deanb
My contract is up in November, and I'm eyeing the One+ Two and LG G4. Don't really use the pen enough to justify sticking with the Note, but like the large screen size. Loads of competitors come out with "Phablets" in past few years. TheFlyingGerbil
what's happening with the oneplus OS? Wasn't there something weird with cyanogen stopping work on it or something.
deanb
I'm not sure on the details of the Cyanogen falling out, but their new OS is "OxygenOS"Â https://oneplus.net/uk/oxygenos
TheFlyingGerbil
Really tempted to go back to Windows for my next phone as I'm constantly disappointed by android but I am tempted by the oneplus phones.

Thursday Next
what's happening with the oneplus OS? Wasn't there something weird with cyanogen stopping work on it or something.  CM had a non-exclusive deal to ship CM on One Plus world wide. CM then signed an exclusive deal to ship CM on some other phone manufacturer in India. This then created a deal of uncertainty over the One Plus One. Initially One Plus were told to stop selling. Then a sensible judge interpreted the "exclusive" deal as "exclusive except your previous commitments."  The really bad bit was how CM's honcho dealt with it. Carl from One Plus saw the India story, sent an email saying "Can we chat about stuff when you come to visit." and got a one line response from CM honcho saying "We are terminating."
danielpholt
CM hasn't exactly come out of this last year looking great. They've mad amateur looking moves at every turn, their CEO looks like a complete asshole and they've pissed off half their userbase. I for one can't wait to see what One Plus does with the second phone, and more specifically OxygenOS.
Mal
Don't really use the pen enough to justify sticking with the Note, but like the large screen size. If any of you or new people ever do field work (any natural sciences), the Note and its pen is quite awesome out in the field. The screen might not be able to fully fight the bright sun but being able to do this: out in the field is invaluable. As a TA, it allows me to snap a picture and point out features immediately. No more trying to point out features and hoping the other person sees it the same way as you do. Helpful as a student too since I can show it to the professor and see if I'm on the right track. These doodles could be closer than the first photo or be something like this: I can also make sketches of stuff so I can save space in my notebook. Â I'm sure the other smart phones has similar features but the pen for sure makes this more precise. For documenting science and junk, the Note # are pretty good.
CorgiShinobi
Finally upgraded my phone after 2.5 years on my old HTC Droid DNA. Went with a Samsung Galaxy S6 as I've never had a Galaxy phone and have always wanted one. I'm sure it's not the best of the best, but I'm a simple guy not looking for a handheld computer. Mister Jack
Actually I never found anything that I thought was better than the S6 when I was looking at new phones.
danielpholt
From what I've heard its a pretty great device. I'm not a massive fan of the back of the phone, and I hear the battery is a little hit and miss, but the phone itself is fantastic.
TheMightyEthan
I haven't found anything specifically better than the S6 either, but I can't bring myself to get an S6 because it doesn't have a slot for an SD card and the battery isn't user-changeable, so I'm staying with my S4 for now. deanb
I'm eyeing the Moto X Style/Pure (regional naming, not sure which is which). Hits the whole size, SD card, etc points and apparently a cracking camera too. It got announced like 2hrs after the One+ Two and its many compromises and omissions. I'd be downgrading if I picked that up. Â I'm tempted to buy outright n see if it does that Motomaker thing. Be nifty.
TheMightyEthan
My aunt has an S6 and the camera on that thing is great too. I always thought the pictures my S4 took were perfectly fine, but her phone blows them away. Don't know how it compares to the Moto X Whatever though. deanb
Yeah S6 is meant to be the best phone camera on the market at the moment, though Moto are really pushing theirs at the moment and a lot of folks (including a photography mag) are banging on about it. It's out next week so reviews should be coming soon.
TheMightyEthan
Nice. Too bad the screen's so big. My S4 is already on the edge of being too big.
danielpholt
I've heard the G4 has a pretty great camera too; shame the software supposedly sucks.  As for me, I'm still really happy with my One+1. I was initially interested in the +2, but nah, that's not going to happen. The MOTO X Whatever, now that, that I could go for. Via MotoMaker of course.
Mal
Recall of Note 5s in 3, 2... Â And I got to say, the more I think about it the more I'm starting to get a bit peeved on how fast a smartphone's performance degrades. I guess it comes with packing so much tech in such a small device.
deanb
It was like ifixit or something earlier did a breakdown of a Note 5 and showed how you'd have to be an utter idiot to put it the wrong way around (and on purpose since the pen nib makes it a bit fiddly) . It'd be like putting superglue in your 3.5 jack and being surprised you can't take it out and you've bust the port. And as picked up on, it does even state in the manual the obvious "don't put it in the wrong way" with pictures included. Â They're on the 5th Note, the internal grip and pen detection has been in since the first first phone and it's been built to go in nib first since the first Note. TheMightyEthan
From what I've read the difference on the Note 5 is that the back end is the same size as the rest of the pen so it slides in backward without trouble.
deanb
And as noted you'd have to be an idiot or break your shiny new phone on purpose. Both are exampled in the Mac podcast vid Mal posted. If it's not your first Note you'd already know how the pen goes in and out, and if it's not I'd imagine you'd read the manual to learn how the pen works and it has a very hand and pretty clear warning and even a photo.
TheMightyEthan
But it would also be easy to do because you're not paying much attention and put it in the wrong way, or let someone else use your phone or something. It's stupid of them to make it physically possible to put it in backwards.
deanb
I'm sure they have their reasons (the fact this is thier first Note with a metal build, as demanded by folks who don't seem to have noted the whole issue with the metal iPhones n permanent bending, would probably explain why it's built the way it is now. (my plastic note pen won't go in backwards without considerable force, my original Note wouldn't even go in the wrong way around nib-end due to how the frame is built). danielpholt
Whilst I don't doubt that it'd take a moment of complete idiocy to actually put the pen in the wrong way around, there should still be a safeguard against it. It doesn't require much force to do, so Samsung should really have you covered here.
Mal
What stood out to me is how easy it is to do. You just need a brief moment of idiocy to pull it off. Or some punk or kid to just quickly screw it up. Â I should say that for the Note 4 (I'm using it right now), it is totally possible to insert the pen backwards. Rather easy too. It just won't get stuck or break my phone.
