jack
Johnny
Well that was short lived. The video has been taken down.
Pirandello
I only go to GT to actually, you know, watch game trailers. The occasional review is also good. I find their review format quite spiffy as they usually like to explain-and-show at the same time.
deanb
I visit to watch trailers and mostly EpicBattleAxe (which technically I could watch on their own site a day or two earlier, but I prefer GT's player) The review's are worth watching cos they have footage to go with what they're saying (something we're going to try with PXOD, just getting capture stuff set up is a pain), the scores, like most game reviews, are ignorable. Invisible Walls and Bonus Round are entirely skippable unless, especially IW, you feel like having a rage day. Escapist is the place to go for original VG video content. CorgiShinobi
I like their reviews, very much so. Ignore the score and listen to what they say, and if the reviews seem to "complain," welcome to reviews. Besides, some of the user videos and ScrewAttack (AVGN too) make it worth a daily visit. My only real complaint is that their video reviews tend to have SPOILERS!
TheForgetfulBrain
When I first started watching their reviews, I enjoyed them for the fact that since it was video, they actually DEMONSTRATED what they were talking about- if they said something was bad, they showed it to you. If they said something was good, they showed it to you. That's what I like about GT. I guess you can get that with IGN too. I dunno. Once you dig into the community of any game site, it seems like you'll find people unhappy with the editors. I don't think I know of any universally loved gaming site/blog/magazine. LaunchOctopus
GT has had shitloads of criticism for as long as I can remember (mostly from its huge community of trolls) and most of it is spot on, the actual content and analysis in the reviews rarely matches the quality of the video editing, I haven't found anywhere else that gets the balance right in terms of video content as well as them. TheMightyEthan
I agree with the statement that their reviews have never let me down. There have been plenty of times that they liked a game and I didn't, or they didn't like a game and I did, but the review always gives me enough information to figure out what I will think of the game, regardless of what they think. Yantelope
I go there a lot to watch screwattack videos and to watch their reviews. I think finding good reviews is all about finding someone you agree with and then just trusting their opinions. I generally agree with GT's opinions so I go there for my reviews. It's also great because you get to see a ton of gameplay and examples of what they're talking about and I feel like that helps me understand the flavor of the game before I buy it. Also I met Stuttering Craig at his game store once. That was kind of cool finding out that some people you see on the internet really exist. Yantelope
Silly Yante, internet people don't really exist. I actually did some snooping and was able to locate Screwattack's secret headquarters. I've been very tempted to go bust in on them and demand to be in a video but I'm pretty sure they'd just kick me in the nards.
「Advent Chaos」
Like mostly everybody else, I go to GT for the trailers, watch a review or two and some of ScrewAttack Angry VideoGame Nerd videos. As far as the community goes, it's a bunch of trolls and extreme fanboys and GT sometimes helps fuel their own wars (Console comparisons and whatnot). I think I'm the only one who likes Pachter, I don't hold what he says to be completely true or rational, if anything I just see it as another point of view. Who amongst us hasn't made baseless statement, simply relying on our own limited reasoning? I sure have, and it's not all bad. Claiming you're right and everyone else wrong without anything to back it up, well that's just wrong and obnoxious. GT reviews are quit enjoyable, their scoring usually seems to be completely opposite to what/how they talked about the game which throws me off sometimes. Again, sometimes they won't like a game or give it a low score, but I may like it a lot. Their video players usually give me a headache though. Yantelope
Yeah, the review score matters less than the information in the review with GT.
deanb
My beef with Pachter would be that the guy is paid to know about games, and he's so often off base on even the most basic things. Also he seems a bit too into Activision if you ask me. I get that he's more a man for the publishers and less so for the gamers, but even then the info he gives you have to wonder how he's still in a job. Also I can only see GT hiring him on becuase he so frequently makes comments that are pro-publisher n anti-gamer/consumer that it leads to great flame war/raging stuff that drives up hits. Johnny
Off base on what? I remember him talking about how SC2 was gonna have a subscription fee for people who didn't own World of Warcraft a few weeks before StarCraft 2's launch, for example. SixTwoSixFour
Pacter talks out of his ass with alarming frequency. My theory is that GT just keeps him around because they like the idea of having a pet analyst, even if the reality isn't so great.
Johnny
My theory is that most people employed on GT (as everyone who ever listens to Invisible Walls would know) is roughly as full of shit as Pachter and therefore they can't see the difference.
