TheMightyEthan
But I think the beta is 2 versions ahead.
deanb
Beta is 6 weeks ahead. This is the Dev/Canary build. Which is 12 week ahead. That shot is from Canary, and I use Beta as my main build. It's pretty damn stable n you get a few features early as a benefit. I highly recommend it. TheFlyingGerbil
I use the beta, but I don't have the disappearing bar? Also, since your minimise and x buttons are on a separate line to the tabs whereas mine are on the same line then overall you;re not actually saving any space. I'm on 12.0.742.60 beta-m
deanb
Yeah that's from the dev channel/Canary. http://tools.google....lpage/chromesxs - it won't overwrite your current chrome version. It's its own program (even has it's own logo). If you want a peek at the far future then grab it and whack about:flags in the omnibar. Find the settings you want to twak, in this case it's "compact browser" or something similar, restart, then once restarted right-click a tab n "hide tabs". About:flags works in beta (and many normal) chrome too, just only the latest dev version has the newest options. On he beta release I suggest the experimental new tab page. And if you have multiple people on the same Pc, the Multiple Profiles option too. Also Gerbil if you un-maximize Chrome on any version it moves the tabs n _[]X on it's own line. I didn't have it maximized for the screenshot as I didn't see the need for it to be 1920 pixels long when the new features could be shown off in 1/3 of that.
TheFlyingGerbil
thanks, Dean. I guess I didn't notice that cos I hate programs not being maximised. Dunno, if I want to install another browser though it does look interesting.
deanb
Well if you're on the beta it's only >6 weeks and you'll have it without having to grab Canary on the side.
deanb
So guess what..... Mozilla seem to like Chromes new URL-barless UI too.. Surprise!!! http://mozillalabs.com/conceptseries/2011/05/24/community-concepts-ubiquitous-firefox-part-1-how-do-you-design-a-debris-less-browser/
Faiblesse Des Sens
Why credit Google? Similar extensions already existed.

Enervation
Notice how "IE with Chrome Frame" is actually higher than both Firefox and Chrome. I think it's probably connected to browser know-how, not particularly the browser used in and of itself. It's more of an unfortunate bystander in this study, really. TheRevanchist
Back in my youth, we had one way to connect to the internet: through DOS. There was no IE or Netscape or whatever you MTV kids use these days. We had to dial in, take 20 minutes to download a pixelated naked woman, and save it to a 5 1/4" floppy disk for the ol' spank bank. Aside from the old man disertation, this is how it once was. So, when I see how easy browsers are to use and manage these days, I almost care less about which one I use. Except for Safari. Not supporting Flash has kept me from being able to use certain sites on my phone. That's frustrating when you trying to get good tickets to an event. tonyp2121
I use Chrome for basically everything, and i only use Firefox for downloading Youtube videos.
toxicitizen
So after giving Chrome another shot and using it for about 2 weeks, I've reverted to Firefox. I loved most of the features (especially using the address bar as a search field) and how fast it was. The UI also grew on me quite a bit, but my experience with it was plagued with issues. I kept getting random "Oops! Chrome couldn't find this page" errors, even when the page loaded fine a second before. It even happened on Google's own sites... And sometimes it would load pages all weird. Like it messed up the html, or something. I'd get a white background with everything lined up to the left in a column. Then there's AdBlock, which apparently isn't worth a damn on Chrome. It failed to block a bunch of stuff, including ads playing before videos. So now I'm back to good old Firefox, though I did install a few add-ons that add Chrome-like features to it. Like merging the search engines into the url bar. It's a bit slower, but at least everything works right. Edited August 11, 2011 by FLD
Faiblesse Des Sens
I wonder if some of your problems stem from google not always using HTTP? Also, you can search from your address bar in Firefox. Change your DNS settings, or just use "g" and then type your search. Hell, I have duckduckgo as my standard in my nav bar which is why I have to still use "g" to search google. I like duckduckgo for it's "!" commands like "!market *insert search term here " that make it search the Android market. You do this through about:config changes. You don't need an add-on. There's a lifehacker article on it.
toxicitizen
Yeah, I know I can do it for google, but with the add-on I can also switch between the other search engines I added, which is actually superior to how it was in chrome, imo. Also, I like it better aesthetically with a single, long url bar than with a separate field for searching.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Also, I like it better aesthetically with a single, long url bar than with a separate field for searching. I know. This was exactly what I was describing on Firefox. I can't even remember the last time I had a search bar. Also, what's this extension you're using? It seems familiar with the ability to switch engines (though just typing in a "g" or whatever shortcut you want is super easy.)

Faiblesse Des Sens
Yeah that's what I used to use. Pretty unnecessary now.
Mal
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/firefox-7-memory-improvements,news-12148.html Well, at least they're working on and finally have something to show. Firefox being a memory hog seems to be the biggest complaint.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Firefox already has better memory performance than Chrome though. It's shitty add-ons that cause problems and unfortunately one of the biggest ones (ABP) is a culprit. Anyways, Chrome's "each tab is its own process" way of doing thing absolutely tears through RAM once you get a few tabs going. They word it as "turned into a huge memory hog" when it's always been a complaint with FF and something they've always worked on.
deanb
My grievance with the memory performance would be that while Chrome n FF are about on par for memory, Chrome actually uses it while Firefox just hoards it up. To Chrome RAM is whey powder used to make it lean n strong, to firefox RAM is cake to fill it's face with and become slow and fat.
deanb
http://tylerdowner.w...on-and-musings/ So the Mozilla Community Lead quit recently over the way Mozilla is handling bugs in Firefox. Apparently their current style ("Triage") is pretty much the one they used when they put out a new version every 2 years or so. Putting out a new version every 3 months has meant bugs just aren't being fixed. It was something I kind of expected. Chrome can do rapid release because they started out that way. Firefox is churning out new versions 8 times faster than before and something had to give. Also that layout brings back memories.
Mal
Yeah... bugs are showing. I am getting sick and tired of Firefox just not being responsive for a few minutes every so often. There is not rhyme or reason to it to freeze.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I'm running FF8 without issues though after reading that posting I see how this is a huge problem and needs to be dealt with ASAP.
