toxicitizen
These are the alleged leaked settings. Seems reasonable. Whatever's missing or limited will likely be tweaked by modders, I expect. And judging from a tweet by Brad from GiantBomb, it looks like the embargo on coverage lifts tomorrow. Their Quick Look is going live tomorrow morning. Mal
http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-dark-souls-ii-pc/2300-8726/ Youtube Solid port. Indeed the lighting is not there but solid 60 fps, high resolution textures and quick loading times. So pretty much none of the bullshit that was the DS1 port. Honestly people will be reaching for a major complaint with the lighting. Edit: Actually, go to 16:30 and compare it with the earlier lighting. That is really weird. The torch/lantern projected lighting at 16:30 but not the one earlier. Maybe it is in there in part. Mr. GOH!
I want to preorder DS2 PC even though I will have zero time to play it until late May.
toxicitizen
PC Gamer gave Durante (DSfix guy) access to the PC version and got him to write a report on it. http://www.pcgamer.com/uk/2014/04/17/dark-souls-2-pc-port-mod-god-durantes-verdict/ Looks to be pretty damn solid, his verdict is quite positive. Also looks like he has a follow-up piece coming up on how to tweak the game to get the most out of it.
toxicitizen
Welp, 6 hours and many deaths into it, the game is pretty damn great. That being said, so far I am NOT a fan of the changes to health and healing. Reducing your max health with every death is way too punishing, imho. It sucked in Demon's Souls and it sucks again here. It just makes death more frustrating and I end up feeling like I'm wasting my human effigies. Also, I miss the old Estus Flask. I run out of life gems way too fast and upgrading the flask a single charge at a time takes forever. The old one was kind of overpowered after a while, though. So it's not like I don't see why it was changed. But still, I miss my +7 Estus Flask with 20 charges. I miss it so much.
Mr. GOH!
I played about 45 minutes and really think it looks and plays well. It's more Dark Souls, so I am a happy camper!
Little Pirate
So I had a thief going as my starter and I decided I wasn't quite getting the feel of it right. So I switched to a pyromancer. Roommate told me to try and kill the asylum demon on its first encounter to get some kind of sword. I didn't think my first boss kill was going to be repeatedly punching a blobby demon in the butthole over and over and over. And the jiggle animations are too accurate on this thing. Guh. Waldorf and Statler
Good thing you're starting DS1, fantastic game. Personally I would have started with DS2 since the community is strong so there's a lot of chances for co-op and PvP while DS1 has died down quite a bit due to Games for windows live and shit. Assuming you're playing PC of course.
toxicitizen
82 hours later, completed up to NG++ and 100% achievement completion. I think I can finally play something else now. I... I'm free!
Waldorf and Statler
I haven't even completed NG, because I keep farming for souls. But when each sin is costing me 167k and I cannot make those kind of souls easily, that's a hint to GTFO and finish and go to NG+
toxicitizen
1) How are you SL 167 and still in NG?!? You must be so overpowered lol. 2) How are you getting so much sin that you need to farm to get rid of it? Killing NPCs? 3) Not sure if that's what you meant but if you were hoping to get rid of it by going to NG+, I hate to break this to you but, unlike the original, sin doesn't reset. It carries over. Waldorf and Statler
1. All of the co-op baby. I love helping others and the community is there. 2. I've killed 2 NPC's. One because I needed a certain item they drop for my faith build, and doing all of the shit I need to do to get it was too much trouble. The other because there were literally a thousand signs telling me "don't pull this lever" but curiosity killed the Wally and I had to pay the price. Sins go up by soul level. So each NPC killed seems to be my soul level x1000. 3. No I'm far enough I have a bonfire to get me to the dude that pardons sins. But I'd need to farm souls with co-op or something before going to NG+ so I don't carry over with sins and get constantly invaded by say blue bros. toxicitizen
I am also guilty of pulling that lever the first time. Then again in NG+, because I'm a fucking idiot and misunderstood how that specific NPC worked. So I essentially screwed myself out of a couple spells I needed to get from him until the next NG cycle, which pissed me off. I killed him that time because I couldn't be bothered to deal with the, um, "consequences" again but I've yet to be invaded by any bluebros so I think my sin level is still fairly low. I haven't bothered paying it off. I think only the price depends on your soul level and at this point it would cost me like 250K per sin point, so fuck that lol. edit: Actually, I think I remember reading somewhere that killing that specific NPC after you pulled the lever doesn't count towards sin. I wonder where I got mine, then, because that asshole in the chapel clearly implies that I've got some. Maybe my time as a Bellbro? If that NPC doesn't net you sin, then I have no fucking clue what could have gotten me sin because literally an hour before I had paid off the sin of the other dude I had killed. So it had to have been that because the only other thing I did was be a Bell Bro, and that's a covenant. So if it counts as a sin to be automatically sent to defend the bell tower, that'd be bullshit. Also lag is taking away some of the fun in PvP. toxicitizen
Well, what's your sin level? Unless it's sinner or wretch, then I don't think you need to worry about paying it off yet. It should still be "-" while you only have 0-9 points of sin, and it seems there's no clear penalties at that point. According to the wiki, killing NPCs = 1 sin point and so does invading and killing a player with the cracked red eye orb. Can't remember where I read about Navlaan not counting, though. Nothing else is mentioned. And it seems having the option to pay the guy isn't a reliable way to check your sin level, so maybe he's been scamming you? lol I'm reading some conflicting info online so I guess it hasn't been completely figured out yet... Waldorf and Statler
Just beat the game. I don't think I'll be doing much besides PvP in NG+ don't feel like beating the game again.
