Saturnine Tenshi
I used Asbel, Sophie, Pascal and Cheria. I think that was her name. But I quit playing around chapter 8 or so.
Toshi
k cool, that's who I'm using so far cause I don't care for Malik much  I will probably finish it because I can't not finish things no matter how terrible it gets once I've started. excel_excel
So this is coming out on Friday over here with a special 'day 1 edition' as its called. Â Anyone picking it up? I'm a sucker for a Tales game, and it might be a limited run like other Namco Bandai games......but then again I've got a big backlog. TheFlyingGerbil
It's a bargain though - no dearer than a standard edition and some nice stuff in there. I'm guessing if it's the day 1 edition, once they're gone, they're gone. Give in to the temptation!
excel_excel
So....I bought it on Friday (Nintendo games keep their trade in value so I got €35 off!), played into it a few hours.  First impressions. The good: Battle system is nice. Its got an action point system, that is spent doing anything but dodging and running, and you get bonuses to those points for dodging and holding your defensive stance for a few seconds and attacking. Its fun, although even on hard mode, regular enemies drop like flies, whereas bosses are waaaay stronger. The main characters relationship with his father is interesting and different from pretty much everything in the game.  The bad: This looks like an HD Wii game. A BAD looking HD Wii game. Tales of Graces did not look good for the Wii compared to something like Xenoblade. it looks clean here but that's about the only positive you can glean from it. It looks so basic, everything about it from the simple character models to the incredibly stiff animation looks poor. The animation in some cutscenes, oh my God, looks terrible. You know the way in a some Telltale games a character will never hand another character an item properly, or actually touch another persons hand because of the basic animation? That's this here, times a hundred.  The characters. These are the most cliche ridden characters I've ever seen in a JRPG. The plucky hero who's courageous and enthusiastic and always does right but makes mistakes cause he's sooo enthusiastic? Yep.The mysterious female, with a unknown past who takes in a monotone voice and doesn't understand concepts like 'friends' and this causes all sorts of HIGHlarious highjinks to ensue? Yes. The cowardly but smarter younger brother who is a lot more cautious then his brother but looks up to him? Uh-huh. The best friend girl, who makes not so subtle references towards loving the main character but she seriously finds him annoying..if only he could realise she loves him!......Jesus yes. The posh prince, who's a bit snobby and isn't normally used to having people round him but overall has a good heart? OH YES. The dialogue is hideous. I've heard its get better once you get to the 'adult' chapter. I hope it does. Edited September 4, 2012 by excel_excel
Saturnine Tenshi
It doesn't get better. Poor excel. :< Â On the other hand, it is a Wii game. So I suppose that's to be expected. They didn't remake it for the PS3 iirc.
excel_excel
But there are plenty of Wii games that look better. Honestly the enviorments looks just as bad as something like Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube and THAT looked just average at the time. Just compare this, to game running through Dolphin at a HD resolution. There's no comparison. Â Oh one more annoying thing. The invisible walls. So many invisible walls in the environments and with no logic or consistency to where they are put. I despise that. Alex Heat
I wasn't horribly bothered by anything in Graces, other than maybe Sophie's voice actress, the atypical pointless comic relief and annoyingly shonen protagonist who mutters about protecting his friends (protip: Everyone wants to do this, it isn't special) and succeeds purely because he is the protagonist. Â Several things make it better for me though. Â There's no high school to be seen. Â Jamieson Price playing the grizzled veteran that enjoys tormenting teenagers. Â There isn't a single high school to be seen! Â The change in the battle system is actually kind of nice. Hard to get used to at first if you played previous games first. Â No fucking high schools and high school students or PG dating sims, yeah! Â But I admit that I'm not horribly difficult to please. TCP
Ugh... I don't know what's worse with that game... the characters, the writing, or the acting. All of it is bad. Truly fucking awful. I can put up with some cheesy dialogue in my JRPG's, I can put up with some cliche characters too, but this is just insulting to everyone. It might get better after the kids grow up but that takes 6-8 hours of gameplay to get to that point. No thanks.
Saturnine Tenshi
It gets worse when they grow up, Cowboy. I really tried to enjoy it, but I ended up quitting deep into the game. >.> Sometime after Richard goes to destroy the world or something. excel_excel
I'm liking it a good bit more now that I'm on the grown up part. The child part is really a prologue despite its around 6 hour lenght. The battle system is even getting better and the title system is a neat way to go about leveling up and gaining more skills. Plus the dialogue isn't as bad. For the most part. I'm enjoying all the little things, like the skits that actually give a bit more character development. The humour though falls flat on its face. Saturnine Tenshi
The titles were a nice touch. You get more points toward them on harder difficulties by the way.
excel_excel
Ah great, I've been playing mostly on hard. Except for the first boss Bryce. Holy crap that was a big difficulty spike!
Mal
So, I am watching a stream of this game. The protagonist needs an afro. He seems to be dressed to go to a disco.
Alex Heat
Personally, Asbel's outfit really reminded me of Bleach for some reason.
