TheForgetfulBrain
So I guess Rift is almost out, eh? March, and now dear Steam is tempting us with TF2 items and loads of in-game content for pre-ordering. Anyone tempted? I'm sure I don't have time for an MMO, but still. Honestly, I've been confusing it with TERA for about a year or so (and it appears I'm not alone - here's a humorous article outlining the differences between the two games, and offering a quick look at what each game entails: http://lorehound.com/rift/rift-vs-tera-theyre-different-games/). I've got a few Beta event invites, but I haven't tried any of them out yet. I suppose I should, just to see what it's all about. Anyone else played any of the Beta events? Anyone interested? Anyone already pre-ordered the game? Let's hear about it! Pirandello
What? How the heck can you confuse TERA with Rift? Or vice versa? They look nothing alike. Still, though, it's something that I'm willing to try once I get my part-time. I like the way my Cleric looks. And another beta testing session starts tomorrow. docsfox
I may be mistaken but that looks awfully like WoW. Also I'm not paying monthly fees for a single game. That's the main thing keeping me away from most MMOs in general and this is no exception.
TheForgetfulBrain
What? How the heck can you confuse TERA with Rift? Or vice versa? They look nothing alike. The first link explains some possible reasons. I also got Prototype and Infamous confused before they came out, so perhaps that explains it somewhat. I've met my fair share of people who despise having to pay monthly subscriptions for MMOs, but are more than happy enough to front up the cash for XBL subscriptions and overpriced DLC. Enervation
Eh, I'm probably leaning more towards TERA myself. Not that I'd probably buy it. At all. The monster known as Guild Wars 2 looms on the horizon, and threatens to engulf all things MMO as we know it.
TheForgetfulBrain
Yeahh, if any MMO gets my money, chances are it's gonna be Guild Wars 2 - that looks incredible. Still, I'm downloading the Beta for Rift to give it a whirl this weekend.

I'm in a room with dodgy internet connection, and it's blipped out for a second or two twice, and then I have to start all over again. Aihhy. Difference here is I don't pay for XBL and the only way I get DLC is when they are bundled with the full game and on sale. I'm simply not paying a monthly fee for anything that I may or may not use. I take the same approach even to things like gym memberships.

Also, even with the price of xbl going up, its still cheaper than most mmo subscriptions. Sure, PSN is free, but also still lacking in features behind xbl. I love my PS3, playing multiplayer on psn is great and I'm glad its free, but XBL is a great service and totes worth the cost imo. and as for dlc... not all dlc is overpriced / unneeded. For the record, I agree with doc's sentiment. I refuse to play for a game, then pay monthly for the ability to play said game. Drop either the cost of the software or the monthly fees and I'd be sorely tempted. I played Guild Wars for a while. It was ehhh, never bothered to get the expansions. TheForgetfulBrain
I finally got the Beta downloaded. Unfortunately they're having downtime at the moment and I'm about to go out for the evening, so I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet. Have to say though, that was a hooooorrible CG opening. Bad voice acting, constant large lettering across the screen, bad CG. Not saying anything about the game, however - judging a game by its CG is like the classic of judging a book by its cover, and not an accurate thing to do. deanb
I finally got the Beta downloaded. Unfortunately they're having downtime at the moment Hah. I had similar with the FFXIV beta. Took nearly 2 days to download, then when it was they had downtime for the weekend then expanded to a week then when it went up I had an update to grab. Eurgh. It may of been extreme but I don't mind that the dev team getting fired over that one.
CrowKnow
Haven't really played any.. modern/western mmo's and managing to play during the 1st beta for rift it was interesting. Souls gave an interesting way to branch compared to the usual "get to lvl ##, upgrade to class A or B". I enjoyed the whole rift thing quite a bit though. Never fully understood how opening them and such worked but, having tons of random people help each other to take out the waves of monsters that would otherwise be killing anyone on the roads or attacking camps was rather fun. Although organizing a party during the havoc is difficult and when people don't group up to close rifts you generally have to abandon the area until they eventually close by themselves (I think). That being said I haven't played any of the betas since the initial one and I doubt I'll spend the money for the cost of the game and the subscription especially since the tf2 items will eventually be craftable :3. They fixed the issues you had in later Betas. They now have a public group system where you can just click something at the top and auto-join a group. Figuring out the process of opening rifts is fairly simple. Basically there's a sort of 'pre-Rift' called a tear, and a player uses an ability to turn it into a full-blown Rift, where players will either band together to fight off the Rift, or will be replaced by AI Soldiers, which I've only experienced once for a moment. Most of the time soldiers band together to fight them off, since there are very high-stakes, high-quality rewards from fighting off rifts. Also, Rifts eventually close themselves, but another thing, called invasions, occur, which don't close themselves and consist of several rifts opening. They take considerably more people to overwhelm and often require a battle plan. They can not be summoned by players and happen maybe thrice a day. If I had a job I wouldn't mind paying monthly for EVE Online, but that's the only MMO that I know of that actually interests me. Plus new content gets added pretty much every 6 months. They seem willing to upgrade the graphics when necessary as well. 15 bucks a month isn't that much and I can stop paying/playing whenever I want. Also in EVE you can play to pay your subscription once you get good enough! Er, anyway. I've heard a lot about this Rift game recently, but I don't really get the hype. What's so special about it? BrainHurtBoy...2
Well, it's basically a Fantasy MMO, but it differentiates itself from having awesome, large-scale world events and insanely deep character progression, as well as looking just beautiful. Anyway, how does the whole 'making real world money' thing work in EVE?
McBeeferton
Simply, you get enough money and you buy an in-game item that, when used, extends your time. These items are sold by other players to make a quick buck. You see, you can get a game-time code and either use it or input it in the game and get the in-game item. There, you can sell it or use it for yourself. I remember not long ago when they made the items able so you can transport them between stations, someone attacked a ship carrying loads of the time items and ended up making the owner lose thousands of real-life money. I think since then they made it so that you can't move the items outside of stations again, though. EVE is a brutal, brutal game. I'd call it the Demon's Souls of MMOs.

TheForgetfulBrain
Finally got a chance to play some Rift beta. This is on my laptop at the utter lowest settings, so I didn't get to judge how great I'm sure the game looks. Gotta say though, if I was in the market for an MMO, I would certainly buy this. It's got a beautiful amount of polish - it's nothing like the anti-user friendly MMOs of old where you spent most of your time wondering where the hell you had to go next. Everything is clearly outlined and helpful. The Soul system is also very enticing. I love that you get to combine multiple classes from the outset, and quickly start defining your character. Alas. I don't have the sort of time a MMO takes - I've still got many, many single player games with countless hours that I own and need to play, and don't even have time for those. Still. Tempting - very tempting. I'm curious - how many people here are considering buying the game, or have already done so? I saw that BHB has already gone ahead and pre-ordered, off the strength of the Beta. Anyone else?
CrowKnow
Been considering getting it since the beta but, atm not so sure... Still got a backlog of games from steam's xmas sale, I'm a little weary of the 50$ price tag + future subscriptions, and it's currently fighting Love for my mmo slot which I'm been interested in since I first heard about it.
TheForgetfulBrain
From what I've heard, Love seems more like something like Minecraft, whereas this is more your average (but very nicely polished) MMO, so I'd almost place them in different categories altogether. Johnny
I have to say this about Love: It's very very VERY strange. It's more of a cooperative adventure first person shooter. Really can't be described adequately.
