deanb
Android two years ago was a bit of a more techy choice up against the iPhone, but these days it's a bit of a no brainer , ICS really just made it all click into place, you've got all the Google services thrown in (I don't have it yet but I hear Google Now is amazing), the hardware with stuff like NFC, expandable memory, micro-USB, ton of form factors etc. I've got my Note, it's a bit niche, but there's nothing like it on iPhones line up. Want something small n cheap there's the Ace, Desire C, want something super high end you've got the S3 (the S4 to come soon), the One X, etc. Also the emulators are one of the big exclusive gaming apps in my opinion. All I will say though is find someone you know IRL with one, see if you can have a bit of a play about with it and just keep in mind it's not iOS. TheFlyingGerbil
If you have an ipod for your gaming/app fix maybe you could think about a windows phone. People seem to really like the Nokia Lumia 620 and it is really great value. Windows Phone OS is so smooth and fast you should at least have a look at it but if you want to be using the apps other people are talking about you should steer clear. deanb
Yeah my dad got one, the Lumia 800 iirc. He enjoys it, he has generally always been a Nokia guy. It makes calls, it does facebook, it does him fine.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Why would you get a Windows Phone that doesn't have Windows Phone 8? 920 or HTC8x or bust.
Waldorf and Statler
I REALLY want to upgrade this coming month into a Galaxy Note II. Shame the phone costs like 200 bucks on AT&T while freaking Sprint can get it for like 70 bucks. Fucking Sprint. I don't even know if I have the spending cash to throw down 200 on a phone. Not until I get an internship for the summer at least. Right now realistically my options are Galaxy SIII and LG Optimus G. Any thoughts on those two? Galaxy SIII-fanboyism aside I would like to know if anybody has seen first hand an Optimus G. They're both the same price and the Optimus G outperforms the Galaxy SIII in some aspects even. edit: I think a major player will be software updates. I know LG is very horrible with updates (4.1 hasn't even entirely hit the Optimus G in the west if at all). How good is Samsung with updates? Is the S3 expected to get 4.2? Faiblesse Des Sens
Shame the phone costs like 200 bucks on AT&T while freaking Sprint can get it for like 70 bucks. Fucking Sprint. That difference means nothing when you're on a 2-year contract. You will be paying out of your ass for the phone regardless. Optimus G is the Nexus 4 with LG changes to it. There's already work being done to get it to basically be a Nexus 4.
Waldorf and Statler
Isn't it the other way around? I mean the Optimus G's main strength is the faster data capabilities while the Nexus 4 has the updates strength. But you have to remember I'm currently in a family plan so all I'm paying for is the phone itself. Once I graduate and start paying for my own service is when I'll see the reality. Don't tell me Santa isn't real yet.
TheFlyingGerbil
620 is a windows 8 phone, and it is a lot smoother experience than you would get on an android phone at that price. I got my 800 when it first came out, and I assume Dean's Dad's phone is not a new purchase. I of course would not recommend getting a windows phone 7 now. Are there any believable rumours about when the next nexus phone will come out?

I'm pretty certain the Nexus 4 was announced before the Optimus G, then LG surprised absolutely no one when they released the G which is basically all of the 4s part with buttons + LTE + LGs Android tweaks. Anyways, if you're just paying for the phone, I would just save up money, sell plasma/whore yourself, do what you gotta do. Buying an underpowered/not the phone you want is a poor choice when you're stuck with it for so long. It looks like your big choice will be between size and if you care about TouchWiz or not. IIRC, LG has one of the less annoying Android OSs.
Mister Jack
Got my phone. Galaxy SIII. Now I just need some apps.
Waldorf and Statler
Well I caved in and bought the Galaxy S4. I believe this is the first time I went with what is popular in the technology department. So many people are saying their car's head units don't recognize their phones as a mass-storage device so they can't play music out of their phones, but mine does. and it's awesome. I can finally listen to digital music. And worst comes to worst I can charge it via USB and play it via Aux.
Mister Jack
I only have the S3 but it's the most amazing phone I could have ever asked for.
Waldorf and Statler
The S4 has some gimmicky cool features like scrolling via moving your head or tilting the phone. Which is great if you're lazy like me but it seems to right now only work with certain things, like say the S4's browser vs Chrome.
Mister Jack
It sounds like that would pick up a lot of false positives.
Waldorf and Statler
As of right now? Not really. The phone needs to recognize that you are looking at the screen and once it does is when you are given the option. Though you can always turn it off, my friends did. Mister Jack
I'm thinking about getting a memory card for my galaxy s3 but I hear that sandisk cards tend to mysteriously die in that phone for some reason. Has anyone here experienced something like this? If so, what's a good alternative?
Waldorf and Statler
I recently purchased a 32gb miniSD card. Sandisk. But it had the best ratings in Amazon and it seems to be specifically intended for android devices [even has the android mascot in the packaging]. I'll let you know. But everywhere else that I've purchased Sandisk it works just fine. I need my music and with my Zune HD lost [and possibly not found until tomorrow at the earliest] my phone is my best option. Just out of curiosity what's with all the complaints of the S4 only currently having like 10 gbs of data available instead of 16? I mean as someone who is getting an external SD and doesn't download a gajillion apps I fail to see the problem
Faiblesse Des Sens
It has less than half the space available IIRC. Games themselves can be over a gig each and you can't install them onto the SD card. The same goes for syncing Google Music. It also highlights very well how bloated Samsung devices are.
Waldorf and Statler
True. Maybe I'm just not part of the problem as sure it bothers me but I don't ever own that many apps.
Faiblesse Des Sens
What about the people who use Google Music for syncing? That space can add up quickly as well especially when a game or two is involved.
Waldorf and Statler
I'm not savvy with google music as I've never used it but isn't that mainly streaming? And if you decide to save a song locally they really don't give you the option of the external SD? Then's what the whole point of a phone having an upgraded memory if it won't even let you store music in it? I mean I know it lets you do regular music you save on it externally but jeesh
Faiblesse Des Sens
Yep, no external SD option when saving locally. Nexus phones don't have MicroSD slots.
Waldorf and Statler
Well that's just fucking dumb. I can't imagine the coding would take much seeing how the regular music app in my samsung can use the external microSD.
Faiblesse Des Sens
The Google Music app works with music on the external card. The issue is that Google doesn't want to promote this practice as they've done away with microSD slots.
TheFlyingGerbil
What's the issue google (and others) have with putting microSD card slots in their devices? Surely the more space people have the more likely they are to buy stuff to fill it.
