Eleven
Can you make calls or SMS, like a normal phone, on a 3G/4G Nexus 7? Officially or if it requires some kind of (fairly easy) hack? I imagine this shouldn't be much of an issue with Android. It's already running stock android, I wonder if the "phone" app or equivalent would also be there, just hidden away. It's going to be a secondary phone thing so I don't care much about how awkward it could be making calls or answering texts on that thing. danielpholt
You should be able to send SMS's USING the Nexus 7, but it won't send them directly. I've been using an app called Mighty Text that allows me to send texts from my browser/tablet provided they're on the same WiFi network as my phone. It works for the most part. deanb
My understanding of MightyText is it's pretty much just controlling your phone to send texts, much in the same way I can respond to texts through my phone while on my PC via AirDroid. My PC only gains the ability to "send texts" because it's controlling my PC. The apps are pretty much there or they're not, but given it's a Nexus device there's likely nothing stopping you installing a custom ROM that might include it. Though whether a 3G device can do regular phone calls seems up in the air. Doing some googling it seems it's pretty much a case of using the 3G connection to do Google Voice/VOIP calls. If it's a secondary phone in a sense of having your main phone just left charging in your room while going around the house with your nexus then you'll be sort of okay with Master-Slave connection like with MightText, but other than that I wouldn't buy a Nexus 7 if the main hope is that a phone hack will happen. Eleven
Ah I see. Thanks for the response. I was thinking of getting an Android device and since the Nexus 7 looks good and has a nice price, I was hoping i could also use it as a phone. I guess I'll try to look into it more, I also just saw instructions on how to use it as an internet phone. Mighty Text sounds like it needs my main phone to be an Android. So right now it's probably not an option. Though I've been wanting something like that for iOS. Glad that it's actually a thing, even if it's Android only. I know iOS has iMessage but that won't send ordinary SMS. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Faiblesse Des Sens
You need cell-phone service to send texts. You'll have to use Hangouts or any other sort of IM service on a Nexus 7. Mighty Text/Airdroid requires an Android phone with service as it sends the texts through your phone even though you're on your computer. Eleven
Well, I will have cellphone service on that sim card. It was my old number that I keep from getting deactivated. It does look like it would be possible with a simple app download: http://nexus7.wonderhowto.com/how-to/send-receive-text-messages-right-from-your-nexus-7-3g-tablet-rooted-non-rooted-0145250/ Mostly for texts anyway, as I don't want to answer calls on the thing so this could be perfect! As far as I know the 2013 Nexus 7 only has data bands and not any of the cell bands. I would look into that as a starting point. That's assuming you're buying the LTE model to begin with. Also in that guide the screenshot still has the message "sending." You need to do more than just install the app...

Eleven
Since I can't still get a Nexus 7, I started to look around for other Android devices and saw the Xperia Z Ultra. Now, I'm not a big fan of humongous phones, but this device looks so awesome. I think I'm gonna get that, maybe, it looks like it would solve my tablet as a phone issue (which I gave up on anyway). Anyway, the only problem I see is that since this is technically a phone, the apps might run in phone mode, and with 6.4" screen i think tablet mode should be ideal. Found a tweak though, I just hope it works great. http://highonandroid.com/android-apps/how-to-run-apps-in-phone-or-tablet-mode-on-any-rooted-android-smartphonetablet/ Edit: the only issue other than price (it's damn expensive!) TheFlyingGerbil
the galaxy mega is similar to the xperia z ultra, but cheaper with correspondingly lower specs;

If any of the phablets (HTC One Ultra/Mega/Huge whatever they're calling it, Note 2, Xperia Z Ultra, etc) support the Paranoid Android ROM then you will have much more control over what "mode" you run the app in. It allows for deeper settings to be changed for tablet and phone modes than anything else.
Mal
I should root my Note 2 and shit but I'm afraid of bricking it. Yes I know, follow the damn directions but still... it works so why fix it...? Bad excuse, I know.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I'd root it just to remove the bloatware but keep all of the apps you won't be able to use on a non-Touchwiz based ROM. Though that is a fairly popular phone so I'm sure there are ROMs that are like that already. On my EVO 3D I tried out a few "Sense-less" ROMs where they removed every bit of HTC Sense that they could but it was still based on the Sense ROM rather than AOSP or CyanogenMod. deanb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylP4DDwXZb8 Hey, it's my new phone to be. S-Note looks to be a lot better than it is in the first gen Note. Was always kinda bummed they got rid of S Memo with Jellybean, S Note was too clunky. But with that kind of grunt behind it should be a lot smoother. No idea why they seem to be creating this artificial relationship with "Gear" though: http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxynote3+gear/

deanb
I assume we're responding to the second bit about it being promoted alongside Gear: Gear is a secondary product, quite it's own thing, in it's own market, and not tied to the Note in anyway except for the Note 3 microsite for some reason. And if people had issue with the size of the Note, it wouldn't be up to Note III.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Well my line of thinking is that it's for people who think "I don't want to pull out a giant phone for something simple." HTC has released/is releasing a device that's almost like a mini-phone as an accessory to one of their big phones. Same sort of concept. I'm just talking about purely about advertising both of them together though. Product synergy and whatnot. Some exec probably got off on that. Mal
I'm game for a Note 3, just don't break the screen. The Gear seems kind of neat. I personally can see myself using it since I do wear a watch. So it is a simple switch to wearing the Gear while out and about. If it has good product synergy with the Note 3, then yeah, I can get it. It would be cool to just see text messages or email titles on a watch. If it somehow works with the Note 2 as well, then the better. Please be $100 or at least don't break the wallet. Dean, how do you use your Note? I feel like I'm wasting my Note 2's potential (though its amazing for videos though). Maybe I haven't realized the sidebar potential... when I first saw it I thought it was in the way.
