Mercurial
It was a penny cause I already have a plan with them. It'll get here in about 3 days. Edited August 11, 2011 by Hakidia
Mal
I love my Samsung Epic but... fuck Samsung for taking so damn long to get shit updated. My battery is dying but if I had the Gingerbread update, it should last longer. Another year and a half then I'll be free. Â And I would root my phone but my Epic has been acting funny. Once it woke me up vibrating while off. Then another time it died on me with the screen fading like ho a Gameboy screen does. So yeah... replacement. Maybe. Faiblesse Des Sens
Your phone acting funny is a reason you should root it!
Mal
Its still under warranty so I need to see if Samsung budges. What I'm experiencing is not right. Just having it sit there and going bonkers on you is no good since I'm afraid something is wrong with the hardware. Â Also, if I root it, it voids the warranty so yeah.
deanb
Just ignore warranties Rooting is a software fix, afaik (though I've not done it) it's usually pretty easy to return back to normal if you need to. Â As for myself I'm currently browsing available phones. My contract is nearly up and Virgin have a habit of getting me a new phone a couple months before it ends (I guess to stop me looking elsewhere). Only problem is the only Android they have on my current tariff is the Wildfire S. So I'd be going all over again with the same phone, but missing the mousepad/button. Â I quite like the Galaxy S which is in my price range and one of the few Samsungs to be supported by Cyanogenmod. Â btw when looking I saw the Nexus S was "the first phone with a curved screen". I couldn't really see it. Whats that all about?
MasterDex
I've heard nothing but good things about the HTC brand. I'm on a shitty X8, it does the job but the fucker doesn't even have videochat. Hell, my last, now 10 year old, phone had videochat. What the hell, Sony-Erricson?
Mal
HTC seems to be one of the better makers of smartphones. Â And eh. I guess I can get to rooting it and such.
deanb
Yeah I really like my Wildfire. Sure it's low end(even lower now) but HTC sense is pretty nice, and the build quality too. I had Samsung feature phones before this and liked those so I'm still keeping an eye on Samsung Androids which I hear the galaxy range is nice (though a tad expensive) Â I will say when looking for an Android, and this will doubly apply to most folks here, make sure it has a GPU. That is the most crippling deficiency of the wildfire. It's got a 550mhz CPU, which is low as far as Androids go, but thats enough to run pretty much everything except games. 2D games tend to run fine, but the fancier stuff not so much. Faiblesse Des Sens
I think it's standard even for the low end. My Optimus V has a GPU

Thursday Next
I love my Desire HD. HTC definitely have great build quality. "My friend" has been through a few HTC's a couple of Samsungs and is on an Arc at the moment. He's not that impressed with the Sony. My dad's got an entry level Galaxy Fit that does everything he needs it to and more. Â I am sorely tempted to pick up a Galaxy Nexus. My contract still has aaaaaages to run though, so I'll probably be looking at getting Google's first Motorola Nexus, assuming that's what they have in mind after purchasing the company. deanb
I thought I was on a 18 month contract, turns out it's 24 months. So by the time it ends the Galaxy Nexus will probably be entry level
Faiblesse Des Sens
Just wait for ICS on other phones. No expandable storage, it's made by Samsung, it's always good to wait until the x.1 update, etc.
deanb
I wouldn't be too fussed for the Galaxy Nexus anyway. tbh I'm not liking the idea of removing hardware buttons with ICS. Hoping it's an optional thing, already a bit miffed that the Wildfire S (the newer version of my current phone) is missing the trackball. It's pretty nifty. Faiblesse Des Sens
Whats the useful of the trackball anyways, just to make scrolling easier? And yeah, buttons are optional on ICS. They're putting it on phones with buttons. Â Also, what about the possibiities on-screen buttons provide? Â http://www.droid-life.com/2011/11/22/galaxy-nexus-receives-ui-patch-adds-dedicated-search-option-to-lower-menu-bar/ Â This is pretty cool. deanb
But my phone has a dedicated search button already :/ It's even more unnerving it's something you need to mod back in. It's hardly like it's an unused button in an OS developed by a search company. Probably explains the in-app search buttons that have been popping up recently. Always felt it was a bit redundant, didn't realise ICS was getting rid of the dedicated button. Â The trackball allows for accuracy with text and is also used in a handful of games. It's part of the original hardware specifications so some apps still develop with the assumption the phone comes with one.
Faiblesse Des Sens
You're assuming that the prime/galaxy neus is Ice Cream Sandwich. It's not. There were already phones that didn't have the search button. It doesn't seem be widely used. Also, did you not notice that the ICS launcher has a built in search bar? Â A trackball doesn't sound useful enough to dedicate a spot on the phone. Probably why you never see them anymore.
deanb
You're assuming that the prime/galaxy neus is Ice Cream Sandwich. It's not. Yes it is. It's Googles stock example ICS phone. That's pretty much the whole point of the Nexus series. Â Also who isn't using the search button? Use it for apps, general google searches, music, within IMDB, amazon, maps, wordpress, docs etc etc. It'll be why it's something modded back in after just a few days is pretty much cos it is widely used. Â It's space that isn't dedicated to anything else. The wildfire n Wildefire S it's like spot the difference, once has the "trackball" and the other is just blank chin. It also doesn't much care if it's gloves either, which means you have a back-up input for when the screen becomes useless as winter sets in. TheFlyingGerbil
my android phone doesn't have a hardware search button (just home, menu, back) and I don't miss it. there's software search buttons all over the place.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Yes it is. It's Googles stock example ICS phone. That's pretty much the whole point of the Nexus series. Â Example is not the same as "have to do it this way." Just look at the Android lineup so far. Â Â Â Also who isn't using the search button? Use it for apps, general google searches, music, within IMDB, amazon, maps, wordpress, docs etc etc. It'll be why it's something modded back in after just a few days is pretty much cos it is widely used. Â None of the people I know with Android phones (which is a good handful of people) use it. I've been on a few XDA threads where the majority of people don't use it. Some people do end up using it, but there's just as many who don't. Which is why I was pointing out that on ICS, you can add it in if you want. Which is awesome. Â Also, it's the 21st century, get gloves with conductive threads. I don't care about your wildfire comparison. Compare it to other phones. The Nexus/Prime for example. Where would you even put a trackball on that? The same can be said for most modern phones. Mal
Well, a few days ago the tablet got banned and now the Nexus got banned in the US. For now or forever. Got to see how it ultimately goes. http://www.engadget....g-galaxy-nexus/ Since its Apple versus Samsung, perhaps the S3 will get banned as well. Â I'm currently looking for a new phone to replace my current Samsung Epic in five months... getting shit like this does not help.
