TheMightyEthan
"Gen 4"? Apparently there were no games before PS1?
deanb
I've seen their not-quite-right gen numbers used before now. Would someone be able to provide clarification on their use of Gen 3 and Gen 4. Because I'm not quite sure it's used in the same way we'd say "8th gen" (for one it'd be 4th gen surely?). And it's not a relation to when they came into games market either cos they're over 30 years old. I've a feeling it's media, Gen 3 being disc based console focused, and now Gen 4 is digital based with a mobile(ish) focus?
MetalCaveman
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/06/13/mirrors-edge-will-not-be-turned-into-a-shooter-will-be-open-world/ It's not going to be a shooter but it's still going to be a different experience from the first one. "The first game was a lot about running away from things," Söderlund said.
toxicitizen
You know, I don't subscribe to the notion that open-worlds are inherently better. There have been many games I found tedious because they had open-worlds. But a while back someone (can't recall if it was here) said an hypothetical Mirror's Edge 2 should be open-world and my first instinct was to disagree. But then I thought about it a bit and realized that an open-world Mirror's Edge could actually be fucking amazing. So, for once, I'm actually glad to hear those words. Waldorf and Statler
If they have an algorithm that is smart enough as a GPS to recalculate the guiding red line for you that'd be great. NeoStarr
The open world still strikes me as a bit weird still since it's essentially a racing game. It was a lot more fun beating times in the little challenges then it was playing the story. In open world racing games that I've played (admittedly not many), the world served little purpose other then to get to your next track. I feel like they'd need to change the gameplay an awful lot to make the open world worthwhile. Definitely looking forward to it though.
Waldorf and Statler
racing game? For me it was a "oh shit I'm powerless from killing anything run the fuck away" game.

SomTervo
A bit more gameplay and such. This... I asked for this... I even wrote an article about it in 2013 about how Mirror's Edge is one of the few IPs that would truly benefit from going open world. I am so excite. Now we just need people's thoughts from the show floor.
TheMightyEthan
Was there actually more in that than they showed during the press conference?
SomTervo
I don't think so, but it's playable on the show floor. One story mission in a chunk of the open world, plus three side missions in a chunk of the open world.
TheMightyEthan
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst will have no gunplay. Fuck yeah! "In Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, you won't be using any guns at all," Senior Producer Sara Jansson told Polygon. "We've completely removed that aspect of the game. You can't even pick them up." Of course, Faith will still have to get heavy now and then, but the fighting in Catalyst "is more of an extension of the movement," Jansson said. "It builds on the flow. It fits a lot better with the game mechanics. When Faith is in flow, when she stitches together move after move without failing and keeps her momentum going, she's actually invulnerable to bullets. That can keep her out of harm's way. It's only when she stops that she can get hurt." Sounds badass.
SomTervo
Yes! And the people from the show floor - even non-combat Mirror's Edge 1 purists - said that the flowed-in combat worked really well. If you lose your momentum you won't be able to stop anyone and you'll die quite quickly.

toxicitizen
Oh fuck me, this looks amazing. This might actually be the first game I buy at launch/full price on Origin...
SomTervo
Yeah, it looks so good. I watched it with sound off, and I really dislike how the trailer is edited. But aside from that, sign me up (not that I wasn't in from day one). If you want a hit of great open world free running and chases, hit up Dying Light and run about at night time. So intense, fast and fun (with a dose of terrifying). Edited August 5, 2015 by kenshi_ryden
Faiblesse Des Sens
I was very disappointed in the trailer but I'm really hoping that this was just a fairly linear section they showed that is this linear because it's a major part of the story. Mal
I'm actually afraid it will be too open ended with pointless side-quests and collectables littering the game world. Too much of both really kills a game for me. It killed Shadow of Mordor, Borderlands 2 and Final Fantasy XII (just listing notable games from memory) for me. It can easily kill this game as well. Thursday Next
If you watch the video closely, you can see all the branching paths that lead to places other than Elysium. Heading to a building is going to have an optimum route, and once you are in a building corridors are inevitable so a degree of linearity is to be expected in the trailer. I wouldn't take a five minute run to a cutscene as an indication of how open/closed the game will be.
SomTervo
Yeah, isn't this the video where the player spends a solid minute turning on the spot looking at the surrounding environment? Because that entire environment is explorable and open world. The show floor demo allows people to run about in it. Things only get linear once they're inside the mission building – which is perfectly reasonable, imo. TheMightyEthan
Wow, that sounds like shit on my laptop. Is it because of my shitty laptop speakers or is the file quality just that low?
deanb
http://www.mirrorsedge.com/news/update-on-mirrors-edge-catalyst Mirror's Edge is moved back a few months. I've a feeling it might be due the fact there's like 3 games out on the same day iirc.
TheMightyEthan
Nah, if it were just the other releases then they would have only moved it a few weeks, not 3 months. I'm sad that it's later, but I'm happy that now I only have to decide between Far Cry: Primal and Deus Ex, and not those games plus Mirror's Edge (Mirror's Edge would have won).
