The shortlist for the main games isn't up yet, but the shortlist for the public vote is:

http://www.bafta.org...10,1646,BA.html

Galaxy 2, Red Dead, Hot Pursuit, Mass Effect 2, Blops, Heavy Rain, Reach, FIFA 11, Dance Central n Limbo.

At least we got in one game. Shame it was a kinect title.

Anyway it's a public vote so you can go here:

http://www.baftagame...ards/index.html

Vote on your fave game and be in for a chance to win 360, Kinect and a bunch of games.(I know, you'd of needed to have those already to vote)

A glance at Twitter suggests that RDR and ME2 are the main chance for winning.

However MW2 won last years, so don't hold your hopes up.

Here's last years winners:

http://www.bafta.org...10,1017,BA.html

I'll post the results and any videos up when it's done and run a post on PXOD.

about 9:30 for Miyamato getting the BAFTA fellowship. Which means I beat you all at my challenge of getting a shot of Miyamato sad (google him, he's always smiling) 18:00 for his acceptance speech. There's a fair bit of fluff on how awesome he is inbetween that.

I voted! Super Mario Galaxy 2 FTW! really happy to see Limbo up there too though its great to see xbla games up there!

Watching that clip.....oh Ant and Dec presenting the award to Miyamoto. I never thought I'd see them together! Their speech isn't too bad before they present him. Not too many jokes thank god! Miyamoto deserved it woo!

My comment on the list from Steam chat:

14:51 - Cyber Rat [k]: ...the Artistic Achievement section...

14:51 - Cyber Rat [k]: Best game is kinda ok

14:51 - Cyber Rat [k]: Family looks like it's sponsored

14:52 - Cyber Rat [k]: Gameplay is ok I guess. Can't comment on AC: B or Limbo though. God of War and ME2 seems to imply they're considering flow rather than innovation

14:52 - Cyber Rat [k]: Handheld seems ok

14:53 - Cyber Rat [k]: MP seems ok as well

14:53 - Cyber Rat [k]: Can't comment on Music much, since I've only heard the OST for 2 of those games

14:53 - Cyber Rat [k]: But Nier should have been there :(

14:54 - Cyber Rat [k]: Story is awful

14:54 - Cyber Rat [k]: So very awful

14:54 - Cyber Rat [k]: ...why is Fallout in Strategy?

14:54 - Cyber Rat [k]: Technical Innovation is also godawful

14:55 - Cyber Rat [k]: Use of Audio is like a "Here are the same nominations again"

14:55 - Cyber Rat [k]: Best of 2010 looks like most 2010 lists on the Internet

14:55 - Cyber Rat [k]: Well, for the most part

14:55 - Cyber Rat [k]: /end of rant

VG BAFTAs, the most pointless thing ever (in all honesty). And I'm saying this knowing a lot of people in the non-VG segment of the BAFTAs and working my way into FT membership, (. Honestly discussing games with most of the film members of the BAFTAs feels like slamming your head against a brick wall sometimes. At least it's different from how it used to be in 2007. But it needs to go on, so that gaming can get serious here. The UK gaming industry can use all the support it can get.

It's a shame the NPA got shut down last year (it's main activities anyway).

I'm surprised Halo Reach wasn't at least nominated for best original music, especially considering that both Fable III and Mass Effect 2 are on there. Music never seemed like an especially strong point of either of those games to me.

This caught my eye (the winner of "ones to watch")

Personally I was surprised at the many nominations of Limbo, as well as the lack of a downloadable games category. As was mentioned in steam chat (apart from "hey this is much better than VGA's") it seemed like it was the indie game poster child of the event.

Also they need a new narrator, he sounded bored out of his skull, completely disinterested in what was going off. As another suggested it sounded as if he was just reading off Wikipedia.
Winner of the GAME award was no surprise since it's public vote n MW2 won last year.

The award for Story going to Heavy Rain pretty much sums up why the BAFTAs for games aren't serious. I mean you can tell what sort of entertainment stories they want from games which is the sad part. Not that most of the nominations deserved it either. I know stories are a matter of taste but there are far better stories out there in games, mostly lesser played ones.

What's your problem with the story? There were a few unanswered questions, but generally, it was well played and the reveal near the end was brilliantly executed. I know people have issues with the casting, but the story is good, imho.

Perhaps it is, as you say, a matter of opinion.

Technically when the BAFTAs award something for its story it usually awards it based on screenplay. Screenplay and execution are two entirely different things. So a good screenplay might have terrible execution and vice versa. Heavy Rain does have a lot of plotholes which isn't really the fault of execution but rather with the writing. It's a very basic crime novel, something normally the BAFTAs would ignore. On the other hand there have been some really good screenplays written for games and for films that could be given the award. The reason why the story works to some extent is due to the execution, but were you to read the story in its screenplay form would you give it the award?

That's the question. I've rarely seen awards given for the execution of the screenplay as opposed to the actual screenplay. Story awards here are synonymous with screenplay. I think you're confusing execution with writing.

edit: The award for execution of the screenplay is the award for direction.

Just a minor note on this, but the committee who vote on the VG BAFTAs and the guys who vote on the normal BAFTAs aren't the same.

http://www.bafta.org/awards/video-games/video-games-eligibility-judging,541,BA.html

Most of them are part of the VG industry, so I have a feeling the same system and standards that apply for the regular BAFTAs don't cross over much.

STORY

For achievement in conveying compelling and original story content in an innovative and contextual manner.

As far as I'm aware, since I know people on the Film side of the board (not the games side), the rules are similar across the board. Though I guess the jury probably has a different, less strict judging criteria. I'm aware that there doesn't exist a formal screenplay for certain games. Technically I guess it makes sense that the VG industry are judging them, though it does put gaming on a lower priority for them which pretty much just reconfirms what I'd said at the start on this thread.

It sort of does undermine the award to an extent. Just the story one because it's practically different to existing judging criteria for stories, shouldn't it be judged based on written merit rather than final visual execution? Then again I suppose you can't judge say Heavy Rain on the same level as something like Zodiac (which despite being a good screenplay and all, did cause me to fall asleep). While I do dislike the WGA at times (despite being a member), I think their judging standards for story are probably more accurate.

Based on Dean's edit. I think Heavy Rain was a good choice.

For NFS: HP, I enjoyed the multiplayer when I was in a race/pursuit/whatever. But actually getting there was (imho) poorly executed. Given that Hot Pursuit is a team mode, not being able to pick your team is pretty awful.

I'm one of the few on PS3 who has and uses a mic for tactics as opposed to using it to introduce you all to my latest fave hip-hop track, being unable to team up with a few friends save by happenstance or planetary alignment was quite annoying.

Nominees for this year. Once again Strategy proving to be an elusive genre. (And once again I'll point out the devs put themselves in these categories). I assume "Development Team" is placeholder text. It's kinda neat they're listing lead devs and not just studios.

I actually think it's a bit of a dick move calling out a few individuals rather than the whole studio. Casey is a nice enough guy, but he's also one of the more highly compensated members of the studio. Gets his name at the top of the game credits. Gets to go to swanky events like the Baftas. For him to be basically the guy who wins the award is a bit of cheek.
