deanb
There's a decent amount of Euros about now I guess this is worth making. Link some of your playlists and such. Also you guys know you can make collaborative playlists which might be worth doing. I'll link the old one This is the TAY playlist. The official one Talk Amonst Yourselves It's basically as many of the tracks I could get from the "What are you listening to now thread" I'm only upto page 14. I skipped christmas songs, and since I'm making it the screamo/thrash/really heavy metal stuff. At least the ones I listened to. Some I added in without listening to first. Also if it lacks the original version I'll tend to go for a cover (a half decent cover) and classic tracks it's a best approximation, since there's generally tons of folks covering them. Kotakuites This is the old collab play list. You guys should be able to add or remove whatever you want. Main This is my main playlist, I use a decent amount of my own songs, but I think Spotfiy can fill in if you don't have it. Top 100 tracks currently on Spotify This is a general and automated list, if you're looking for something random. Also it seems the forum auto-formats Spotify links, which is cool. TheFlyingGerbil
I use spotify, but don't bother with playlists as I only really use it to listen to individual songs. E.g. if I hear something on a TV advert. Or if I like a few songs by an artist I'll see if the album is worth buying (on CD!). If I want to remember an artist for the future I'll star the song of theirs I like. I will have a listen to those playlists though to see what kotakuites tastes are like - I hope there isn't to much metal though The old kotakuites playlist is just the vampire weekend album :/ I guess that's the problem with collaborative stuff. People can ruin all your hard work. Maybe it can have a rule where you can take one song off and add one on? Joe
TheFlyingGerbil
Spotify is changing its free service by cutting the number of hours you can listen per month in half from 20 to 10. It is also reducing the number of times you can listen to a track from unlimited to 5 times per month. Link They're really hoping to push you onto the premium service! My worry is they will start tiering their paid services once they completely cripple the free version.
Mr W Phallus
The 5x per track thing is gonna suck, I couldn't really say about the over-all hours because I have no idea how much time I spend using Spotify a month. I've certainly never hit the 20 hours limit. Still I suppose in hindsight it's surprising it lasted as long as it did, free and legal just don't go together well. deanb
A good thing I started weaning off Spotify a couple months back. Also I hear it's the labels pressuring them. Though I'm kinda doubtful. I guess it'll be good for random plays now n then but yeah there goes what was a positive force in the world. Fun fact of the day: Google's CEO's have enough personal cash each to purchase the entire music industry.
TheFlyingGerbil
When you weaned yourself off Spotify, what did you replace it with? I am always disappointed by last.fm each time I try it.
deanb
I finally organized a fair chunk of my library, so now I'm on WinAmp.
TheFlyingGerbil
oh, so no streaming service. never mind - I tend to just use youtube now to find music but I'd rather use a proper music site.
Mr W Phallus
Do you use Soundcloud at all Gerbil? I tend to use a mixture of Youtube, Soundcloud and Spotify and my own library of stolen music.
TheFlyingGerbil
I don't 100% understand soundcloud.
Mr W Phallus
I guess it's sort of Youtube for music. It could really do with some sort of recommendation or 'more songs like this' feature but it seems quite good, especially for finding new music. Was there something in particular that you having trouble with? Although I've only really started using it recently so I probably don't know much more than you. TheFlyingGerbil
yeah, it's more the 'you may also like' as you say, it's not there. I don't like just clicking randomly on stuff and hoping I will like it.

deanb
Games Feel free to add to it. It's a bit hodge podge since it ranges from Dragon Age to Crysis and back to Fallout. Also What Are You Listening Too in Spotify form: WRUL2 It goes to about page 20 or so I think. There's 13 hours of music there so don't listen to it all at once if you're on a free one I've also enabled it as collaborative if people want to continue building it up. Luftwaffles
Apparently Spotify is coming to the US sometime soon. They've said it in the past, but this time they actually put a banner up on the site and opened it to emails. Fingers crossed either way. Thursday Next
I've started using mflow. It's a sort of mash up of twitter and spotify. You can join up here: http://beta.mflow.com/signup?invitecode=ONJ36F
SanaEquiesterer
If I understand Spotify correctly, it's a program that allows you to listen to streaming music on various platforms from a huge database and share/discover/buy music? If I'm happy finding and tracking my music with Last.fm then there isn't much point in getting it, is there? How is their database of independent artists? Edited July 12, 2011 by SanaEquiesterer
Luftwaffles
I always thought it was a last.fm meets grooveshark type of thing. Either way, Spotify does scrobble to last.fm, so that automatically makes me more interested in it.
Faiblesse Des Sens
How is their database of independent artists? Considering all of their news coverage up until beta was getting the major labels involved... probably not very good. That's one thing Last.FM excels at and I love it for. Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
If you want good coverage of indie bands, go with Rdio. In the end, they're practically the same services, only Rdio is pretty indie-friendly. My sister's boyfriend's sister, who is currently working on a contract with Universal, has all her early, independent stuff up on there. Johnny
I would urge everyone to stay away from Spotify unless all of the following is true for you: 1) I only listen to mainstream bands* 2) I don't care about audio quality** 3) I am happy to pay out my ass for this service*** 4) I do not care about actually supporting the artists**** *A vast amount of artists do not exist at all on spotify or only have a small piece of their work available on the service. The following is a small list of some artists or bands I personally enjoy that have a large amount of their music missing or are completely absent from Spotify: Aphex Twin - Only has a fraction of his work availble. Machinae Supremacy - First two albums nowhere to be found C418 - Only the Minecraft album is available Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - 1 of 2 albums missing Deadmau5 - Only his two latest albums and a few singles are available Nujabes - Completely missing Pendulum - Hold Your Color is missing Tool - Completely missing Tsutchie - Completely missing I could go on. ** The audio quality on spotify is inconsistent as fuck, especially for non-paying users. *** Spotify's free service is completely crippled. Aside from the constant audio ads, you can only listen to a track up to 5 times per month, and a total of 20 hours of music per month (10 hours per month if you've been a member for more than 6 months). **** The revenue artists get from spotify is almost nothing. It has been said - by actual musicians - that Spotify gets artists significantly less revenue to artists compared to ANY comparable service. Quite frankly I'm disgusted by this. I was disgusted at how many people happily jumped aboard when it launched in sweden, disgusted when it rolled out into the rest of europe, and still disgusted now that it's launching in the US. If you really need a streaming alternative, I would suggest Grooveshark. If you want to support the artists in a real way, go to their shows and buy their albums. If you just want to look up an album before downloading or purchasing, you can use youtube or grooveshark. Just don't give these guys more money for providing you music they didn't create. I don't see how this - apart from legally of course - is much different from paying for piracy.
