Layton's thread

We have a used one that some kid thought was too hard and he traded it in today. Totally jumping on that tomorrow with the Tetris DS we have.

Honestly some of the puzzles stumped me, too. I was surprised when I got the first game that kids played it. You gotta be pretty witty and know a bit of algebra for this game.

I've always liked games that make you think outside the box. Some of Layton's puzzles are just mean, though. They make you think harder than you really need to you or you just have to guess out your ass.

I found that Layton tries to trick you with the "HERE'S A BUNCH OF INFORMATION THAT WILL BE USELESS IN THE END!" tactic. One specific one I remember is the rat procreation puzzle in the Curious Village where it ended up having an answer of 1224^39 if you had actually done the math than read the question correctly.

I wasted two sheets of paper because I got too excited.

I got this totally sweet sleeve for free for registering all three games on Club Nintendo!

I haven't played the third one yet but on my most trusted review site they said it has the best story of the three and since that is the only thing in it that really changes I should be very happy with it.

Joe

P.S. the puzzle I remember most was from the first game I think and it was about a boy on a canoe dropping his hat and turning back for it. Even after unlocking all the hints I still had to go on the internet to get the answer! I still didn't understand how they got the answer!

Sorry about the double post but the last one was a month ago so I hope you'll forgive me.

I finished the third game and it is indeed my favourite. It didn't have so many of the 'here's the same puzzle but harder' padding that the others did and the story seemed to move a bit faster.

Anyway, the real reason I came in here is slightly off topic, but I was wondering if anyone had seen the eternal diva film. It's on blu ray for £6 and I doubt it will ever be on TV so I was wondering if it's worth buying?

I just picked up the film from Amazon.co.uk (sadly the BD is region locked so I got the DVD) so I can't really let you know until after I watch it. It looks fun, though.

I found it to be very good, well worth it for 6 quid. Things got a bit crazy at the end but still very good. The dub was fantastic as well.

I watched The Eternal Diva tonight and while I know it's not saying much but it's probably the best video game movie I've ever seen. Though Mewtwo Strikes Back (the Japanese version) was totally radical as well.

My fiancee didn't care for it as much as I did but then she didn't finish all three games like I did.

It kind of makes me want to go back and replay the original trilogy. On a side note, I'm a bit pissed that The Last Specter hasn't been released in America and yet the 3DS game is already said to be coming out at the end of the year.

And well, Last Specter got a showing at E3 but not date (just by the end of the year) Here's hoping that they are working on the 3DS one as well. Getting the Phoenix Wright crossover would be a little tricky I'm sure as outside of Japan Nintendo is thrown into the mix and whatever contract they have with Level 5 for Layton would have to fit in there with Capcom.

I just finished Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box!  It wasn't quite as good as the first one, and the plot ended up being kinda not great... but it wasn't offensively not great.  Just kinda corny and I felt like some of the extra elements weren't good.  Like the tea making - that was a little too arcane I think.  The plot didn't actually make a ton of sense either, if one were to get worried about that.  I think that picking at nits in Layton logic is a poor way to approach the franchise personally, but I know there are many people who struggle to accept that telling a story that's internally consistent and plotted isn't always so important.

But none of these problems were systematic, they were all unique to this title.  The bummer pacing in portions and iffy extra content didn't change the fact that the puzzles were great, the animation and music were both pristine, the euro-anime art remains endearing and unique (in my experience at least).  And this Layton didn't spike it's difficulty quite so bad in the last few manditory puzzles, which is a good fix from the original.  Really killed my momentum when I needed to Gamefaqs the last door lock in the middle of that super exciting finale to curious village.

The Unwound Future is on it's way to me as I type this.  I look forward to it greatly.  Also... guys, I need Layton X Ace Attorney.  I need it badly.

It's definitely a good you're not put off by a nonsensical plot if you're going on to The Unwound Future. I won't spoil it for you because it is still very enjoyable but there are a few "seriously?!" moments.

I've just finished the fourth and am playing the fifth at the moment. They're both definitely worth carrying on with as well. Last Spectre is the "how it all began" one and i welled up a bit at the end : and the jump in to 3D for Miracle Mask works really well, I'm not too far in to it but just from the mechanics it is probably the best so far.

I know they often feel like more of the same but they always manage to keep my interest.  I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for the layton/ace crossover. Has it been confirmed for a western release? I don't think I've read anything definite.

Well that may or may not exactly happen either.  Yes, Professor Layton games have been reliably localized... by Nintendo.  They handle all the overseas publishing duties for that franchise.  Level 5 has been dabbling in self-publishing outside Japan recently with some of their 3DS eShop content but they may or may not be prepared to localize and publish a large retail game stuffed with text and voice.  If not, a crossover between these two franchises on a handheld isn't exactly the sort of project other publishers are going to be falling over each other to take over.

So if Nintendo of America is helping out with Ace Attorney X Layton as they have with the regular Layton games, then we wouldn't know it yet.  Their normal schedule is to announce 3-4 months before release and release about a year after Japanese release.  I would expect to hear about a Nintendo release around E3.  But I haven't read anything suggesting that Nintendo has any involvement with this project at all... and I don't know who else would do distribution.

Does anyone have a save file for Unwound Future that they could share with me? The DS died tonight while my wife was saving and it corrupted her file. She thinks she was pretty close to the end, she had just found out about Clive. Obviously the closer to that the better, but any file that would save her having to start from the beginning would be appreciated.

Well, Layton X Ace Attorney came out.  It kinda blows.  I'm bummed.  Sometimes two great tastes don't taste great together.  It's the nonsense magic storytelling of Layton that we were discussing up above, but then you go to court and peel events that happen in a fun and friendly fantasy Layton world apart.  It's TERRIBLE!

You need to either do the Layton thing and not care about the rules of reality all the time and just let what's emotionally right prevail, or you need to stick to the way the world actually works to dissect interesting murder mysteries.  As is the mysteries are the worst in any Ace Attorney game ever because they revolve around the rules of magic, which are all made up on the spot and thoroughly uninteresting.  But the story can't ever just handwave and say "and then Layton tipped his hat and said something dapper and everyone left the room happy" because they're trying to treat everything like a mystery with cause and effect.

Ugh.

On the upside, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is REALLY good.  Best Layton or second best, depending on how much you like Unwound Future.  I think Azran Legacy is the best, hands down.

I'm certainly enjoying Azran Legacy more than unwound future though I've I've only just got my first egg so I'm not nearly done yet. I know they're always a bit far fetched but the whole idea of the city was just so ridiculous it annoyed me. Plus, I think the transfer to 3D went really well but they've really notched it up another level with Azran Legacy - some of the scenes are really beautiful, like the first time they panned down into the forest by Lake Kohd with the squirrel and there are a lot of little interactive treats in the backgrounds - it all feels a bit more alive. Plus the story seems just like an adventure so far rather than the magic - I hope it doesn't fall too far off the rails as I progress.

Shame about the Layton x phoenix game though. It sounded like something I'd love though I'm sure I'll still play it at some point. I want to play some more of the Phoenix Wright games first though  as I only played the first one but did really enjoy it.
