deanb
Yeah I don't really get why Japanese companies seem to have such difficulty with PC, especially in this day and age. FFXIV came out pretty damn poop, as has this. Last Remant, nice game but terrible fps for what it is. Way back in the FFVII days, sure they can suck a bit, but now? Also I kinda figured the petition and clamour for a release would have shown that the fans cared for the game coming to PC, just a shame that folks have to remember to add stipulations of "isn't almost directly ported across from console" "isn't messed up with GFWL" and so on. Also don't Namco Bandia have an PC teams? (oh wait I looked. Dark Souls would represent one third of their PC output.)
Maritan
Pre-ordered a couple of days ago, because I can't play online on my banned x360. Oh boy, am I going to be mad while playing this on PC. Well, despite this, I was going to buy it. Emphasis on was: Hoorah for GFWL!! It's not GFWL-related. Steam blocks a lot of games in various regions for some reason(publishers, of course).
deanb
But GFWL doesn't work in Serbia, so most likely any country that's not supported by GFWL is automatically removed off the list of countries that Dark Souls is available for on Steam. Maritan
It is GFWL-related. Games that are region-banned on Steam include GFWL games after a certain date and most MMOs. Dark Souls falls in the GFWL category. That is odd. Steam always blocks many games here in Russia(hello, whole Bethesda catalog!), but even when GFWL wasn't supported here I bought DoW2 without any problems. What about Arkham City? Cyber Rat
Arkham City is also region-blocked. I only have it because I won the key on a giveaway.
excel_excel
So anyone preordered this? The preload has started finally on Steam. and it unlocks tonight at midnight GMT. Here's some supposed screenshots of what it actually looks like at 1080p. Edited August 23, 2012 by excel_excel
Faiblesse Des Sens
I saw some dude's thread on Reddit talking about how it looks a tiny bit better than the console versions and the framerate is much more stable.
excel_excel
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=488088&page=14 SOMEONE HAS ALREADY UNLOCKED THE RESOLUTION LOCK! Heres it at a proper 1080p res with no AA or anything just rendered at 1080p
Faiblesse Des Sens
Hmm... Did it lost that weird oily filtered look by doing that? It seems like it.
Maritan
Some guy made a resolution mod. Just few hours after release. Fucking japs can't do anything right. Oh well, preloading... excel_excel
http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?p=92 There's the download for the Resolution fix. Here's a great comparison shot. Unmodded Modded
TheMightyEthan
Oh my god, that's like night and day. *Edit* - If it was that easy, why didn't the devs just do it themselves? Maritan
Looks quite good with that fix(just launched it on my 360 to compare), but text messages don't appear correctly(He promised to look into this problem). Finally managed to configure my gamepad. Part of true PC experience, I guess. There's a special slang term in Russia for all these actions - "dances with tambourine" Oh my god, that's like night and day. *Edit* - If it was that easy, why didn't the devs just do it themselves? Incompetence? Edited August 24, 2012 by Maritan
Cyber Rat
Well, if GFWL ever decides my money is good or I move out of Serbia, I'll look into getting this. Or just buy the PS3 version when/if I get a PS3.

Incompetence? In the non-insulting way, yes, they are incompetent. This is their first PC port. The other From Software game that was on PC wasn't ported by them. Hopefully they learn some lessons and continue to port to PC in the future. Or just outsource it again (though I think that was Bamco's doing.) excel_excel
So, now some magicians have made a 60FPS mod for the PC port. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=AxrPy0TiNjU there's a youtube vid but unfortunately youtube vids can't be 60 FPS, so there's a download link of the video at 60 FPS. http://www.mediafire.com/?vhnhwz3lhq8p9aw It looks incredible, so much more smoother then the game currently looks. TheMightyEthan
Interesting that it looks like the animations are high-quality enough to also be running at 60 fps. When I played Darksiders 2 even though it was running at 60 fps the animations were only at 30 fps; the effect was... interesting.
Maritan
Played a little with it, looks amazing. With all those fixes Dark Souls actually looks better than most of the games this year.
excel_excel
The textures look absolutely astounding at times with the resolution fix. Look at the detail on the wall in this shot. Look at how good even the little details, like the bricks around the candle, so much fine detail. and this one. Look at how sharp those textures look. At the console resolution so much of this detail just seems to be lost.
Mercurial
Boss is swinging at me I better focus on how nice the floor looks! Edited September 20, 2012 by Dr.Krieger
Mal
Watching it, the game feels so different. I haven't played Dark Souls yet by the way however, watching Demon Souls and Dark Souls streams, they both feel very similar. 60fps broke that feeling. MasterDex
So I've been having a conversation with Johnny on Facebook about Dark Souls. Specifically, on the quality of the co-op implementation. Here's the transcript. Which side do ye fall on? Am I alone in my opinion? Johnny: I feel like Dark Souls is one of the few games that don't treat the player like an idiot Me: Agreed, but it also does some things wrong Like making co-op a bitch to organise and having only one way to get arrows in the early game - and making that one way disappear by allowing the merchant to be killed. Johnny: You're not supposed to organize co-op with your friends that's precisely why it is like it is Me: People like co-op exactly because they get to play with their friends. Given the choice, people would rather play only with friends rather than strangers. Making that difficult works against the game, regardless of the reasoning behind it. Johnny: Making organized co-op impossible works in the game's favor by enhancing the feel and atmosphere you are on your own always that is the point of the game Co-op would run completely counter to its basic design Me: So why include it in the first place? Johnny:Because it's not co-op. You can summon other players to your world, but you're not really allies. Those guys can turn on you, invade your world, kill you Me: I'm pretty sure it was sold as co-op. Johnny:It was not. Me: Back of the box - Innovative online features: Leave messages, view ddeath of slain players, COOPERATE and invade other players! Page 12 of the manual - Co-Op In co-op, up to three players can play together. The summoner is called the host and the summoned are the clients. Co-op goal Players TEAM UP to defeat the area boss. Co-op ends if the area boss is defeated, if all the clients are defeated, of if the host is defeated. If the area boss is defeated, then the clients receive Humanity as a reward. So yeah, it was sold as co-op. Edited October 30, 2012 by MasterDex
Waldorf and Statler
I agree with both of you. The whole point of the game was difficulty and a sense of being alone, but if they were gonna include co-op you might as well let friends play together even if communication besides actions is impossible. Invading players are a complete different thing from co-op
