Dark Souls

I beat Ornstein and Smaugh.  Wasn't easy.  Wish the walk to the boss was a bit shorter even with running past all the enemies I swear moving that staircase up and down a million times.

Now that I've accquired and placed the Lordvessel it's kind of paralyzing.  The new goal is "go out and beat all the bosses and get stronger while you do so".  So it's Megaman.  And I have about a ton of stages to choose from.  Off the top of my head:

  • The door in Deepwood Garden I open with the crest of Artorias (already puchased)
  • The tomb with the regenerating skeletons adjacent Firelink Shrine
  • The Valley of Drakes
  • The Ruins of Old Londo with the goddamn ghosts
  • The chaos hell beyond Quelaggs Domain
  • The mist door on the hill behind Anor Londo that used to be gold but now is white

And the problem I face is just knowing that this is Dark Souls so at this particular point in the game several of these options will lead me to certain death.  Others I won't have some item for.  There are probably only one or two places I'm actually equipped to traverse next, but Dark Souls would rather I play guess and check to find out where.  I mean, this is the game that starts you in Firelink Shrine and only one of the three available paths is at ALL viable.

So I think I'm taking a break from Dark Souls.  I'll come back to it when I'm so hungry for it that I'm willing to put up with the bullshit guess and check to find a level that I can actually play.

Honestly, while I'm sure there's a recommended order, I don't think the difficulty varies enough for it to matter. I'm pretty sure every time I made it there I went about it in a different order.

Without knowing your level, I guess I'd recommend the Catacombs under Firelink Shrine. I could be wrong but I think they're the easiest out of all the remaining big areas. As for the ghost ruins, I'll just say this: there is a point about halfway through where if you make it there the ghosts shouldn't be a problem for you anymore. I usually just run straight for it and worry about killing ghosts later.

Oh man, just talking about it makes me want to start a new playthrough, I can't fucking wait for the Steamworks update next month! I've been wanting to replay it ever since I finished 100%ing Dark Souls II months ago.

While a console port to PS4/XOne isn't surprising, it doesn't really sit right with me that they're going to be selling a new PC version. I mean, some of it is going to be patched in, which is cool, but some content and the visual upgrades (and DX11 support) will require a new purchase. There is absolutely no way to justify this on PC, there are no hardware limitations preventing them from updating the existing version's visuals.

They better price it very reasonably for existing owners because otherwise it's little more than a shameless cash grab. And for fuck's sake, if you're going to charge for it then at the very least put some effort into the process and offer a damn upgrade path. I'll most likely want the upgrade but I really don't need two copies of Dark Souls II in my Steam library.

I'm playing through Dark Souls 1 for the second time ever. First time I ragequit in Undead Burg with the Black Knight. I'm enjoying it more than last time, but I think I almost broke at the Gargoyles. Like, seriously, fuck that fight. Nothing in the game has enraged me as much so far.

1) Then you're going to absolutely fucking despise Dark Souls II. :P Not only is there somewhat of a repeat of the Gargoyles fight (only worse), one of the main complaints leveled at the game is how it takes an overly simplistic approach to creating challenge by simply increasing the number of enemies you're fighting at once. And, naturally, that design philosophy extends to boss fights.

2) The game is getting GFWL patched out in favor of Steamworks in the very near future. So, if that matters to you at all, you might want to hold off on playing for a little bit. They said there's going to be a way to transfer saves and achievements, though.

I've heard some very bad things about DS2, so I'm just sticking to trying to finish DS1 for now. FDS is right, I would probably wreck the Gargoyle fight now, but it was a really brutal wake-up call for a first playthrough.

I'm actually recording my first playthrough of Dark Souls here, and looking back at the earlier episodes, I've come a long way...

Dark Souls II isn't a bad game by any means, it's still better than most of what's out there imho. It's just disappointing because of the way it feels like they just tried to emulate the first game without really putting much thought into why Dark Souls did things the way it did.

It definitely improves on some elements but, overall, Dark Souls 1 had a lot of subtle but very deliberate design decisions that added up to create a very satisfying experience. Dark Souls II really feels like it lacked that strong, cohesive vision driving its design.

I'm pretty skeptical about this considering Bloodborne and Scholar of the First Sin literally just came out a couple months ago, but apparently Dark Souls 3 might be announced at E3.

If true, I imagine it's an early announcement and the game is still quite a ways off. But man, after DS2 turning out slightly disappointing and Bloodborne being PS4-exclusive, having Miyazaki return for Dark Souls 3 would be pretty damn awesome.

Hopefully we'll see some gameplay at the Sony conference or whatever. The games have always been revealed with CG trailers but this one isn't actually as far off as the previous ones.

Also

I'm okay with this if it means they keep the formula alive but take it in different directions a la Bloodborne. Bloodborne's cosmic horror lore/setting looked fucking great and the medieval/dark fantasy one is getting kind of old. I'd fucking love a sci-fi Souls-like game.

Definitely. Also, looks like that tweet was inaccurate.

Miyazaki clarified that Dark Souls III isn't the final game in the series but more of a turning point. They actually mention possibly dropping the fantasy setting and even mention sci-fi as a possible genre for future entry, which is fucking music to my ears!

Hearing that Miyazaki is back for this one makes me want to get it day one. :P

You and I both know you'd be getting it day one regardless. :P