toxicitizen
Not one but three DLCs announced for Dark Souls II. Season pass is already live on Steam for 25$. I'm not going to lie, this kind of bothers me a little. Not that there is DLC at all but that they blatantly lied about its existence. Not so long ago, someone from From completely dismissed the mere suggestion of DLC when asked about it. This is coming out pretty soon, so clearly it's been in development for some time. I don't know, just kinda makes me want to not pay full price for it out of principle. I'm already done with the game and moved on anyway, so I guess I'll just wait until they've all come out and get it on sale.
TheMightyEthan
Japanese companies always lie, it's just what they do, rather than the "no comment" our equivocation you get from Western companies.
Mal
There is quite a bit of bitching going on about this. Part of it is related to what FLD said. Some of it is due to the same arguments that DLCs usually have like cut content, milking the franchise and all that fun stuff.
toxicitizen
Yeah, I think not just lying but lying about something like DLC, which can be a really touchy subject, was downright stupid of them. It's one thing to lie about "Yeah, no, we're totally not showing that rumored game at E3 next week " but when you say something along the lines of "No, we're not planning DLC. We're focused on giving you a complete package" then you announce a bunch of DLC a few weeks later, it just makes you look bad. TheMightyEthan
I thought the same thing when Atlus said they weren't planning to bring Catherine to the US, three weeks before they announced Catherine was coming to the US in two months. It actually made me consider not buying the game, just cause it irritated me so much (I have a thing about people lying). FFS, just say "We don't comment on rumors or speculation." and leave it at that. It's just a culture difference, Japanese culture doesn't frown upon lies in the same way that Western culture does. Which is not to say Western companies don't try to deceive people, they just don't tell bald-faced lies straight to your face as frequently, especially about trivial things like whether they're going to release something.
toxicitizen
Oh yeah, I remember the Catherine one. What makes it even more baffling is that they sent a tease through their newsletter very soon after. Like, less than a week later, I think. I just can't comprehend what they could possibly have gained from that one. They knew their fans wanted the game so it just seems like toying with them for no reason. I don't think "lying" is a part of it. You're thinking of it in human terms rather than marketing. They can't say shit until the company decides to state it officially. Companies don't tell you about every single little thing they're up to. They're businesses trying to sell you a product.
TheMightyEthan
I know they can't say it before the company decides to state it officially, which is why I suggested the "we don't comment on rumors and speculation." I'm not saying they need to tell us everything, I'm saying it bothers me when the things they do say are just flat out lies. If you don't want to tell the truth yet then just don't fucking say anything.
FMW
Welp. In my first file I fucked up by leveling up dumb stats because which stats are important for what was unclear to me. In my second file I ate the fire keepers soul before discovering "oops, if you eat THAT soul then you don't get upgraded healing - have fun playing the rest of the game in hard mode!" In my third file my sword broke in the depths of blight town. Going forward was no longer a possibility. I managed to crawl out of there by running past all the big ogre things... after about a dozen tries. That file eventually ended when my controller broke. In my fourth file, which I am working on now, I have upgraded my estus flask, I have purchased all the smith boxes ensuring I will NEVER be caught without a good weapon or gear, I have found a merchant I had never found before so I can buy magic spells, I've allocated my stat points so as to benefit the weapon I'm upgrading, and I even cleared the goddamn Capra Demon. I've learned lessons from failure, I've taken precautions. My payoff is... Now I'm cursed. I need to fight my way back out of the depths on half health. And there's a butcher in the way. Fuck this game man. Edited August 16, 2014 by Frosted Mini-Wheats
