Mister Jack
What program would you guys recommend to burn a video DVD that will play on my consoles and DVD players? I only have a few requirements. 1) It has to be free. I don't plan on doing a lot of burning. 2) It has to be easy to use. I'm not exactly familiar with this process. 3) It would be nice if it let you use custom menus or at least backgrounds for the menus. If this isn't possible I suppose I could live without it. I do want to be able to set up chapters for episodes, though.
deanb
What OS you on? Windows 7 has one built in that's pretty good. Also what's your DVD player like? Most (and the consoles) can play DivX video.
Mister Jack
I'm on Windows 7 64-bit. Built in you say? *Edit* Well I found Windows DVD maker. Does it have any menu options? Edited February 13, 2011 by Mister Jack
Battra92
FAVC is my favorite tool in Windows. It's not perfect and I'm not 100% sure on Windows 7 but it works well for me. Basically it's a frontend for a lot of free tools. There's not a lot of control there but for 99% of what you probably want to do, it's fine. Here's the link: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FAVC That site can give you a lot more advice than I can. FWIW, on Linux I use DeVeDe. You can play about a bit. Doesn't let you use back ground images though afaik. I've just used the default. You can change the font used though. Just play about. As for chapters for each episode, not sure I've only ever used movies with it.
Mister Jack
Apparently Battra's suggestion doesn't work on 64 bit Windows 7. Too bad.
Battra92
Did you try the link down below it that said: More information and other downloads: Download FAVC 64 bit version here Requires Microsoft's .NET framework v2 and at least v2.57 of Avisynth. Some people in the comments there seem to be using Win7 64. Feel free to PM me for help.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I used Nero back in the day for this sort of thing. It lets you build menus and whatnot easily. I have no idea if there's a better option for win 7.
Mister Jack
Aw, FAVAC only lets you put 10 episodes on a disc before it discards the option of having a menu?
Battra92
Aw, FAVAC only lets you put 10 episodes on a disc before it discards the option of having a menu? How long are the episodes? I find that anything longer than 2.5 to MAYbe hours looks like poop on a DVD-5.
Mister Jack
Well the how-to guide just said that anything more than 10 files and it took out the menu.
Battra92
No, I realize that. I'm just pointing out that you really don't want to put more than 10 episodes per disc unless they are like 10 minute episodes and even then you're almost at the two hour point. Plus based on the way FAVC does menus you'd run out of room. My advice is to have a couple of RWs on hand no matter what tool you end up using. There's a lot of trial and error involved in getting just what you want. Now I have a system and don't even have to think about it.
