If the newest one is lollipop I guess it must be.  Here are the changes I noticed:

- New keyboard.  I don't care for it and I switched to Swiftkey.

- Notifications on lock screen.  You can go directly to an app from the lock screen by double tapping the notification.  You now have to swipe straight up to unlock your device, so bear that in mind if you were in the habit of swiping left or right.

- Email app was replaced by Gmail app.  It's a piece of shit and it doesn't even work for me.

- New back, home, and menu icons.  I don't know why they changed this because now they're just a bunch of vague shapes.

- In the past, at least on my tablet, swiping down from the upper left would pull down a list of app notifications while pulling down from the right would bring down tablet settings.  Now, pulling down from anywhere at the top will bring down the notifications and pulling down a second time will expand the menu to bring down the settings too.  There's also a big blue button for switching user profiles.

- New settings menu

There's probably more but I only messed with it for a little bit.

Lollipop is Android 5.0, it's the first major version in a few years, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and KitKat all being 4.x, so it'll be a fair few changes, espeically with the material design stuff which is trickling through to many apps as well.

As for email, I use Gmail for my gmail accounts and Outlook for my outlook accounts. I'm not sure what you use for your email to make any major suggestions. Lifehacker tends to do decent run downs of various apps. I know Dropbox have one that's meant to be alright: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mailboxapp

(Though I'm pretty sure the Lollipop Gmail is essentially the old multi-service Email app rolled in one though. They changed Email over to be more like Gmail and Gmail to have support for more services. Then crushed Email)

I plugged in my phone earlier because it was at 18% battery.  The charging light came on and the notification said it was charging, but when I checked on it 5 hours later it was at 12%.  The battery isn't that old so I'm wondering if there might be some other reason it isn't charging properly?

Settings -> Battery

See what is the biggest power drain (after screen obvs).

For some reason my biggest power drain is always "Android System", and I cannot figure out why.  It's not anywhere near as bad as Jack's situation, but maybe once every couple of weeks it gets drained bad enough that I can't even wait until I go to bed to start charging it again, and I'm typically using ~60% per day.

have you tried turning off background data (or even data all together), bluetooth and wifi and restarting your phone, and not loading up any apps. that way you've not got unknown apps running nor high drain wireless.

obviously that's not a longterm solution but it may help you discount some things or make you more confident it;s the battery.

I never use bluetooth or wifi, even at home.  I have a tablet so there's no need.  Hell, I don't even use the location services unless I need a GPS, which is almost never.  I also make a habit of routinely killing any background apps I haven't been using for a while, so I rarely have more going on in the background besides Tapatalk, Chrome, and Steam.

Why are you killing background apps? If the system needs the RAM it will do it for you. You're just risking causing them to restart automatically which drains the battery more.

For the love of god post your  battery stats already. Are you rooted?
