TheFlyingGerbil
I'd settle for being able to send and receive text messages when I'm at home - hardly seems like too much to ask.
Mr. GOH!
Texting doesn't work when you're home?
Thursday Next
Presumably has crappy signal where he lives.
deanb
Yeah, probably quite likely especially given TFG is from Wales which has a lot of sparse areas.
TheMightyEthan
That seems so weird to me, given how densely populated the UK is. Â Even around here it seems like the only time I can't get service is if I'm underground or in a building built like a faraday cage that's miles from the nearest town. Thursday Next
It's just *really* densely populated in some areas, and very sparsely populated in others. e.g. ~10% of the country's (89,000 sq miles) population lives in the greater London area (600 square miles). Which works out at about 10% of the Population living in 0.6% of the area.
TheMightyEthan
According to Wikipedia, the least densely populated district of England (which I know is not synonymous with the UK) is 25 people per square kilometer.  Wales' least densely populated principal area is 26 people per square kilometer.  The average density of Kansas (meaning many areas are much lower*) 13.5 people per square kilometer, just over half the least densely populated area of England and Wales.  It may not seem very dense to you, but even your sparsely populated areas are way densely populated compared to where I live.   *The lowest density county in Kansas that I found is Greeley county with 0.6 people per square kilometer.  Where I live it's 12 per square kilometer.
deanb
Yeah 26 people per 1km squared isn't gonna be enough for someone to stick up a mast so they can all get great coverage, especially (and this is a big difference between Kansas and Wales) when there's all the hills and valleys around so you're probably gonna need even more up to get decent coverage and in weird places that'll cost more. Â We're not super low density, but there's low enough populated areas that there's a few areas without brilliant coverage. There's gov't grants to get it sorted but despite what american capatialsm would tell you, private companies don't tend to spend that so well. Same with the shamefully shitty high-speed broadband rollout in rural areas.
TheFlyingGerbil
You are all correct that I have poor reception where I live. Texts seem to be the last thing to stop working as reception gets worse. It's mostly to do with the location of our house/topography of the area more than population density And normally I can do everything else over WiFi. Fantastically at the moment we just changed phone/broadband to BT and they've messed something up so we have no landline and no broadband either at the moment which is a bit pants.
deanb
Texts are essentially just the automatic signal that gets passed around towers already anyway so yeah they're likely last to go. Kinda balls when you see a limited text bundle.
TheMightyEthan
And since it's so little data you don't need a constant solid connection, the text can go through any time there's a connection for a very short period of time, even though a call or data connection would be dropped. TheFlyingGerbil
Urgh. Just found out won't have broadband until 21st of December. Flip me. All have to get my internet fix at break times in work. That is not much cop. Also should point that although no reception isn't to do with population, no 4g is and its also why we have no full fibre broadband and so have to keep a landline. deanb
Just got Marshmallow update. Not noticed any major changes apart for new app opening animation (which I really disliked to swapped out). There's the Google On Tap thing but not had much chance to play with that much. I think most stuff is under the hood.
Mal
There seems to be rumblings about microSD coming back for the S7 line along with some other neat features like large battery capacity. Rumors, nothing more yet but I guess Samsung phones are back on the table.
danielpholt
I've been with my Nexus 6p for a little over a week at this point, and I've got to say, I love it.  Size wise, I think it might be a touch too large for what I'm looking for (the OnePlus 1 really was ideal), but with a decent soft-touch case on the back I'm not having too much trouble gripping the phone with one hand. The camera seems solid, which coming from a phone with a very decent camera in the 1P1 was all sorts of essential. I'm still a touch worried about that giant glass camera region. I'm absolutely certain that *IF* I rub against a wall it'll be the first thing to crack, and I'm not sure how replaceable it is with the unit being sealed.  All in all, it's a lovely phone. Marsh Mellow is real nice too.
Eleven
Hey anyone know how to forward text messages on android to somewhere accessible on the web? End result is I wanna get the texts from my android phone to the Internet, so I can look it up on a desktop or from my iPhone. Â Does hangouts save text messages to the cloud in a way accessible on a PC? Something like that? Â Â Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
danielpholt
When you say text messages I assume you're talking about SMS and not hangouts/telegram? Â Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
deanb
Are you wanting to export your texts, sort of like a back-up, or as in access the current texts on your phone from the web. For the former use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en_GB Then I guess throw in Drive/Dropbox or whatever of your choice. Â For the latter use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pushbullet.android&hl=en_GB And this Chrome extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pushbullet/chlffgpmiacpedhhbkiomidkjlcfhogd And/or this on your iPhone: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pushbullet/id810352052?ls=1&mt=8 (though I'm unsure if it'll shunt from Android to iPhone, I know I can respond to texts from my Android tablet though so it might work.). Â I <3 pushbullet. Does more than SMS, but I use it a fair bit for that if my parents are messaging me and what not. Much easier to use my PC keyboard to reply.
Eleven
It's the latter and Pushbullet does the job well! Â I just need access to my other phone's texts (SMS), because it receives security codes (2FA) that I can't move to my main number. Pushbullet works extremely well in this case. I can see my texts from the web interface or the extension. Â Pushbullet iOS app doesn't show me the texts, but I can login to the web app from Safari and see it from there, so I can still view it. TheFlyingGerbil
I have a nexus 5x and apparently the nougat update started rolling out 22 august. Does anyone know how long it takes until they're finished so i can prepare myself for the worst case scenario as the wait so far had been interminable. I know I can sign up for the beta programme to get it but at this point I'm hoping it can't be much longer.
deanb
Not a clue, but should be soonish given Nexus devices sort of have priority on it, usually followed by Motorola, then everyone else spread out over a period of months. TheMightyEthan
You may even be able to download the new firmware and install it yourself. I did that with lollipop.
madbassman39
on my 5x I was in the beta program but am now using the official build. Benefit of the beta program is I get to keep nightshift which is not in the final build anymore I guess.

TheMightyEthan
I can't tell you the number of times my wife and I are talking about something and I go to google the answer and after I put in the first word google auto suggests exactly what we were talking about.
